House Finds Holder in Contempt: 17 Democrats and 2 Republicans break with their parties

The Republican-controlled House on Thursday voted 255 to 67 to hold Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress, a historic and divisive election-year action that GOP leaders cast deadly serious and Democratic leaders dismiss as petty politics.

The unprecedented House censure of a sitting attorney general -- the Obama administration’s top lawyer – over Holder’s refusal to release internal documents tied to a botched gun-trafficking investigation saw both sides dig in. The White House asserted this week the documents are protected by executive privilege. Republicans pressed an emotional trump card that guns that slipped into the hands of drug cartels in the “Fast and Furious” operation have been linked to the deaths of a Border Patrol Agent, and hundreds of Mexicans, and the subpoenaed material would shed light about department actions in its aftermath.

The vote fell almost entirely along party lines, with just 17 Democratic defections and two Republican ones. Racial overtones came into play in the vote, as some Black lawmakers and others walked out, refusing to participate in the action against Holder, an African American.

The immediate impact of the House’s action – beyond any political repercussions – is almost nil. What’s likely next to happen, according Republican congressional sources, is that the lead House committee in the matter, chaired by Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., will file civil suit in federal court, seeking a declaratory judgment that Holder is in contempt and an injunction ordering him to comply in turning over the documents. But that action could take years to be sorted out through any appeals process. The House also has the option of referring the matter to the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia for prosecution of Holder in federal court, but Republicans know the department would probably refuse to charge its own leader.

Along with the contempt resolution, the House voted Thursday to authorize the Oversight and Government Reform Committee to initiate some legal action.

The Supreme court vote dooms Obama on many counts. The real important vote of the day was the House vote that held Attorney General, Eric Holder in criminal and civil comtempt of congrees!!! And.......all those “dirt bag” Dems marching out of the House during the vote should take a lesson from their “dirt bag” Democrats in Wisconsin that fled the state! Hello, Successful Governor Scott Walker, Republican!!!

The Senate has nothing to do with this comtempt action against Holder.

Holder is in comtempt of the HOUSE oversight committee. Not a committee in the Senate.

“Should get about .05 seconds on the news....”

So? Get out in your community, print up flyers, tack them on storefronts and trees and spread the truth.

No thanks, not worth the effort, not going to waste even one second of my precious time trying to communicate to a bunch of morons about a bunch of morons.

I think I’ll play Civ 5, so much more productive.

I have no doubt that you heard ‘Criminal Contempt” and probably other things. But we are dealing with members of Congress, most of whom are lower than a snake's belly in a wagon rut in Death Valley. I would not trust any of the 535 any further than I could throw them.
They will say anything or do anything to maintain their power or to gain an advantage.
Brian Terry and Jaime Zapada are now just pawns in the daily power struggle that is Washington District of Corruption.
I seriously doubt that anyone would even remember their names if not for the publicity and political advantage they can gain.
Screw the whole damn bunch.

most folks refer to the House as "Congress"...and the Senate as the Senate.

Maybe some folks dub in "House of Representatives" when they hear the word, Congress, but I'm not aware of anyone intentionally using that word to refer to the House only.

's alright, partner. I'm sure you've got it now.

Technically this is the House...Congress refers to both chambers.

House Finds Holder in Contempt: 17 Democrats and 2 Republicans break with their parties

So... 19 people voted to find Holder in contempt? *drumline*

If the Republicans as a party were serious about F&F they'd be focusing on things like: 1) it's a violation of treaty w/ Mexico, 2) it was an unauthorized act of war, 3) it was state sponsored terrorism, 4) it was arming cartels, and therefore aiding enemies of the several states, and therefore treason.

I have no respect anymore for the Republican Party: individuals, yes; the association, no.
