Report comes after North Carolina senate proposes bill to ban predictions of increase in rates of sea-level rise.
Research from the US Geological Survey (USGS) shows that sea levels are rising much faster between North Carolina and Massachusetts than anywhere else in the world. The news comes less than two weeks after North Carolina's Senate passed a bill banning state agencies from reporting predictions of increasing rates of sea-level rise.
Asbury Sallenger, an oceanographer at the USGS in St Petersburg, Florida, and his colleagues published their report today in Nature Climate Change1. They analysed tide-gauge records from around North America from between 1950 and 2009, and found that the rates of sea-level rise along the northern half of the eastern seaboard from Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, to Boston, Massachusetts are increasing three to four times faster than rates of sea-level rise globally.
In absolute figures, sea levels on this stretch of coast have climbed by between 2 and 3.7 millimetres per year since 1980, whereas the global increase over the same period was 0.61.0 millimetres per year.
The existence of the hotspot is consistent with the measured slowing of Atlantic Ocean circulation, which may be tied to changes in water temperature, salinity and density in the subpolar north of the ocean.
The researchers predicted that by 2100, sea levels in the hotspot would rise by between 20 and 29 centimetres above the global increase, which most oceanographers predict will be about one metre.
"Many people mistakenly think that the rate of sea-level rise is the same everywhere as glaciers and ice caps melt, said Marcia McNutt, director of the USGS. However, regional variations in temperature, water salinity and air pressure can cause rates of increase to differ considerably, as can ocean currents and land movements...

Rising sea levels can also be due to sinking land levels.
Land Erosion. Case closed.
or you built your house at low tide LOL
What will happen when the sea levels sink the moon? Something liberal moosy be dune!
You would think after the millions spent in beach restoration projects in that area of the coast, thet the higher thinkers would figure it out.
Guess not .
And these measurements had a tenth of a millimeter precision? Riiiiiight, Contnenal drift is much faster.
People build these beach homes that get wiped out each bad hurricane and then they rebuild them with the insurance money.
John Stossel does that ,free money from the government
The true fact is that biased measurements of sea level rise increase in Northwestern states in direct proportion to socialist policy making needs
“Rising sea levels can also be due to sinking land levels.”

More self serving Bulls**t to keep the research grant money rolling in ...These assh***s always have away to make people believe that the water in a bucket only rises in one spot.

There are too many people there, just move half of them to Iowa to try and counterbalance the continent.
As pointed out in an earlier thread about this topic.
Just one more broken campaign promise of Obama’s...
Thanks for the ping!
Either the globaloney is false and they have their knickers in a bunch for no good reason, or
it's actually true and we SUV-drivin' hicks in flyover country are causin' them liberals to sink into the ocean first!
Same old story and it will be the same story 300 years from now. One worry after another so that we will dutifully give up our freedoms and let the collective solve the crisis.
Liberals seem to gravitate to coastal beach areas where there are no wolves, mountain lions, or other dangerious critters to deal with, but love them from afar.

Probably because of all of the farting around going on up there by the northeast liberals.
Two or three threads earlier today on this. It’s unsettling that this nonsense is being picked up by so many “news” outlets. The 15-year old link shows what is happening in one area. Scientific explanations of the past are being overlooked (deliberately?) in favor of the old standby “global warming” and man-caused climate change as the culprit.
... or you built your house at low tide LOL ...
That’s why I left the wheels on mine.
It’s not the sea rising. Time was that area was covered with a mile and a half of ice. When it melted the land rose. Now there are liberals a mile and a half deep and since they are so full of it that they leave brown tracks everywhere they weigh more than the ice did and they have reversed the process.

“Had anyone with half a brain peer-reviewed this paper, they would have looked at the satellite data and realized that there has been little or no sea level rise in that region over the last decade. Much of the rise in sea level which the authors think they are seeing, is actually due to subsidence of the land.”

How’s Bangladesh doing? They should be under water if this is true...which it isn’t.
"I believe this idea has a strong connection with reality. I don't think we have much time. Fidel Castro said in one of his speeches I read not so long ago, 'tomorrow could be too late, let's do now what we need to do'."
"I believe it is time that we take up with courage and clarity a political, social, collective and ideological offensive across the world a real offensive that permits us to move progressively, over the next years, the next decades, leaving behind the perverse, destructive, destroyer, capitalist model and go forward in constructing the socialist model to avoid barbarism and beyond that the annihilation of life on this planet."

Your forgetting about the effects of glashal ice pushing down the land inland thus building up the land near the coast.
Coastal New England will settled into the ocean and I say good ridden
heheh closer than you think. Coastal New England actually is sinking its a phenomena known as Post-glacial rebound.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Post-glacial_rebound
Basicly ice weights a lot, so much in fact that when it covered the land in vast sheets it pushed down the crust causing the perimeter to budge up. After that ice melted 11-5 thousand years ago the crust has been slowly settling ever sense.
Looks like a refinement of what we were taught in grade school in the 1950s & 60s: "West Coast is an emerging/rising shore; East Coast is a subsiding/sinking shore."
We keep breeding new generations of the blooming idiots.
I've seen three waves now, and they all think they have discovered Nobel Prize material.
There is a very good reason why we have never heard about any of them.
OK Lefties, what should we do about it?
Came up with that answer pretty quick, didn't you?
LOL
The #1 goal of government schooling. Real thinkers resist collectivism.
We have the same issue with global average temperature measurements. No one likes to talk about it. At least no one shilling for AGW grants, or helping the whole scam along.
Ergo the correct scientific conclusion should be that the land in these areas is sinking.
The end.
ps: Next time they want this type of 'research' done, maybe should call a Plumber.
(But not on Sundays, nooo. Not Sundays.)
Oh baloney.
Also, Ice Age Rebound

For example Finland is growing by 2.7 square miles per year, the water has to go somewhere.
The land is still rising. It's called "isostatic rebound." It's the reason why you can look at a topographical map of Canada and see many huge, natural lakes. While if you look at a map of the U.S., you'll see the Great Lakes (most of them shared with Canada) and other smaller lakes only in the northern states. Virtually all other American lakes, except for lowland lakes close to the sea like Lake Ponchartrain, are artificially-created lakes.
After the retreat (actually melting) of the last huge ice sheets, areas of Wisconsin and Minnesota were covered with huge glacial lakes like Lake Agassiz. That lake and others like it are no more as the land rose emptying them. Huge amounts of Candadian water are still being emptied into the sea as the land rises. And that is one big reason why the sea is rising.

Beach erosion is caused by many things... we have beach erosion in Florida where I live... It has nothing to do with sea levels rising - my back yard ends at salt water. I watch. Tides ebb and flow but the level’s been the same for decades.
Do these fools think that there is some way to stack water locally?
Don’t try this at home, folks!
.
Not only that but tectonic plate motion will put the whole thing in the drink, at two +/- inches per year going that-a-way. The downside of that is that the eastern snivelers will be slowly forced west——will have to put strict border control in place at that point to keep the Kennedy clan out of my neighborhood.
As long as it is not Guam! Who was that leftist loon in Congress worried about the island capsizing?
2 millimeters! Crimney sakes, it takes 2.54 Centimeters, which to equal an inch.
I’d like to know how they measured the depth of the ocean. Did they stick their big toes in the surf and say, “The ocean is rising. The ocean is rising!”
did they measure during high tide or low tide? Did they measure during a full moon?
The earth doesn’t orbit the sun in a perfect circle, the ordit is egg shaped, and every 11,500 years, the earth is the furthest from the sun. Which accounts for the Little Ice Age and many other climate abberations.
“The researchers predicted that by 2100, sea levels in the hotspot would rise by between 20 and 29 centimetres above the global increase, which most oceanographers predict will be about one metre.”
