Investigators track Colo. shooting suspect's ammo shipments
CBS News ^ | July 21, 2012 | by Bob Orr

(CBS News) Sources say investigators have found key evidence in dumpsters and trash bins outside of James Holmes' apartment, including a shipping label from an internet ammunition store called BulkAmmo.com.

Investigators also tell CBS News they have recovered a surveillance video of James Holmes picking up approximately 150 pounds of ammunition at a Federal Express outlet in Colorado.

They've interviewed a UPS driver who says Holmes had 90 packages delivered to his workplace on the University of Colorado medical campus.

And sources say over the past several months, Holmes spent about $15,000 as he was putting together his deadly arsenal -- guns, chemicals, explosives, and ammunition.

"Through the Internet he purchased over 6,000 rounds of ammunition, more than 3,000 rounds of. 223 ammunition for the assault rifle, 3,000 rounds of .40 caliber ammunition for the two Glocks in his possession and 300 rounds for the 12 gauge shotgun."

Holmes did most his shopping on Internet sites. And he was clearly in a hurry.

A receipt from TacticalGear.com shows on July 2 -- two-and-a-half weeks before the shootings -- Holmes purchased a bulletproof vest and other equipment. He paid extra to have it shipped by 2nd-day air.

I don’t think he counted on the police’s 1.5 minute response time at the theater. I really think he expected to drive away.

To TN, maybe? He could make that trip before dawn, and had TN plates on ‘whoever’s’ car.

What was his plan for 6,000+ rounds? He used only a fraction of that at the theater.

Good question. According to the snooze reports he had buckets full of ammo in his apartment, the same place he rigged to blow up...It doesn't make sense.

Then again, maybe it's all BS?

I dunno...

I have read several articles that say the amount is closer to $20K, and the armor was high grade military as well as the trapping of the his apartment.
How did a guy who never had issues with the law and with no military experience plan such an event?
And why did he surrender without a fight?
Is it really that simple to buy the stuff and plan an assault such as this?

Which begs the question- who was bankrolling this guy?

The MOTHER knows the answer to your question. She knew all about it. That is the big mystery, and why (unfortunately, because I am already sick of it) this story will remain on the front page for weeks.

Spending $15,000 but not employed and collecting unemployment...and in a hurry? Something about this whole thing isn’t ringing true. Very strange.

I would think they would be a lot more interested in where he got the idea to shoot to begin with. The guns didn’t do the shooting, he did.

Not when one's motivation is to STOP other Americans from purchasing ammo.

The media has been able to find out more on this fellow in 24 hours than they have on obama in 51 years.

The ABC15 Investigators have linked an additional 43 weapons recovered during a Phoenix traffic stop to the controversial Fast and Furious ATF case.

According to court paperwork, Phoenix Drug Enforcement Administration agents discovered the guns in mid-April. They pulled over a vehicle near 83rd Avenue and Interstate 10, near the Phoenix and Tolleson border.

Documents filed in federal court reveal five suspects named in the case are accused of conspiring to possess and distribute “500 grams or more of a mixture or substance containing a detectable amount of methamphetamine…”…

Agents recovered at least 59 weapons during the bust. The ABC15 Investigators found 43 are connected to the Fast and Furious case with certainty.

If it does turn out to be true, I definitely wouldn't be surprised.

I am still in the very apprehensive and doubtful column but I have stepped away from 'absolutely not'. But I agree, it wouldn't shock me now. Though, if it turned to fact, it would forevermore leave me with a difficult time doubting a thing.

Odd there’s no manifesto. Isn’t that SOP for these cowards?

He wouldn’t have left one in that apartment.

I’ll bet someone has his tawdry screed, and is sitting on it.

It’s also not that hard to get a high-interest loan from a finance company, or as I like to call them, the legal loan sharks. It should be very easy for them to find out where the money came from.

“He spent $15,000 on ammunition? Only God, and now the police, know how much was spent on other gear including weapons”

Exactly, sounds like over 20K... a lot of explaining to be done by someone. AND has all that ammo been accounted for?

Nope. I fully expect a federal law taxing every single bullet sold. Buy a 50 round box and get hit with a $250 tax. Wait. It will come.

Once had a guy in the Army come into our legal office with financial problems. He had like seven maxed out credit cards and owed like $35,000 and could not pay a dime of it. I told him to go down town and get himself a lawyer and file for bankruptcy. (P.S. military lawyers cannot represent troops down town. Local lawyers cry foul when gov paid lawyers rep troops free).

My first reaction as well.. This isn’t chump change. Investigators should spend more time on his financing than his Internet purchases. He spends $15k to shoot people in a movie theater? I want to know why the cops refrained from going to his apartment earlier that night to tell him to turn down his loud techno music.. There were complaints phoned in.
