California officials responsible for the state's electric grid are scrambling to avoid blackouts in southern California this summer following news that a major nuclear power plant will be offline indefinitely.
The effort to avoid a repeat of the costly power outages that plagued the state in 2000 and 2001 includes bringing old plants back online, commissioning new transmission lines and activating a multipronged emergency response system to cut power demand at peak times.
"We're not forecasting blackouts, but during very hot periods, either a very hot day or an extended heat wave, there are going to be challenges in southern California," said Steven Greenlee, a spokesman for the California Independent System Operator (CAISO), which manages the power grid that serves 30 million people.

To help fill the gap, California grid operators have called back into service two gas-fired units at an aging power plant in Huntington Beach that had been retired in January.
Or not, even the loony left coast will use old, dirty plants when they actually need power.
Al Gore and the other rich liberals probably have their own diesel generators.
We don’t need to have power plants. Electricity is created “somewhere else” at no cost and in limitless quantities. Then is just “appears” in your electrical outlets!
Just ask any California liberal, they know it is true. So say their policies.
Yep...welcome to the United States of Mexico. That’s where we’re heading under libtard leadership.
Well hell, just build a windmill.
Problem solved.
Wasn’t this a major reason why Gov. Gray Davis was recalled?
I wouldn’t be surprised if wheeled power from nearby states cost 150 percent of Cal power.
Boo hoo.
Federal judges will be ignored this time around, we are used to doing that now.
Dear California:
Please build some more power plants in your state.
Thank you.
Your friend and neighbor,
- Arizona
It's like the Roman aquaducts spewing water.
And they're still voting for the same politicians who destroyed the once-Golden State.
FOOLS!
Natural gas, diesel is just too smellly ................
Blackouts before Coal!! If a liberal is to have any principle then they should huddle in the darkness and wonder in amazement as states beyond have reliable electricity and they do not. As the utopia crumbles it may yet dawn on them.
Perhaps there’s a Freeper who knows what went wrong at San Onofre this past year. Not that there was danger to the public, but what was supposed to be a long term improvement failed. They replaced steam generators at great cost.
This is the primary cause of potential shortages this year. 2000 MW of local power production off line.
The steam tubes were failing/near failure. I would hazard either the metal used was faulty or the operation was beyond normal parameters. 22 months is way too short of a time for normal usage for a normal tube.
Rolling blackout, is this a new moniker for the KA electric car? Guess the pedal is off the rose for the ‘smart’ ones who went all electric.
Hold on a minute. I thought that Californut was celebrating the shutting down of an evil, dangerous, nasty, destructive NUCLEAR power plant. Isn’t this exactly what they have been demanding, even voting for?
The voters of that screwy state have been getting, not what they truly deserve, but that which they have been continuously and loudly DEMANDING. Now——STFU
FR needs a “like” button.
“I would hazard either the metal used was faulty...”
Pretty much, they used steel from China and SURPRISE! it wasn’t made to spec, seems the Chinese cut some corners to squeeze out a little more profit.
But on the positive side, when the power fails at night, they’ll actually be able to see the stars.
What can Brown do for you?
Brownouts.
Has Brown done anything to increase power supplies?
Fire the liberal “dirt-firsters” and your lights will come back on.
Not many leftists would understand that you can’t build a windmill using the power that a windmill produces...
however, that’s not what it’s about.
Windmills are for generating false righteousness,
not for generating electricity.
True, but they're also great for generating tax credits and subsidies....aka you and me paying for somebody else's folly.
The credits and subsidies exist because of folks’ desire for false righteousness.
And for the people that use the sheeperals’ need for righteousness without God,
“green” means MONEY to their cronies and donors.
It’s not the Gore types that we have to have feel the pain,
but those sheeperals that empower them.
Ain't that special.
California no longer has blackouts.
They now have "challenges."
And when the "necessarily skyrocketing" bills show up in the homeowners mail will they have a "participation trophy" embossed in the letterhead?
There is no cure for "progressive liberal" stupidity.
NONE.
.progressive liberal
Perhaps Governor Brown can discover a way to have his bullet train generate electricity.
I guess the solar powered high-speed rail job is about to go over the cliff. huh, Moonbeam?
and the wind whispered ENRONNnnnn
Yes Conrade, but there is still more to do. By end of the next Maobama Four Year Plan, we should have mass starvation, universal gun control and concentration camps. And ignore the knock on your door at 3:00 am, they are there to help you.
And still no libs see a problem with their demands for more plug-in electric cars.
So let me get this straight, one of the highest revenue generating states in the nation (if not “the” most?) can’t keep the lights on?
When do you think they maybe, just maybe, have a problem?
That nails it perfectly!
The generators were made in NKorea.
scramble, scramble, sweat, sweat.
How’s that green power ship working out for y’all now?
toughsky-shitskey huh?
Having experienced some of this Chinese "steel" I've come to the conclusion that the word "steel" just does not translate properly into Chinese. That have some stuff they call "steel", but it isn't.
Davis' major blunder was trying to give driver's licenses to illegal aliens.
