I have a part time job in the wine & spirits department of a large grocery store where customers are allowed to check out small grocery purchases along with their beer, wine or liquor purchases. It is very common to see people using SNAP EBT cards to purchase $20 worth of junk food like chips, soda and other snack foods and pay for that purchase with their EBT card and then pay cash for $25+ worth of beer or liquor. I even had a young woman use WIC coupons to purchase baby formula and then pay $100 cash for a keg of beer. The simplest way to end abuse of the EBT program would be to restrict SNAP purchases to only “healthy” food items and not allow users to buy junk food. That would also address the obesity problem far better than any of Michelle Obama’s eat broccoli programs.

I had an ER patient yesterday explain to me how she slipped and fell at the grocery on a puddle because she was asking the butcher if the meat was on sale and she only had a little left on her food stamps and “ needed” to get a Pick 5 lottery ticket too. By the way she stopped at her lawyer on the way to the ER.. I wanted to vomit.
