In his broadest remarks on gun control yet in the aftermath of the mass shooting at a Colorado movie theater, President Barack Obama called late Wednesday for tougher background checks designed to keep guns out of the hands of criminals and the mentally ill.
"A lot of gun owners would agree that AK-47s belong in the hands of soldiers, not in the hands of criminals -- that they belong on the battlefield of war, not on the streets of our cities," the president, who has called for reimposing the Assault Weapons Ban, said in a speech to the National Urban League.
"I believe the majority of gun owners would agree that we should do everything possible to prevent criminals and fugitives from purchasing weapons; that we should check someone's criminal record before they can check out a gun seller; that a mentally unbalanced individual should not be able to get his hands on a gun so easily," he said. "These steps shouldn't be controversial. They should be common sense."

He was squeaky clean, and purchased everything over a period of months.
No amount of background checks would have prevented James Holmes, a man studying for his PHD in neurobiology. When he was still at Westview High School in San Diego, Holmes won an internship in neurobiology at the Salk Institute. All these tighter background checks are going to do is make it harder for good, law abiding citizens from owning guns.
This distraction of more gun control is getting sickening and takes us from the real question: Why did James Holmes do it? Is there a political reason like the Ted Kaczynski manifesto that drove Holmes to go into Joker mode? Is Holmes a OWS anarchist wanting to trigger a civil war? I want answers to the central question of motive and not distractions about guns, Hollywood violence, video games and Twinkies.

That was my question as well. It leads directly to what zer0bama really means: to make purchasing any firearm so difficult for any squeaky clean citizen as to effectively remove that right.
What does Obama have to point to in the background check system we have now that is flawed?
The Left/antigun forces are using the Brady Bill background check system to expand their power to limit firearms and the people who can possess them. When Obama talks about "improving background checks" he isn't talking about making things more efficient - he's talking about looking for more reasons to deny permission for our own rights.

I'm guessing that Barry's handlers want a larger version of what the VA did a few years ago, when the names of servicemen who *voluntarily* sought mental health treatment were dumped into the NICS background check computers.
Odds are, it's already hidden in the Obamacare text.
He WAS briefed. He was told by John Brennan, IIRC, at approx 5:30 a.m. Friday, AND, when he flew back to DC, he cancelled all campaign activities and had a pow-wow with his henchman. He is just a narcissistic idiot who doesn’t pay attention unless it involves him, I assume.

The picture posted of the AR15 lying on the ground did not show a 100 round magazine. Maybe a 30 round at most.
The Second Amendment is not to protect deer and duck hunters.
