“Holmes is somebody’s torpedo or cat’s paw or hit man or fall guy. “

I agree,,,, I think there were others involved. He rigged his stereo with a timer to start blasting music at the same time he made his assault. Figured someone would open the unlocked door, and trip off all the explosives, destroying all evidence. Thank God that didn’t happen!

On my mobile right now. I think I need to see this on my desktop widescreen to get the full effect, to give it the respect it deserves.

I had a VW just like that one, the Wolfsburg emblem on the hood. It had `Fahrt’ engraved on the ignition switch and gave me a giggle every time I turned the key.

6,000 rounds sounds like a lot more than it really is.

You can fit 1000 rounds of .223 on stripper clips in a .50cal ammo can. Pistol ammo should pack at least to that density, shotgun shells, not so much...

GtG

That was my attempt at being sarcastic. Anytime a weapon is used to commit a crime, the media will always try to give people the impression that only the military has a legitimate use for high-capacity, high-powered, type weapons, especially if it’s a AR or AK type variant.

I know. What really frosts me is the so-called media puke “experts” — by their own admission — bloviating about a subject with which they know nothing. If these “journalists” reported sports (or the obits) as well as they report on crime and guns, their editors would have them reassigned to counting palm trees in Thule, Greenland.

He may have acted alone, or he may have been a patsy.

I still want to here how he got into the theater. The local multiplex has alarms on the emergency exits, and the lights go one if they get opened. That and it sounds like someone let him in.

The GAU-8 shoots it's wad in 14 seconds, while the VW is like the energizer bunny.

However, I'd rather be chased by the VW than the GAU-8.

6,000 rounds is a "mind boggling stash of ammo" ???

Here's the thing.

For YOU, or ME, or Pa Kettle, 6000 rounds is not a big deal.

This guy was a GEEK. Played COMPUTER GAMES. All of a sudden he buys 4 weapons, 6000 rounds of various ammo, and enough chemicals to make a variety of BOMBS.

Although it was LEGAL for him to purchase, does it not seem a bit odd, in light of his normal life/practices ?

I actually think he wanted excessive amounts of ammo, because that was the content of pictures impressed into his brain by watching Batman movies, reading Batman comic books, and fantasizing about being the anti-hero.

And I think I know who he zeroed in on to imitate.

This is James Holmes just prior to the murders.

Then... why would he tell the cops about the booby-traps ?

Did he not want to kill any LEO's ? Is that why he just walked out to the parking lot, and surrendered ?

The explosives were planned to go off before his attack. It was meant as a distraction. He thought that most of the cops would be called to the scene of the huge explosion he had planned and this would leave the police unable to get to the theater when he started shooting.

Fortunately, the next door neighbor did not open the door all the way, so the explosives never went off, and the police were therefore at the theater when he started shooting. In addition his gun jammed so he didn’t get to do all the damage he had hoped to do.

He surrendered because there was nothing else he could do. He obviously wasn’t suicidal, but just wanted to kill others. And he was probably taunting the police when he told them about rigging the apartment. He would have known perfectly well that the police don’t just rush into an apartment from which a mass murderer has come without first checking for booby traps, so he probably didn’t have much hope that he was going to be able to kill any of them.

In any case, the whole point of his attack was precisely to kill the vulnerable and defenseless and show what a cruel, evil Joker he was.

Ahem. **I** am a geek. I play computer games. I have many weapons and a good supply of ammo for each. My wife gardens and I have a diesel truck with an auxiliary tank. So, technically, my home is just as potentially dangerous at the Aurora Nutcase's was.

Yet. . . no shooting sprees. No mass murders. You get my point, I hope.

Oh, and BTW:

OK. Now let's define the situation a little further.

Do you have PTSD?

Do you have access to the latest experimental mind altering drugs being tested for use on PTSD patients ?

After a life of never owning any guns, did you just suddenly buy 2 pistols, a shotgun, a rifle, 6000 rounds of ammo, and enough chemical mixtures to launch a satellite into space?

Did you call a shooting range to schedule a session, and they turned you down ?

Do you have what sounds like a drunk JOKER from BATMAN for the message on your phone?

Did you just drop out of a college PHD program ?

Did you just die your hair red ?

Are you unemployed and living off your tuition loan?

Do you have a girlfriend/wife? (well, we know that answer).

Have you sent emails to your friends asking them if they will visit you in prison ?

If you can say NO to all of these, I'm pretty sure you are not the problem.

Sure. Did you get my point ?

It was the this scholarly, computer game playing young man SUDDENLY went out and bought as much or more guns/ammo than you have.

Does he have the right ? YES.

Do the agencies that we pay for have the right to consider this information as a 'potential' problem. Well... that's why they tell us they need the info.

Funny how having that info didn't help. Too busy with South American hookers or playing undercover cop with the Mexican Cartels, I guess.

How are any of these things illegal ?

And where, pray tell, would a grad student get PTSD ??

You sir, are using a Retrospectroscope, the world’s only infallible instrument.

And also, pray tell, of these “chemical mixtures”. While details are scant, it’s simple enough to make explosives out of everyday household chemicals.

In short, the only way to have put the picture together would be to have a Big Brother-level ubiquitous surveillance system.

And even THAT would have a hard time catching someone who simply just went nuts. . .

How are any of these things illegal ?

Individually, they are not.

And where, pray tell, would a grad student get PTSD ??

PTSD, PSTD, SAD, OCD, BPD, whatever fancy acronym they use for indicating someone is mentally ill.

You sir, are using a Retrospectroscope, the world’s only infallible instrument.

I was thinking more of a 'profile'. It is what the FBI says they use to protect us. That is why they collect the info. Too bad it didn't help in this case.

And also, pray tell, of these “chemical mixtures”. While details are scant, it’s simple enough to make explosives out of everyday household chemicals.

Let's just say that it's simple enough for a graduate student to order some of the necessary materials without drawing much attention. Since the police have not revealed the actual ingredients of what they found (and they shouldn't. That should be saved for the trial), it is really hard to say what was used. I don't think they released a list of what 'chemicals' he purchased, either online or through the college 'purchase system'.

In short, the only way to have put the picture together would be to have a Big Brother-level ubiquitous surveillance system.

True. My point is that they already have quite a bit of 'big brother' in place, and yet it seems that this guy, and the guy from the Ft. Hood Massacre , and countless others seem to 'escape' the notice of 'big brother'. Perhaps, in this case, it all happened too quickly, and no red flags were generated in time. Or perhaps the idea of monitoring the entire public to prevent crime is a wasted and unrealistic effort.

And even THAT would have a hard time catching someone who simply just went nuts. . .

And I think that is the bottom line to this case.

Back to the original disagreement, I was only trying to point out that you , while being a geek and having guns, have not exhibited signs of mental illness (such as building bombs and wiring your door to them).

This guy did, and also did many other things. You have been around guns for a long time. This guy, as far as we know, had not. THAT was the main difference I tried to point out (yet failed).
