Reports: Turkish warplane shot down by Syria
MSNBC ^ | June 22, 2012

Posted on 06/22/2012 8:19:50 AM PDT by cunning_fish

Lebanon's Hezbollah-owned Al-Manar television station said on Friday that Syrian air defenses shot down a Turkish military aircraft, quoting Syrian security sources.

"Syrian security sources confirmed to a Manar correspondent in Damascus that Syrian defense forces shot down the Turkish fighter jet," a news flash on the Beirut-based station said.

Pro-Iranian Al-Mayadeen television station, which is based in Lebanon, also quoted what it said were Turkish sources as saying a jet had been shot down by Syrian air defenses.

There was no confirmation of either report. Earlier, Turkey -- a member of NATO -- said it had lost contact with a plane while it was over the sea off the southeastern coast, and a television station said it had crashed in Syrian territorial waters.

CNN Turk television said Turkey was in contact with the Syrian authorities to get permission to conduct a search for the airmen, although there was no immediate official confirmation.

In a statement, Turkey's military said a search and rescue operation was underway. It lost radar and radio contact with the plane after it took off from Erhac Airport in the eastern province of Malatya.

Two crew were aboard the F-4 at the time of the crash, the Turkish state news agency Anatolia said on its website, citing Malatya governor Ulvi Saran.

The Hurriyet daily newspaper reported that the plane had gone down in international waters and that the two airmen had been found alive and well following a search operation by Turkish forces.

The Chief of General Staff declined to comment further on the incident beyond the written statement.

Turkish warplanes regularly patrol along and off Turkey's southern Mediterranean coast.

At some point, people just appreciate order, which results in food for the starving.

Communists provided order and food for the starving, we all know how well that turned out.

“Turkey is a NATO ally, they could theoretically invoke the treaty.”
Well, as soon as it shot over Syrian waters it is hardly an attack against a NATO country.

http://www.nato.int/cps/en/natolive/official_texts_17120.htm

Article 5

The Parties agree that an armed attack against one or more of them in Europe or North America shall be considered an attack against them all and consequently they agree that, if such an armed attack occurs, each of them, in exercise of the right of individual or collective self-defence recognised by Article 51 of the Charter of the United Nations, will assist the Party or Parties so attacked by taking forthwith, individually and in concert with the other Parties, such action as it deems necessary, including the use of armed force, to restore and maintain the security of the North Atlantic area.

Any such armed attack and all measures taken as a result thereof shall immediately be reported to the Security Council. Such measures shall be terminated when the Security Council has taken the measures necessary to restore and maintain international peace and security .

Article 6

For the purpose of Article 5, an armed attack on one or more of the Parties is deemed to include an armed attack:

on the territory of any of the Parties in Europe or North America, on the Algerian Departments of France (2), on the territory of or on the Islands under the jurisdiction of any of the Parties in the North Atlantic area north of the Tropic of Cancer;

on the forces, vessels, or aircraft of any of the Parties, when in or over these territories or any other area in Europe in which occupation forces of any of the Parties were stationed on the date when the Treaty entered into force or the Mediterranean Sea or the North Atlantic area north of the Tropic of Cancer.

You are exactly correct. Syria is outside the territory specified in the NATO treaty; this does not justify using NATO forces.

I gotta go check! BRB!

Many different people have speculated on just who and where is Magog, or The Land of Gog.

Here is a 1687 map that shows Magog as being in modern day Mongolia / China..................

No no NO. . . I mean, I think it may be hugh two, but what makes it so innersting is that Ivan has been beefing up Syria for the last month. I’ve been waiting to find out why. If the Turkmen go banzai with Syria they may find they’ve done nothing but poke a stick at a big, surly Russian bear that is spoiling for a fight.

No. IF Assad goes down, then you get another muslum brotherhood spy base. Israel would REALLY be squeezed if that happened.

Turkey is now governed by the Islamist AKP. This is not the Turkey of Attaturk, who killed the last Caliphate, but of the Muslim Brotherhood allied Gullen movement, which seeks to restore it.

Trouble is, aren’t Syria, Russia, and Iran having the biggest war games ever this week? If so, things like this can happen, and sometimes wars start.

Not that I’m a war monger (though I’ve been accused of it before). I’m just curiouser and curiouser to figure out what Ivan’s game is.

There were some reports of this earlier in the week but I personally regard them as unconfirmed. Not saying that they’re not happening, just that I’m not sure. In those initial reports the chicoms were said to be playing as well.

Best as I can tell this is sunni vs. shiite with ivan and iran ligning up on the shiite side while Europe and the US has thrown in with the sunnis.

Not sure there are any good guys here.

I personally regard the "giant Russian/Chinese/Syrian/Iranian" exercise reports as utterly false garbage, not just "unconfirmed."

The "report" (any other "reports" were just regurgitating the original nonsense) were from an previously-proven completely unreliable source (a semi-official Iranian news agency), described things that were pretty much operationally impossible, used terminology indicating a lack of knowledge of military matters, and of course they have all been denied by all governments mentioned.

The only reason people gave them credence was that 1) If it was true, it was exciting and scary and 2) it allowed people to indulge whatever their favorite End Times fantasy was.
