Penn State To Remove Paterno Statue This Weekend
WFAN ^ | 7-20-2012 | Kim Jones

NEW YORK (WFAN) – It seems the fate of Joe Paterno’s statue at Penn State has been sealed.

“Am told that Penn State plans to take down the Paterno statue this weekend,” Kim Jones of the NFL Network and WFAN reported via Twitter on Friday.

Paterno, fired by the university last year amid the Jerry Sandusky child sexual abuse scandal, died in January. His legacy was further tarnished by a scathing report released last week by former FBI director Louis Freeh.

The Freeh report accused the former coach and other university officials of “repeatedly” concealing “critical facts relating to Sandusky’s child abuse” in order to avoid bad publicity.

Many have since called for the removal of Paterno’s likeness in front of Beaver Stadium. A banner even flew above Penn State this week with the message, “Take the statue down or we will.”

Sandusky was convicted in June on 45 of 48 counts of sexual abuse against 10 boys, some within PSU’s athletic facilities.

The Paterno family plans to launch its own investigation in the wake of the Freeh report.

“The announcement of the findings by the Freeh Group is yet another shocking turn of events in this crisis,” the family said in a statement Monday. “We are dismayed by, and vehemently disagree with, some of the conclusions and assertions and the process by which they were developed. Mr. Freeh presented his opinions and interpretations as if they were absolute facts. We believe numerous issues in the report, and his commentary, bear further review.

“Our interest has been and remains the uncovering of the truth.”

I doesn’t need to be taken down, it needs to be blown up.

It has to happen. Paterno, through his willful ignorance, ruined the lives of many children and tarnished the reputation of a school and football program.

It remains to be seen whether there’s a confrontation between the people removing the statue and those misuided students/alumni who think that nothing is wrong.

Better have some security on-hand. The student body up there is delusional and prone to tantrums.

I hear that NAMBLA has expressed interest in obtaining the statue.

Thought they’d do this. My next question is who in the NCAA knew this, heard the scuttle and did nothing as well—like report what they heard to police.

They'll be searching the same golf courses where OJ was looking for his wife's killer.

My guess is it’s going to end up staying for awhile. From what I’ve heard, there’s going to be a defensive effort (so to speak) that will make the Vietnam era look tame....

Just install a rotating base underneath it. Tourists could make it ‘look the other way’.

JoePa Could have done the honorable thing, by addressing the matter to the authorities when it was brought up. But, he continued to deny his involvement until his dying day. Screw you Joe Paterno and your piss poor legacy.

Until it is removed, I would be throwing lots of birdseed at it’s feet!

Let the pigeons cover it in appropriate comment.

What took the leadership(?) at Pedophile Sanctuary University so long to agree to do the obvious? By waiting so long to arrive at this conclusion indicates that the assigned leaders (they really aren’t leaders they are public relations specialist) at PSU still possess little or no empathy for the young innocent victims and still are seeking ways to salvage Paterno’s reputation. This is impossible to do. They may have finally been forced by public opinion (airplanes in the sky) into doing today what they should have done weeks ago.

All depends on whether the University really wants that statue down. They could use the student oppostion as an excuse to leave it up for a time. But anybody who has witnessed the PSU security thump students attempting to take down the goal posts after a big win (I know, it’s been awhile) knows that they don’t mind bloodying a few noses and using pepperspray.

I was thinking if they’d decided to let it stay up they’d then put up a statue of Sandusky, just to be consistent. But they did the right thing.

Pedo-State.

Sandusky: From Penn State to the State Pen.

Good move. Next they need to dismantle the football program.

But I expect the NCAA will do that.

But then again... there are millions of dollars at stake. And what’s a few sore buttholes anyway in contrast to the millions of dollars at stake, right?

"The Freeh report accused the former coach and other university officials of “repeatedly” concealing “critical facts relating to Sandusky’s child abuse” in order to avoid bad publicity. "

I've read this but no details. How did Paterno repeatedly conceal? Anyone got any reference?
