SAINT PETERSBURG — Seventy-three people have been prosecuted for violating new anti-gay legislation imposed in Russia's former imperial city Saint Petersburg four months ago, police said Friday.
The law which punishes public homosexual and paedophile "propaganda" with fines of up to 500,000 rubles (12,800 euros/$15,600) has been criticised by human rights activists as homophobic.
"Seventy-three people have been prosecuted for homosexual propaganda and one person for paedophile propaganda," Saint Petersburg police chief Sergei Umnov was quoted as saying by his press service.
No details were given on the offences or the sentences imposed.
The law was promoted by the ruling United Russia party and adopted by Saint Petersburg's city assembly in February.

“When asked to comment on the new law the same month the US State Department said the United States was concerned by legislation that “would severely restrict freedoms of expression and assembly for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals, and indeed all Russians”.”
Heck, as far as I know gay Russians can do anything they want. They just have to come to Europe, or better yet, the US, where they can join the Navy and march with ‘pride’ down their streets.
And ours put on military uniforms, and flamboyantly celebrated their depravity in a parade. And gay propaganda is flooding the schools, universities, and public square.

Tell me about it. Whether we like it or not, they are trying their best to protect their society. We’re too afraid to do the same.
The Russian public obviously has a higher moral standard than the American public.
It’s a shame.
It has happend from within--without their doing.
Their re-instituting biblical principles into their society. A decade ago they where bring pastors and clergy over to figure out what they had missed, as their moral culture was and is dismal. They came to the conclusion that cutting GOD out of their culture had been a big mistake. What a shock!
The within was their doing, with our communist faithful professors, media, and politicians all helping.
I doubt this has anything to do with morals and more with their declining birth rate.
Ironically, that is exactly what Khrushchev meant.
Right. The Russians are the ones who wind up with a robust moral standard and a will to keep society on a footing which does not harm youth. We on the other hand have gone to the dogs , have embraced the will to extinction, and look like fools into the bargain.
