When Tech. Sgt. Erwynn Umali and civilian Will Behrens wanted to seal their commitment in a civil union in New Jersey, they chose a venue that nine months ago would have been unthinkable: a military base.
The grooms said their vows on June 23 before 150 guests at the chapel at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst — the first time a civil union or gay wedding has been held in such a facility in the United States.
While the couple says there’s still a larger battle to be won before they can live in true domestic bliss, they hope the significance of that ceremony will not be lost on others in the military who want to live openly.
“It’s a struggle that Will and I have gone through and so many people are going through,” Umali, an active-duty serviceman in the Air Force, told the Daily News on Wednesday. “Now I can introduce Will as my partner or my husband instead of my friend or my boyfriend. We don’t have to live in fear.”

The military could not have timed this better. They are getting rid of people right now. They do not need any retention numbers because they already have too many people not only in the military but loads ready to reenlist at the first call. Seriously this is a disaster because they will never blame DADT on poor retention because by the time there is poor retention (when the economy recovers in 20 years) they won’t blame it on DADT because it will be long forgotten. We are in poor shape in this country for many reasons. One is our lack of morals as a whole.
Then conscription will come back. The elitists will be able to buy or influence their way out. You will then have many soldiers who don't want to be there, aren't treated well, and morale and discipline will plummet. Sounds like the Russian Army, doesn't it? Different paths, same result.
I don't vote for evil or liberal candidates. Voting for such candidates advances evil and liberalism with my vote. That is unacceptable.
The ONLY chance of the country moving the right in the next five years is electing a record number of Republicans to congress and someone like Scott Walker as President in 2016. Anything else results in the nation moving to the left for eight more years.

Me, too. I refused to reenlist with my first combat engineer unit (cbt. light, National Guard), after a social worker who transferred from the Navy was put in charge of my combat platoon. Very young commander at the time told us to leave, if we didn’t like it. Ate the hell up. Word was, after I left, most of the younger soldiers in the unit left, too. Went to try a combat heavy (construction) unit for one year after that. Naw. Working civilian jobs while being in the Guard became nearly impossible. Decided to get on out for good.
When I go to work, it’s not for playing social politics. That includes civilian lines of work. I only show up to do the work.

One thing I learned working with the military is never get between the nose of a careerist and the butt of their commander. And if you ever wonder if most military officers would give the order to fire on American civilians, keep that in mind.

Agreed. Has been for some time actually, at least since January 22, 1973. My respect for veterans is still there, but current support the military type threads get a barf alert from me.

If the military allows this then they should do away with their fraternatization rules and stop punishing members who have affaires. Polygamy should also be allowed as well as transgendered individuals. If the military is going to open doors to gays it should open them for all right???

Sadly this is the truth about much of the Federal army, air-force, and navy. Honor, and patriotism probably does indeed take a distant backseat to the Government paycheck.
I do not believe many in our modern military would shy away from becoming the oppressive tool of a tyrant against their own people. I do not even think the laws of congress would stop most of them.
We have in the Federal Military the tool of a monster, it is in my opinion only a matter of time before that tool is used against us.
