Is the murder of the Syrian strongmen the beginning of the end?
The Guardian ^ | Wednesday 18 July 2012 | Martin Chulov

The road to Damascus had been the Syrian opposition's most difficult journey. Now, after one decisive and deadly strike, the world's oldest capital appears in reach.

As the dust settled at the national security building, a transformation unthinkable only hours earlier was under way. Three of the regime's leaders lay dead around the table where they had been holding a weekly crisis meeting: the deputy defence minister, Assef Shawkat, the defence minister, Dawoud Rajha, and the military committee leader, Hassan Turkmani, all key figures in the Middle East's most ruthlessly efficient police state.

Of the three, Shawkat had long been the main target. His influence and power had been unmatched since the popular uprising began nearly 17 months ago. Shawkat was, as Syrian rebels like to say, the keeper of the secrets.

Every strategic decision about the crackdown carried out by President Bashar al-Assad's regime that had steadily morphed into full-blown war had passed across his desk. He was an essential part of the inner sanctum. In many eyes, he was a symbol of its infallibility.

I used to do SIGINT for the U.S.Navy.

Hafez Assad, like his father before him, played all sides. Did he support Saddam Hussein. Hell yes; he lived next door! Did he have agreements with the Russians? Yes. Did he have secret agreements with the U.S.A.? Again, yeas. Has he protected Syrian Christians? Yes.

There is no more terrible place on earth to live surrounded by those who would murder you than in the Middle East.

The Arab Spring has achieved a singular achievement: it has wiped out all emerging capitalist markets in North Africa. The Muslim Brotherhood is opposed to western capitalism.

You think Assad will use his chemical weapons?

Of course he will use them. His predecessor used them in Hom to control a revolt by the Muslim Brotherhood a few decades ago. The defector who claimed that Assad was joining forces with al Qeade, kinda ridiculous, but he also claimed there is evidence Assad has already used chemical WMD in Hom. Do not believe that and think everything that defector said was pre written by the those funding and supporting the insurgents (IE - House of Saud, Turks, NATO, Obama and Hillary).

The plain fact of the matter is the pentagon must be blowing a top right now. This battle plan for Syria is absolutely insane. Its as if the Pentagon put together a few plans, they had to include all options, and Obama choose the one that was just put on the table because all options had to be shown. No one probably thought any one with half a clue would have selected this battle plan.

I said the same people against removing Assad were against removing Saddam. I was talking about ignorant Ron Paul type isolationists with their heads up their asses duped by anti-American Russian propaganda. You said the Dems were against removing Saddam but that is not true. Only one democrat voted against removing Saddam. The rest voted for regime change including Hillary herself. Did you forget all that?

We didn’t stop Saddam from gassing his own people and we won’t stop Assad either. Not without Comrade Putin’s permission.

Or worse yet, because King Saud clapped his hands and when his blue-eyed slave appeared, he TOLD him that that we needed to attack Syria.

The choice is Ba’athists or Muslim Brotherhood; all thinks considered, I’d pick the Ba’athists. They just plain ol’ fascists, which are several steps up from Islamists...

Still the ideal outcome is mutual annihilation and civil collapse.

Worrying about Basher and his Alawite cousins as Christians is a somewhat misplaced concern. This bunch ain’t exactly Baptists. Alawites were an off-shoot of really early Christianity and there is little that they do as a group that can remotely be called biblical/evangelical. Basher and his daddy kept themselves and their Buds in power by stepping on the heads of everyone else and that is the bottom line reason they are going to get their throats cut. Ask yourself why it is that Basher’s best Buds are communists and Iranian fascists? How Christian is that?

Remember a few months back when the young guys who started the fight said they didn’t want any outside help except weapons? These young guys are pretty westernized——they see there is a better way to do business. As with the rest of the Arab Spring it’s going to be messy but from what I see the younger crowd is sick of putting up with the old tribal krap. And by the way-—the Saudis are going to get it too. You heard it here first. All these old camel jockies have used the Obamuzzie method of keeping most of their populations down——keeping the good stuff for themselves-——and retribution is coming all the way around.

As best I can tell so far both the Omans and the Saudis are helping the Syrian Rebs with weapons. They got a few heat seekers someplace. They have weapons good enough to knock out a Syrian /Russian tank as well as a chopper. Basher can’t use any chemz he might have unless he can find someone willing to deliver them and, referring to the above map, he would have to drop them on hisself to get the Rebs that are his biggest threat.-——Just sayin’ Basher is DONE.

Why do we continue to fret about what’s happening in Syria? Understand this, they are muslims killing muslims. Let them at each other. I will garantee you, that if a when this monster is either driven out or killed like Kadafi, within a year, they will elect another monster to replace him. This is all they know. Trying to make these countries into a western type of a democratic republic, is like trying to make a silk purse out of a sows ear. IT CAN’T BE DONE. Look at what’s happening in Iraq? That government, that was “ELECTED” by the Iraqis, will eventually become what they had with Sadaam Hussein, only maybe they will be worse. It’s just a matter of time until a strong man appears to finish the job. So, let’s not have any day dreams that they will all of a sudden become a “DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC”

"...he has no choice in order to protect his ethnic minority, the Alawites. They will get slaughtered if the Sunni wins the Civil War. And then, it’ll be open season on Christians in Syria." The Alawites themselves claim to be a sect of Shia' Islam. They believe in reincarnation. The basic doctrine of the Alawite faith is the deification of Ali. He is one member of a trinity corresponding roughly to the Christian Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, but they are NOT Christian. Do you believe that Muḥammad ibn Nuṣayr an-Namīrī is god? The Alawites do. I continue to see this myth repeated by what I guess are Christians in the US. Not sure how this lie got started. Sadly, Americans are famous for knowing almost nothing about the history, cultures, and traditions of people outside of our borders. How embarrassing.

Thank you for your post. I too appreciate knowing at least one other person on the planet is questioning our leader’s seeming to aplaud cowardly terrorist acts of violence, no matter at whom they are aimed.

It should be a matter of astonishment to all Americans that we reigned terror from above on two Middle Eastern leaders that, at least, maintained a somewhat open diplomatic channel with the United States. I have no love for dictators but the shameless way in which we stacked the deck to allow terrorists to murder or depose them is distasteful and beneath us as a Nation. Our open support of Al Queada and the Muslim Brotherhood this spring can’t be viewed as anything but deliberate. Unless, of course, you assume our present Administration to be that naive, which is ridiculous.

When these cowardly tactics become a reality on our own soil, we will no longer have any moral or believable basis for condemning them. We have been guilty of condoning them.

And, by the way, how does this figure with the policy of tying our soldiers hands by preventing them from having their weapons at the ready in combat or preventing them from recon missions in Afghanistan?

All signs point to something unthinkable but someone had better start thinking before it’s too late for our Nation. Stop listening to Dims like John McCain and look into what is becoming obvious.

It was my detailer at Meade and my designation that was the cause of that. Remember that dumb cover story that NSG gave us in briefing way back when? I can’t accurately but it did mention the study of radio wave propagation and some other (XG).
