EL CENIZO Much of 83-year-old José Zuniga's time is spent in his wheelchair gazing across a gravel yard that's nestled among shoddily constructed cinder block houses and deteriorating trailers in this border town that has the distinction of being one of the poorest places in the United States.
He's homebound for the most part, but one of the few events that gets Zuniga out of the house is election day.
But now Zuniga's ability to cast a ballot is in jeopardy.

Not willing to go out of your way to get an ID? Maybe you don't need to be voting.
Agree wholeheartedly.
Jose, go get an ID. It’s not hard here in Texas, not hard at all.
As far as I’m concerned, if you’re too lazy or whiny to get a valid ID, you have no business voting.
GOOD!
That's exactly the way it's supposed to work and why the law was enacted.
He’s got 3 months to get this done.
How motivated is this guy to vote ?
83 years old and no form of ID? Give me a break.
Hey Jose!
You need to get out more. If you’re going to vote for a living, you need to have an ID.
You should have to have a valid citizen’s ID to receive welfare also.
They are willing to go out and vote but not willing to get an ID?
Yeah, right.
I wonder how ol’ Zuniga cashes his Social Security checks?
“Why should unknown people vote any way.”
Best line yet and right on the money.
How does one get through life without a Photo ID?
Notice that nowhere in the article does it say he’s a citizen.
Here’s an idea - get one. If you want to vote, get an ID. Got it?
If the problem is you’re not legal and you still want to vote? Eff off.
Hell my grandson has to have a birth cert to play freakin’ under 8 yr old football for park and rec. Get over yourself.
Not you wolfcreek! Jose...
This is complete BS.
Tennessee passed voter ID law and then provided funds for a FREE none DL photo ID if you proved you were a US Citizen. Because a lot of elderly don’t have photos on their DL’s any more in this state. Only thing I removed from mine was my SS number.
My DL is all I present when I vote though I have a voter’s registration card too.
I have to present both DL and Military ID to get on the Navy base. And they have restricted us retirees to the back gate on the weekends, as it is strictly PIN number for the secondary front gate, they closed the main gate, and are moving all those ID provider units to the secondary gate....waste of rather new buildings, and have to build more at second gate. Why didn’t they just put the PIN machine at the first gate and close the second if they wanted to go down to just one guarded gate on the weekends? Cheaper.
He is still allowed to vote without any photo ID, by absentee ballot. Just curious, how did he get registered to vote, without a photo ID? Is this guy an American citizen?
He is in a wheelchair, he is home-bound and has no identification? So he gets no assistance whatsoever? No insurance, no social security, no medicare,no medicaid, no visiting nurse or home health care? All of these require identification and it is hard for me to believe he is not receiving anything from any agency.
If he really is not using any insurance or Social Security or any agency then my hat is off to him for being so independent but there still has to be a way he can get some form of identification. I really don’t know where they find these people that “claim” to have NO identification or any way to get any. That is nonsense, some effort may be required but they can get identification.
If Jose’ can get out and vote on election day, he can certainly find time during the next three months to register.
If he is too lazy then it’s too bad, Jose’ can’t vote. Sorry.
This is the democrats preamble to vote fraud.
Here’s an idea - have the DMV take over voter registration. When they go to register, they get a free ID.
I think you nailed it, he is likely not a citizen and should not have been registered to begin with. I bet he does have identification- likely one set for his country and another, or more than one set- likely bogus set for the U.S. His issue probably isn’t that he has no identification, he probably has too much.
Lot of older people choose not to have photos put on their DL’s at least in TN. But we now offer them free non DL photo ID to vote, just have to prove you are US Citizen, and eligible to vote...since Memphis is a high crime area a lot of people have lost the franchise to vote. Nor do they purge the dead from the voting rolls.
dems openly go into nursing homes where seniors are so senile they do not know what they are signing and into the jail to get absentee votes. Just as they openly campaign from the pulpit.
Come on!! We have a program for everything. We have meals on wheels, etc. We can’t figure out how to get a state bureau to people’s homes to issue them an id so they can vote?? Please! These are sob stories to keep the fraud gravy train flowing!
I bet this perp is an illegal alien. Surely, there is one asshat moonbat LIB who in 83 years would drag his alien butt into a county office to get an official ID if the absence of an ID was the only problem. Stop the sob stories.

They aren’t going to “lose voice”,
they’re going to lose “disproportionate voice”, wherein for every legitimate vote they cast, 5 more are cast for the same party illegitimately.
Our local paper is posting front page, above the fold, AP articles bemoaning this crap. This is an obvious attempt to influence the ignorant.
The abject hypocrisy of the Left is nothing less than breathtaking.
Shi* eaters bowl full.
“83 years old and no form of ID?”
Well, if he decided not to drive and his DL expired, it might make sense.
But then sitting around whining about how he has no ID in a state where they are cheap and easy to get, is propaganda.
Gosh, if this one poor guy can’t vote, I guess it’s wrong to ask anyone for an ID to vote.
Why doesn’t both parties have the ID people come to GOTV events and give or charge whatever it is to have ID’s made up. Obviously this seems to be a problem. Not hard to figure out how to fix it.
Republicans should announce that they will PEROSNALLY take care of anyone who DOES NOT have an ID and is worried about being able to vote
You need ID for anything you do, what is the problem with getting one for voting? They are cheap and easy to get
Exactly.
I'm not sure if my grandmother-in-law, who is about to be 102, has an ID. However, if she was required to have one to vote, you just TRY and stop her from getting one.
Do they fear losing their LIFE because they can't get meds without an ID?
This is such a dishonest crock.
When he got his wheelchair did they not demand to knoiw who he was? No hospital asked him for ID? He got to be 83 years old and NO ONE asked him for ID before? In USA?
Have you ever traveled outside your home town, Jose? Can you get on a plane without a government issued ID?
Poor Jose! He’s old. He’s wheelchair-bound. He probably likes kittens and puppies and buys tasty but nutritious treats for the neighborhood kids with what few pennies he can spare, the smiles of those unwashed urchins his only reward in a dusty drag of endless, lonely days ...
Is there any cliche this author DIDN’T invoke to tear at our heartstrings?
I”m betting that Jose is just another “composite”, like Barack Obama’s girlfriends. Or Barack Obama himself, for that matter.
He is certainly getting some form of welfare and DOES need an ID to collect on that. They want all the benefits of Americans but don’t want to follow American laws.
Go back to Meh-hee-ko where they don’t need no steekin’ laws.
And if he tries to wheel himself in to vote without an ID, I will give five bucks to the poll worker who says, “No way, Jose.”
“Those evil Republicans want you to show an ID and prove you are a citizen in order to vote? That’s so evil... next they will demand you show ID and prove you are a citizen in order to receive a government check”
(Texans: “Hmmmmmm.....”)
It looks like Jose would have to pay 6 dollars to buy an ID with an "Indefinite Expiration date". Six bucks for what is essentially a lifetime ID? That's not much at all. And if he is a disabled veteran he can get that waived.
When it was time to take away my grandfather's driver's license, my mother hauled him to the Ohio BMV, handed in the license and got a new photo ID card to replace it on the same trip. It wasn't tricky.
Read properly the headline has this right.
States that do not have a voter I.D. law should fear loosing their voice and identity to the fraud of the Democrats.
Notice that the article omitted a critical bit of information?
Though Mr. José Zuniga is registered to vote, is he a citizen? All they say about him is that he was a “former migrant worker”.
Importantly, the US border with Mexico has long been so porous that lots of Mexicans lived in Texas, some even commuting back and forth. Every morning for many years there would be a stream of many Mexican children crossing the border to be educated in Texas schools, then returning to their parents homes in Mexico at the end of the school day.
So unless Mr. José Zuniga can establish his identity as a US citizen through the use of other paperwork, enough to get a photo ID, he is likely to be and remain a citizen of Mexico, whether he is registered to vote in Texas or not.
Where are all his children? None of them is able to help him get an ID? Or is he an illegal who has been here for years and never bothered to get naturalized? In that case, he shouldn’t have been voting in the first place.
If he is confined to a wheelchair, he is eligible for an absentee ballot. Surely he knows somebody who could translate the ballot into Spanish for him.
If he has some form of transportation to the polls, why can’t he utilize the same means to go get an ID?
What prevents these concerned Democrats from picking up a few of these victims in his own car and driving them to the BMV to obtain an ID? The party can afford to pay for the ID if the person being registered is really indigent.
Listening to KLBJ this morning and they reported 800,000 more people on the voter rolls than on the TX DPS driver records. That begs the question, how many on the voter rolls have died and the rolls never updated?
They have Congressman McCall on today talking about the IRS paying the illegals billions of fraudulent dollars by claiming dependent children in other countries.
A LEGAL vote is nullified by every illegal vote.
A LEGAL vote is disenfranchised by every illegal vote.
Bring your ID to the voting booth to help fight disenfranchisement.
KLBJ was talking about several people who were born on Jan 1st of both 1900 and 1901. Two of them were born on Jan 1, 1900 with the last name of Cruz and lived at the same address. I would bet my next paycheck and retirement check for July that they don't exist, other than their names on tombstones.
The left is pushing the so what meme. “so what if a few illegals vote”.
They ignore the equal protection clause of having legal voters haing their votes essentially DENIED because of illegal voting.
This is STILL happening, at least here in New Mexico- did Texas stop it? In my area the only change is that now the school bus from the U.S. is not allowed to cross the border into the little town ACROSS the boundary IN MEXICO to pick up students at their door to bus them back to U.S. for school. Yes, until recently the school buses went across and picked up students in Mexico...amazing, but true.
Citizens that did not agree with students from Mexico going to school here tried to stop it, but were told most of the students crossing from Mexico are U.S. citizens so they should be allowed to attend school here. They are U.S. citizens only because their mother crossed the border to have them in a U.S. hospital for citizenship- though they have no ties to U.S. the babies can get on the gravy train starting with being educated here.
