As court fight looms over voter ID, those who have none fear losing voice

EL CENIZO — Much of 83-year-old José Zuniga's time is spent in his wheelchair gazing across a gravel yard that's nestled among shoddily constructed cinder block houses and deteriorating trailers in this border town that has the distinction of being one of the poorest places in the United States.

He's homebound for the most part, but one of the few events that gets Zuniga out of the house is election day.

But now Zuniga's ability to cast a ballot is in jeopardy.

Excuses, Excuses,

Not willing to go out of your way to get an ID? Maybe you don't need to be voting.

Agree wholeheartedly.

Jose, go get an ID. It’s not hard here in Texas, not hard at all.

As far as I’m concerned, if you’re too lazy or whiny to get a valid ID, you have no business voting.

GOOD!

That's exactly the way it's supposed to work and why the law was enacted.

Hey Jose!

You need to get out more. If you’re going to vote for a living, you need to have an ID.

You should have to have a valid citizen’s ID to receive welfare also.

If I remember correctly the office of homeland defense required each citizen to have an Id. I guess that if you do not drive, cash checks... you do not need an ID. I sure hope they require an Id to collect food stamps. I needed an ID to visit the Social Security office. How do you get medical care without ID. Is it really possible to live with out an ID? Why should unknown people vote any way.

If the problem is you’re not legal and you still want to vote? Eff off.

This is complete BS.

Tennessee passed voter ID law and then provided funds for a FREE none DL photo ID if you proved you were a US Citizen. Because a lot of elderly don’t have photos on their DL’s any more in this state. Only thing I removed from mine was my SS number.

My DL is all I present when I vote though I have a voter’s registration card too.

I have to present both DL and Military ID to get on the Navy base. And they have restricted us retirees to the back gate on the weekends, as it is strictly PIN number for the secondary front gate, they closed the main gate, and are moving all those ID provider units to the secondary gate....waste of rather new buildings, and have to build more at second gate. Why didn’t they just put the PIN machine at the first gate and close the second if they wanted to go down to just one guarded gate on the weekends? Cheaper.

the former migrant farm worker — who's registered to vote but lacks a photo ID — won't be allowed to vote at the polls, though he still could apply to vote by mail because of his age.

He is still allowed to vote without any photo ID, by absentee ballot. Just curious, how did he get registered to vote, without a photo ID? Is this guy an American citizen?

He is in a wheelchair, he is home-bound and has no identification? So he gets no assistance whatsoever? No insurance, no social security, no medicare,no medicaid, no visiting nurse or home health care? All of these require identification and it is hard for me to believe he is not receiving anything from any agency.

If he really is not using any insurance or Social Security or any agency then my hat is off to him for being so independent but there still has to be a way he can get some form of identification. I really don’t know where they find these people that “claim” to have NO identification or any way to get any. That is nonsense, some effort may be required but they can get identification.

If he is too lazy then it’s too bad, Jose’ can’t vote. Sorry.

I think you nailed it, he is likely not a citizen and should not have been registered to begin with. I bet he does have identification- likely one set for his country and another, or more than one set- likely bogus set for the U.S. His issue probably isn’t that he has no identification, he probably has too much.

Lot of older people choose not to have photos put on their DL’s at least in TN. But we now offer them free non DL photo ID to vote, just have to prove you are US Citizen, and eligible to vote...since Memphis is a high crime area a lot of people have lost the franchise to vote. Nor do they purge the dead from the voting rolls.

dems openly go into nursing homes where seniors are so senile they do not know what they are signing and into the jail to get absentee votes. Just as they openly campaign from the pulpit.

Well, if he decided not to drive and his DL expired, it might make sense.

But then sitting around whining about how he has no ID in a state where they are cheap and easy to get, is propaganda.

Gosh, if this one poor guy can’t vote, I guess it’s wrong to ask anyone for an ID to vote.

Texas Driver License Division Fees

It looks like Jose would have to pay 6 dollars to buy an ID with an "Indefinite Expiration date". Six bucks for what is essentially a lifetime ID? That's not much at all. And if he is a disabled veteran he can get that waived.

When it was time to take away my grandfather's driver's license, my mother hauled him to the Ohio BMV, handed in the license and got a new photo ID card to replace it on the same trip. It wasn't tricky.

Notice that the article omitted a critical bit of information?

Though Mr. José Zuniga is registered to vote, is he a citizen? All they say about him is that he was a “former migrant worker”.

Importantly, the US border with Mexico has long been so porous that lots of Mexicans lived in Texas, some even commuting back and forth. Every morning for many years there would be a stream of many Mexican children crossing the border to be educated in Texas schools, then returning to their parents homes in Mexico at the end of the school day.

So unless Mr. José Zuniga can establish his identity as a US citizen through the use of other paperwork, enough to get a photo ID, he is likely to be and remain a citizen of Mexico, whether he is registered to vote in Texas or not.

If he is confined to a wheelchair, he is eligible for an absentee ballot. Surely he knows somebody who could translate the ballot into Spanish for him.
If he has some form of transportation to the polls, why can’t he utilize the same means to go get an ID?
What prevents these concerned Democrats from picking up a few of these victims in his own car and driving them to the BMV to obtain an ID? The party can afford to pay for the ID if the person being registered is really indigent.

Listening to KLBJ this morning and they reported 800,000 more people on the voter rolls than on the TX DPS driver records. That begs the question, how many on the voter rolls have died and the rolls never updated?

They have Congressman McCall on today talking about the IRS paying the illegals billions of fraudulent dollars by claiming dependent children in other countries.

KLBJ was talking about several people who were born on Jan 1st of both 1900 and 1901. Two of them were born on Jan 1, 1900 with the last name of Cruz and lived at the same address. I would bet my next paycheck and retirement check for July that they don't exist, other than their names on tombstones.

Every morning for many years there would be a stream of many Mexican children crossing the border to be educated in Texas schools, then returning to their parents homes in Mexico at the end of the school day.

This is STILL happening, at least here in New Mexico- did Texas stop it? In my area the only change is that now the school bus from the U.S. is not allowed to cross the border into the little town ACROSS the boundary IN MEXICO to pick up students at their door to bus them back to U.S. for school. Yes, until recently the school buses went across and picked up students in Mexico...amazing, but true.

Citizens that did not agree with students from Mexico going to school here tried to stop it, but were told most of the students crossing from Mexico are U.S. citizens so they should be allowed to attend school here. They are U.S. citizens only because their mother crossed the border to have them in a U.S. hospital for citizenship- though they have no ties to U.S. the babies can get on the gravy train starting with being educated here.
