About as predictable as our Chief Justice.

Amongst the factors involved in Russian thinking today is the question of SlicKKK KKKlintler and Mad-dog Albright bombing a totally innocent Slavic Orthodox Christian nation for eighty days and nights including Easter Sunday and finally threatening to obliterate that nation to force it to hand an ancient territory which it owned over the a group of savages and a political organization which is basically a branch of AlQaeda.

The USSR faked its own death. I’ve been hearing this since 1991, now I’m hearing it more and more. I saw a book titled “The Perestroika Deception” on Amazon the other day; I’m thinking of ordering it.

I don’t know deception or not but communism is dead in Russia. A few old losers and mental patients are visiting communist rallies there and the rest 90% of population are running away from them as they are bubonic rats.

From a woman, Ayn Rand, that escaped from Soviet Russia

“When one observes the nightmare of the desperate efforts made by hundreds of thousands of people struggling to escape from the socialized countries of Europe, to escape over barbed-wire fences, under machine-gun fire—one can no longer believe that socialism, in any of its forms, is motivated by benevolence and by the desire to achieve men’s welfare.”

The reincarnation of the old USSR. Putin is a former KGB agent who wants nothing more than to return Russia to the "glory days" of the USSR and, slowly but surely, that's what he is doing.

Russia cannot and should not be trusted.

Russia cannot and should not be trusted.

Roger that. They still support our enemies, like Iran.

Russia going back to pre-Bolshevik foreign policy. Pan-Slavism/Orthodox with pushing their interest as the “protectors” of Christians in the Middle East. The Russians and Greeks are getting quite closer and part of Putin’s support for Assad is the Chrisitan population supports Assad. Russian resentments that it might be shut out of the Mideast, before by Britain and France and now the United States. Russia considers Iran as part of its sphere of influence that is why it plays nice with the Mullahs so to keep the US out.

The reincarnation of the old USSR.

That would be a mistake, and I don't think Putin is even considering this scenario. The reason is that USSR was formed historically as a massive land grab by Bolsheviks, in early 1920s, when those lands were nothing but dust bowls with a few cattle herders. Then Baltic republics were acquired in 1940's.

Asian republics are a complete writeoff. It was obvious all the time, but the Communist Party tried to rule them with iron fist and drive them, kicking and screaming, into some semblance of a civilized state. That did not last, and after 1990s these places happily reverted to their traditional tribal politics, vendettas, and such.

Baltic states are now well integrated into the EU. They are tiny by population and by land, and they have their own problems, so reconquering them would be impractical.

Putin may want to create the new USSR only around a few relatively civilized countries, like Russia, Belarus and Ukraine. They have 90% of all USSR's industry anyway, and probably 99% of universities. Everyone else would be an irrelevant, useless cannonball on the leg of the new union.

Putin [...] wants nothing more than to return Russia to the "glory days" of the USSR and, slowly but surely, that's what he is doing.

That's fine as long as "glory days" are all about wealth and stability. I don't think he wants, or has any chances, to return Communists to power - they failed in that job and it is clear why. Putin's plans are different. He positions himself as a "good king" with power. This is in part bad and in part good.

With regard to trust, "Nations have no permanent friends and no permanent enemies. Only permanent interests." There is no country on the planet that wouldn't sell you and your interests if that benefits them enough.

A Russian told me this, and I believe him: “Russia has no friends, only interests.” He said Americans were like children at best and at worst, Fools who believe their own propaganda. Trying to deal with them honestly is seen as weakness. They respect a strong leader. Do they like to play games—you bet—and they will push the limit to see what they can get away with.

The Russians remind me of Ali’s “Rope a Dope” strategy; I just pray we haven’t punched ourselves out.
