Neighbors stunned at fatal shooting of armed teen by Sacramento police

A makeshift memorial marked the spot on Dixie Lou Street where a teen was shot multiple times and killed by Sacramento police Saturday after what officers said was a struggle over an assault weapon stowed in the youth's clothes.

Ascencion Herrera was 17. Sacramento County coroner's officials said he died just before 7 p.m. Saturday, about a half-hour after he was shot.

The two officers involved in the shooting – both in their third year with the force – remained on paid administrative leave Monday, said Sacramento police spokeswoman Michele Gigante.

As friends and the curious made their way to the Meadowview location, on Monday covered with votive candles, family photos and offerings of beer and tequila, neighbors continued to grapple with Saturday's shooting.

Williams said she saw one of the officers leave the patrol car and hold Herrera against a plywood fence while the second officer stayed back.

She said the officer "tried to throw him down, but (Herrera) wouldn't go down."

That was when the officer spotted the butt of the weapon protruding from the teen's clothing.

"The cop stepped back and yelled 'Gun,' and fired," Williams said. She and Jones say they heard five shots.

Both said they realize Herrera was carrying a weapon. But "they could've took the gun off that boy," she said. "It shouldn't have happened like that."

It would have been the same if he were holding a dog.

"added that Herrera had had run-ins with police – break-ins, thefts. He was, Johns said, a "small-time guy."

Made the bigs.

This worthless punk’s family just won the lottery. But it will still be a net gain for society....if he had lived he would have cost society 10 times what the settlement will be.

"...someone walking the streets with an assault rifle..."

How did he have an assault rifle hidden in his pants?

It sounds like she will make a good witness for the officers.

votive candles, family photos and offerings of beer and tequila

Is Herrera's thirsty spirit drinking the beer and tequila after midnight? *eerie music*

Let's see what the take away lesson is.

Trayvon Martin: Carry a gun.

This case: Carry a bigger gun.

Several years ago I was coming back from shooting at the range carrying a fully loaded pistol as I legally could with my CCW. Looked in my mirror and say the blue lights flashing. Pulled over rolled the window down and kept my hands clearly visible on the steering wheel. When the officer walked up I told him that I was carrying a legal firearm and asked him what he would like me to do.

I followed his instructions to the letter and there was no harm no foul.

But then again I wasn't a small time thug interested in being a jack wad.

“Herrera was walking with that friend, the assault rifle tucked in his clothes, police said, when the Sacramento police cruiser pulled beside him Saturday. The unidentified youth, who was not hurt in the incident, was briefly detained and later released to his family, Gigante said.”

Yes indeed, they could have seen that by the way he was walking.

17 year old mexican, with an assult rifle, refusing to follow cop commands. Im GLAD they blew out his lamp. Thinking of the innocent people he won’t victimize. Glad the cops went home safe.

Bet the neighbors wouldnt be lighting candles on a roadside memorial if he could have shot the cops first.

Funny how they never mention what actual weapon that was being carried by the deceased. If by “assualt weapon” they mean an AK-47 type or M-16/AR-15/M-4 type, my question is, how do you conceal it under your clothing, especially with a magazine attached, and given the light clothing probably worn given the summer heat?

Until the neighbors get to her to ammend her story.

When will the media start showing pictures of him as a choir boy or kindergarten angel?

Great picture!

If my teenage son was to be memorialized upon dying unfortunately, I suppose we’d have to make offerings of hair-styling products, so that his hair could be as perfect in the Hereafter as it is in life.
