Transgendered Athlete Vies for Spot on Olympic Team

Keelin Godsey, 28, was born a woman but identifies as a man. The 5'9", 186-pound hammer thrower is competing in the women's Olympic trials today in Eugene, Oregon; if he makes it onto the team, he'll be the first transgendered American athlete to go to the Olympic games. "I take a lot of pride in the fact that I have a good amount of muscle mass, and I've done it naturally," Godsey told Sports Illustrated. "But in some ways, this is the last body I would ever want."

Godsey grew up as "Kelly," in Parker, Colorado, and excelled in basketball, softball, soccer, and track.

Ok, so it wasn't enough with Caster Semenya who, at least always claimed to be a female. Now we have a "have-it-my-way" who wants to be considered a man when it suits her and a female at other times! Besides, what are the chances she is not taking hormones? Oh, I forgot, she said she isn't... am I supposed to believe it? If she lives openly as a man, she should compete as a man or change her mind about the "man" business, because she really ain't one!

This may be interesting to watch, since the Olypic Committee has been known to perform something that resolves the issue, and everyone else fails to do... and that would be genetic testing. You can rewire the plumbing but the original blueprints are already on file.

Does “she” menstruate? No? Then she’s not a woman.

Uhhh... don't they use a lot of hormones to "transgender" somebody?

I thought that was cheating?

Or does that only apply to Lance Armstrong and Roger Clemens?

She was born a woman and still is. She just wants to pick and choose when she calls herself one. The best part is, she still can’t beat the other girls.

We used to joke about the USSR doing this. Were they ahead of their time or are we on a glide path for the same fate they underwent?

Your comment hits at the heart of the matter. Every one of these people who considers themselves to be “special” ignores the fact that by competing as a woman, he/she is cheating every female athlete on the field.

The last I read about the topic, a couple of days ago, was that the International Olympic Committee was soon expected to announce new policies regarding sex verification. OTOH, the International Association of Athletics Federations has ruled that a female who is recognized as a female in law will be eligible to compete in women's competitions provided that she has androgen levels below the male range.

I miss the days when boys were boys, girls were girls, and the Russian female athletes were just ugly! LOL

This may come as a shock to you, you may have been smoking behind the bleachers or something - but after menopause sometime in their late 40s or early 50s normal women stop having their periods. They still remain women.

Okay, I'm really confused (not as confused as Keelin Godsey, but ...), she "identifies" as a man; but, she is going to compete as a woman. If she truly is a "man", shouldn't she/he/it be competing with other men.

Of course, since "she" has the muscles of a woman, trying to compete with men is not a successful venture, so, she competes with women. Sigh! Make up your mind. You want everyone to recognize you as "transgendered", then be "transgendered". Don't go back and forth for when it is or is not convenient.

Wow, I have read something as ridiculous as this once referring to women bleeding once a month as being analogous to gay men bleeding from their ass. A woman bleeding once a month is healthy; a man bleeding from his ass is not.

A woman who goes thru menopause cannot in any way be compared to someone taking male hormones to change their appearance. Again, the first is part of the health cycle of a normal woman; the second is pharmacy interfering with a normal process. When you take a DNA blood test of a woman before and after menopause, you get the same result. Some man, taking hormones to make himself look more like a woman, when having a DNA blood test done, will come back male no matter what.

These people are confused and it is sad that we try to deal with them on such a superficial level. Changing their looks, does not change their sex and it doesn't really help with their problems.

it’s the hormones that should disqualify her/him. To become a “man” you have to inject huge amounts of male hormones in the person.

The Russians used to place these women full of male hormones into their teams: that’s why they now rely on DNA tests and drug screens.

There are younger women who don’t menstruate either, for whatever reason.

I have a technical mathmatics book that my grandfather used when he worked at G.E.; There was something about ‘mensuration’,whch I believe has to do with measurement. At first I thought it said “menstruation”,LOL.

I was like,”what the hell?”
