A Colorado teenager who survived the mass shooting at a midnight screening of "The Dark Knight Rises" in Aurora this morning helped keep a young mother, her young child and her 4-month-old infant safe even though he was injured himself.
Jarell Brooks, 19, has been released from Denver General Hospital and is now recovering at home after he suffered a gunshot wound to the leg after James Holmes, once a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Colorado, allegedly set off smoke bombs and opened fire on the unsuspecting audience, killing 12 people and injuring at least 50 in the attack.

While trying to get out of the theater, he saw a woman, later identified as Patricia Legarreta, struggling to get herself and her two children out. He said he crawled on top of Legarreta in an attempt to push her and the kids out the door but then couldn't get out himself.

That's when Brooks said he felt a shot to his leg. Brooks said he was shot in the thigh, and fell to the ground.
Patricia Legarreta was also hit.

This woman’s husband wasn’t running away. He was leading the way - showing everyone the way out. Yeah, that’s the ticket.
What kind of morons take their infants to midnight showings of loud, violent movies? Having a baby enriches your life but limits your immediate options. Adjust to it. Find a babysitter or stay home and watch TV. Delay gratification until you can get the movie on Netficks, There is Darwinian element to this that no one is discussing.

Saw the mother and father of these two unfortunate children on TV this AM. He has asked her to marry him after their harrowing experience. And of course, she said “yes” to this selfish loser who abandoned her and their children to save himself.
The teenager is a hero.

It sure doesn’t take them long to come out here. Good for the kid that helped others any how.
And he DROVE AWAY from the scene ASAP because he “couldn’t find her” even then—til she called on a stranger’s cellphone so she could get a ride to the hospital? Sorry, but some people are “victims” and some are just losers. A victim saved this family—and got shot for his trouble—while the loser Babydaddy got plenty of positive PR for his very, very belated marriage proposal.

Sounds like the young lady would be better off dumping Rohrs and seeing Mr. Brooks, who displays far more character and more guts.

It just shows the lack of ability to be a parent, which is extremely common these days.
Amazed at the takeaway some get from stories like this.
In an ABC interview with the young mother and the Hero, you discover that the young woman’s boyfriend later proposes to her.
In the interview, she doesn’t mention him until the reporter asks her about the proposal. No mention of the cowardly boyfriend leaving her and the kids in danger.
She will be making a big mistake if she ever marries the creep.

No, I read the interview yesterday. He left them. He even set the 4 month old down on the floor because he was crying. He was in the car, driving away, before it hit him. Then he asked himself ‘what kind of man would leave his son?’ and went back.
I believe that that was the point when she was calling him for help.
He sounds like an opportunist. Yes, a selfish loser, who never lets a good crisis go to waste.

Someone told me when I was much younger, that you are not REALLY an adult until you have children. I did not agree with this...at first.

At a midnight showing of a “Batman” movie, I’m guessing most patrons were men between 17 and 35.
Do you think a theater full of, say, World War II vets in their twenties would have panicked and cut and run like this? Or would SOMEONE have counterattacked the psychopath?

Maybe they were bent over walking— mom bent over the children and the young man bent over her? I am puzzling this myself. I am guessing it is just explained poorly because from reading the rest it appears they were walking, not laying.

No, the title is not presumptuous. The father is an absolute disgrace. His girlfriend, I mean fiancée, even tried to cover for his worthless rear end. He is the poster boy for slack jawed wimps, sissies and every other assorted girly man. RuPaul, Devine and every gay male looks manly compared with him. Every woman on earth, is more courageous than that cowardly cretin.

The young man who actually did save this imbecile’s family is an actual hero. He stayed behind to help the woman and her children and he got shot in the process.
Mr. brooks is definitely a hero ad sounds like he was raised right.
