12 Principals and Assitants Removed for CPS Lunch Scam
NBC Chicago ^ | 13 July 2012 | Unknown

Posted on 07/13/2012 12:09:31 PM PDT by Lurker

The Chicago Public School system has removed 12 principals and assistant principals for allegedly falsifying free and reduced lunch forms for their own children, according to a report from the Office of the Inspector General and CPS.

None of the 12 assistant principals or principals have been charged with a crime, but have been removed from their posts pending due process hearings. Their names have been withheld during the hearing process. The program costs about $100 million per year and is meant to provide nutritious meals to needy children.

“The investigation by the OIG has uncovered continuing fraud in this program and we will not stand for any lapse in ethical judgment by our school leaders,” said CPS Chief Executive Officer Jean-Claude Brizard. “CPS employees have an obligation to the students, families and taxpayers of this District to hold themselves to the highest ethical standards. We simply cannot, and will not, allow any employee to break the trust that parents and children of this District place in us every day.”

Chicago, Chicago that toddlin' town! More on the "Free Lunch" scam which is one of the most gigantic taxpayer rip offs ever. Billions in school "aid" are tied to the numbers and percentages of kids receiving "free" lunches.

Right, which is also tied in to the stories recently about schools banning kids from bringing homemade lunches “for health reasons”. In reality, they just want to force more kids to eat the “free” lunch so they can keep the gravy train from DC coming.

12 Principals and Assitants Removed for CPS Lunch Scam

Dang Assitants.

lapse in ethical judgment

BZZZZZT. Wrong.
Sorry, but "lapse in ethical judgment" implies some sort of momentary failure.
This is a long-term LACK of ethical judgement, or more correctly, a DELIBERATE ATTEMPT TO RIP OFF THE SYSTEM.

We simply cannot, and will not, allow any employee to break the trust that parents and children of this District place in us every day.

BZZZZZT. Wrong. Thanks for playing.
Does anybody really "place their trust" in you anymore?

People place their kids with you, because they either have, or think they have, no other choice.

School administrators will do almost anything to pump up the numbers of kids on these programs. Almost every other “aid” and “grant” program imaginable is tied directly to the percentage of kids receiving the free lunch.

The SLD alone burns through well over a couple of billion a year.

A question I’ve always had:

Here in Indiana, we have 369,000 children on the Govt breakfast and lunch program. And the schools are also open in the summer to serve breakfast and lunch even though class is not in session.

Is this amount of free food considered in the calculation of the food stamp benefits supplied to the family?

In the state of Colorado the calculation is not considered...they do not deduct the cost of the free lunches and breakfasts from the monthly food stamp amount

This cost is peanuts ... Looks to me like real Chicago crooks are using principals as whipping boys.

I don't know for a fact but I suspect that it is not. That would require logic and inter-governmental cooperation in an effort to minimize the expense and protect the taxpayer.

Therefore I am almost certain that I am correct in my suspicions.

Principals, who don’t get mere peanuts, did this??? I don’t know what stinks more, how criminal it was or how chintzy it was.

Still, why would the principals do it. It’s almost on the level of “ha ha, I scored one” rather than making off with significant money. Still that’s so many free lunches less available for the actual needy. Bet these are liberals all too.

The article says that these were Principals making upwards of 70 grand a year. Leaving that aside, falsifying these forms is a Felony. These are Federal dollars we are talking about here.

And these crooks are being allowed to simply resign or be fired. You try falsifying a Federal aid form sometime and watch if you get to just say “sorry”, resign, and walk away.

The entire CPS is shot through with this kind of crap.

Should be sacked for stupidity....risking a six figure salary position let alone jail time over free lunches?

Terminally stupid.

Free lunch isn’t even means tested in many places.

Here in the Twin Cities you can get ‘free’ breakfast, dinner, and snack, too at some rec centers. And not just for students.

Here in Washington, the schools serve free box lunches to anyone under the age of 18. All they have to do is show up. It’s not need based or anything.

Doubtless there was a warning in the boilerplate on the form that intentional false statements to get aid would be considered a crime. And these doofuses went ahead and did it anyhow? What does a scandal like this look like to the school kids? In my day, the biggest educator scandal was teachers’ strikes. But at least they didn’t steal.

Oh! This was surely intended to mean “assistants” not “assitants.” Although maybe they do mostly “sit” around on their, ahem, “ass” for all we know.
