(CBS News) New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg shrugged off criticism of his controversial public health initiatives, saying that "if government's purpose isn't to improve the health and longevity of its citizens, I don't know what its purpose is."
Bloomberg most recently put forth a plan to ban the sale of sugary drinks larger than 16 ounces from the city's eateries, street carts and stadiums.
The proposal has been sharply criticized, in some cases by beverage and fast food companies as a case of government overreach.
He's also been criticized for previous efforts to, among other things, ban smoking in public places and the use of trans-fats in restaurant foods. Some have gone so far as to mock has as being like a "nanny."
But on "CBS This Morning," Bloomberg fired back, saying, "We're not here to tell anybody what to do. But we certainly have an obligation to tell them what's the best science and best medicine says is in their interest.
"If you want to smoke, I think it's pretty ridiculous, you shouldn't. But I don't think we should take away your right to smoke."
Bloomberg pointed out that life expectancy iin New York City exceeds the national average by three years, noting that all the progress has come since he took office a decade ago.

The Constitution has zero relevance to this man.
I applaud the fact that Mayor Bloomie realizes NYCers aren’t smart enough to make intelligent food/health choices.
Now if we can just get him to prevent those same folks from voting in elections for federal offices.
No, Mike, you don't.
...then STFU moron
Well he admits he doesn’t know what the purpose of govt is.
Who taught this loon civics?
I thought it was to protect the rights of the citizens and provide for the common defense. What do I know...
He’s hopeless. Give him the “Mussolini” farewell.
This is the most ignorant statement I’ve ever heard from the lips of a prominent politician, closely followed by Biden’s “FDR on TV in 1929” statement.
Government/politicians are in no position to promote the best science and best medicine even if they do know what it is, which is doubtful. The globull warming fiasco should prove that.
And Bloomie twists this by construing “rights” as “entitlements.” It’s one of the many, many ways in which supposedly free handed liberalism becomes a far tighter squeeze on the person than conservatism ever could be.
Those people elected him, they deserve him.
“if government’s purpose isn’t to improve the health and longevity of its citizens, I don’t know what its purpose is.”
I agree, Bloomie. You don’t know the purpose of government, you ststist jackass!
The freedom to imprison themselves in liberal lunacy, I supposed. Sigh... I thought constitutions were supposed to put a sharp limit on this sort of thing.

FUMB
You’re exactly right, I fear the do gooders far more that any conservative government! and I’m really starting to hate the feds. Totally out of control.
We're not here to tell anybody what to do. But we certainly have an obligation to tell them what's the best science and best medicine says is in their interest.
This will come as a shock to you but people really can decide what is in their own best interests. It's called Freedom.
Oh, and another thing. It is one thing for you to tell people what you think is best for them but what you are doing is forcing them to abide by what you think is best. That's called totalitarianism.
Where is it written that a mayor has the power to tell people what they can eat or drink? Bloomberg is a delusional power hungry egotist that needs to be replaced.
He has no idea what freedom means. Government’s role is to leave people alone.
the only obligation this idiot has is to stay out of peoples lives
Bloomberg is a Maosist.
I therefore propose FR Rule # 2:
Always refer to Bloomberg as Chairman Bloomberg.
He doesn’t even mean what he portrays himself as saying. He’d stick “surgeon general” warnings or some such thing on the giant cups of soda if he was being honest, even if he was wrong in the warnings. But he goes further: shoot, skip the warnings, just BAN the darn stuff. And NYC takes it meekly as a mouse. Maybe it’s too declasse for New Yawkers to quaff giant cups of soda and it’s a stealth way of being delicate.
Yeah, where is that emanation of a penumbra here? Can’t tell a woman not to have even a viable unborn baby offed, but can tell her not to get a Double Gulp? Consistency isn’t liberals’ forte.
Headline: “Bloomberg admits he does not know the purpose of government”.
NY fatties will have to sew a golden hamburger identification on all their clothes and present zee papers at the city limits.
Let me give you a hint. The role of a city government is to maintain public infrastructure, provide police/fire/public safety services, etc. That's about it.
Well, the Tea Party folks have been kvetching for a long time about getting RINOs, but have been unable to get much of a foot in the door (case in point: Mitt Romney, who to be fair probably would never ban Double Gulps). Here’s your chance, Tea Party! The Double Gulp Tea Party candidate, running against Bloomie!
Maybe Bloomberg should spend his time checking out fancy restaurants - the kind he and his social group eat at - then he can tell HIS friends what they should and shouldn't eat. He needs to share is 'luv' of telling others what's good for them... /s
There’s nothing, absolutely nothing wrong with private do gooders who do good with their own dimes. May their tribe increase as much as they please. They can preach that Double Gulps will damn you to hell, if they want. They can require swearing off Double Gulps in order to belong to their private clubs. But they doggone well do NOT have a right to twist the levers of government to keep their neighbors from getting Double Gulps.
You know what’s happening here, don’t ya’? Follow the $$$$$. He’s implemented NO SMOKING bans throughout the city and they are going to lose REVENUE. He’s trying to make it up in other ways. Want more to drink or eat? Buy 2 = more taxation.
OK. When will he be outlawing gay sex ?
2 + 2 = 5
“Can I make the little man fly now, Mother?”
listen stooopid... it's supposed to be the SERVANT OF THE PEOPLE!!! not their overlord
Romanian term limits.
I keep a list of Nanny State mandates on SCRIBD. It is there so I can reference files on my other computers. Who knew people would actually read this stuff.
Anyway, here is the link: http://www.scribd.com/doc/87219158/My-List-of-Nanny-State
Spoken like a true socialist, bloomberg. If the idiots in NYC voted for this clown, they deserve the treatment they get from him.
O.K., Nanny. We're agreed: you don't know what the purpose of government is.
Beyond that, if you are dead-set on improving the health and longevity of New York's citizens, consider this: homosexuality and its associated practices reduce life expectancy by more years than do both smoking and obesity.
I'm sure you'll get right on it.
I would have to agree with Mayor Blooming Idiot that anyone living in NYC (or any other major city) voluntarily does not have the mental capacity to make serious life decisions. Those citizens will make perfect FEMA Camp inmates (or sheeple).
But that's what you're doing. Chairman Bloomberg. Life, LIBERTY and the pursuit of happiness. Look it up.
Exactly. Finally, Bloomberg admits that he doesn't know the purpose of government.
Maybe he should read the founding documents to find out. Those documents explain it better than all the blathering leftist doggerel taught in all the schools and spread in all the newsrooms across this sadly disintegrating nation.
I quote Colonel Potter: Mule-cookies!
The problem is his ban is stupid and to come even close to having a desired effect it would have to be truly draconian. Sure he can pass these stupid laws but it doesn’t make them effective or wise. Individuals can make bad decisions but in the grand scheme of things even totally modifying ones diet to a very strict regime offers no guarantees. If you don’t have the genes for longevity you probably are doomed. The numbers are not nearly as clear as some of these health Nazis like to make believe. Sure its good to maintain a healthy weight and have regular exercise but how good is life if you can’t choose to indulge its pleasures?
Also this illustrates the big danger of getting the govt more involved with providing health care because then it becomes an open ended justification to do even more of this kind of bs and soon individual liberty becomes a thing of the past.
Yes, Lazamataz is right. Bloomberg must be psychotic. He claims he doesn’t want to ban stuff, but cheerfully imposes restrictions on use and amounts of these things.
Nanny State PING!
