Gallup: More people still blame Bush for poor economy than Obama

I keep waiting for these numbers to start moving.

Annnnnny day now.

Quinnipiac’s polled this question repeatedly and their numbers are strikingly static too:

I’ve always assumed that the flatness of this data is due to people reserving judgment on O’s economic record for as long as they can. They like him personally and want to give him the benefit of the doubt so they’re waiting to see if he might yet still have a few bonanza jobs reports up his sleeve. But now I don’t know. The May jobs report was so awful and the prognosis for the rest of the year so grim that I figured we’d see some movement in this metric this time. Nope.

You’re right, the Democrat congress and Bush pushed financial reform, unqualified homeowners, and unending stimulus.

You’re right, the Democrat congress and Bush pushed financial reform, unqualified homeowners, and unending stimulus. Of course, so does Obama, but on a larger scale.

Yes

I’m struck how when the conservatives gave the congress to democrats in 2006 that president bush folded on Iraq and pulled out.

I’m also struck how in TARP he spent all of the funds allocated and did not require the funds to be paid back.

I’m also struck that like LBJ he quit and refused to run for a second term.

I am also embarrassed that when more than 200 marines were slaughtered in Beirut he refused to fight a war on terror and just pulled out of conflicts.

Oh wait. . ..

You bet. Bush was an absolute disaster.

I noice none of the examples you cited were of Bush defending himself.

That’s understandable, as I know his record fairly well.

He ran for a second term

He renewed and escalated the WOT

I guess you and many others weren’t paying as close attention as you thought.

Bush advocated increased regulation of the GSEs at least six times.

The housing collapse happened in 2007 after the democratic landslide.

The bush = obama meme is the same thing as supporting Obama and ant conservative radicals.

BTW, Bush gave this speech just several years prior to the housing collapse.

These are Bush’s own words, not mine.

Bush, in his 2002 mortgage speech, just a few years prior to the housing collapse: _________________________________________________________ """We have a problem here in America because fewer than half the Hispanics and African Americans own their own homes.

That’s a home ownership gap; a gap that we got to work together to close. And by the end of this decade we’ll increase the number of minority homeowners by 5.5 million families. “

“One of the major obstacles to minority home-ownership is financing. Fannie Mae and Freddy Mac have committed to provide more money for lenders, they committed to meet the shortage of capital available for minority home-buyers.

Freddie Mac just began 25 initiatives around the country to dismantle barriers (like income requirements) and create better opportunities for home-ownership.

One of the programs is designed to help families with bad credit histories to qualify for home ownership loans (by faking their income) . You don’t have to have a lousy home for first time home-buyers.

You put your mind to it the first time low income home buyer can have just as nice a house as anyone else (till those adjustable rates go up)."""

National Homeownership Month, 2003

By the President GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America

________________________________________________________

A Proclamation

Homeownership is more than just a symbol of the American Dream; it is an important part of our way of life. Core American values of individuality, thrift, responsibility, and self-reliance are embodied in homeownership. I am committed to helping more families know the security and sense of pride that comes with owning a home. The Department of Housing and Urban Development is leading an Administration-wide effort to bring new tools and resources to would-be homeowners.

We are providing financial assistance to qualified families through the American Dream Downpayment Fund, funding educational programs that stress financial literacy, and offering a compassionate hand to those who dream of moving from subsidized housing into homeownership.

And through the Self-Help Homeownership Opportunity Program, my Administration partners with nonprofit organizations that offer homeownership opportunities to families willing to contribute their skills and labor to help build a home of their own. We are also proposing ways to make it easier to shop for a mortgage and to make mortgages available to more families through the Federal Housing Administration.

Today, the United States is fortunate in that our homeownership rate is at an all-time high, and low interest rates continue to encourage millions of Americans to become first-time homeowners. Although a record number of Americans own their own homes, we continue to see a gap between the homeownership rates of minorities and nonminorities. By a significant margin, minority families are less likely to own their own homes.

Therefore, I have called upon the entire housing industry to join with my Administration to expand minority homeownership across the Nation. Our goal is to help at least 5.5 million minority families become homeowners by the end of this decade, and our Blueprint for the American Dream Partnership is taking bold steps to make this a reality.

Across our Nation, every citizen, regardless of race, creed, color, or place of birth, should have the opportunity to become a homeowner. Homeownership represents a pathway to pride and prosperity for many families, encourages values of responsibility and sacrifice, creates stability for neighborhoods and communities, and generates economic growth that helps strengthen the entire Nation.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America

Oh we were paying attention alright. That’s why I’ve said what I said.

We noticed that he never defended himself, and even more importantly, he never defended those young men in the military when they came under attack in the press and from Congress.

He sent them to the military actions you listed, and when they did their duty and were unfairly, and in some cases unlawfully, charged with all sorts of ‘war crimes’ GWB turned his back on them and left them to twist in the wind. Not a word in their defense. What a Commander in Chief he turned out to be.

Expanding Homeownership Opportunities for All Americans

Today’s Presidential Action

Today, President Bush signed into law the American Dream Downpayment Act of 2003, which will help approximately 40,000 families a year with their down payment and closing costs, and further strengthen America’s housing market. This legislation complements the President’s aggressive housing agenda announced in 2002 to dismantle the barriers to homeownership. Today, the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the Census Bureau released data showing that new home construction in November reached its highest level in nearly 20 years. Overall housing starts rose 4.5 percent from October and rose 17.6 percent from November of 2002. Single-family housing starts totaled 1,695,000 (SAAR) in November, up 3.3 percent from October and up 20.8 percent from November 2002 — a record for single-family starts. The strong housing market is beneficial for communities across the Nation. America’s families have been refinancing due to the lowest mortgage rates in 45 years, saving hundreds of dollars a month on their home payments. The U.S. homeownership rate was 68.4% in the third quarter?its highest level ever.

Background on Today’s Presidential Action

The biggest barrier to homeownership is often accumulating funds for a down payment. In June 2002, President Bush proposed the American Dream Downpayment Fund to help low-income families take much-needed steps to own a home of their own, and announced the goal of increasing the number of minority homeowners by at least 5.5 million before the end of the decade. President Bush’s aggressive housing agenda to dismantle the barriers to homeownership includes providing down payment assistance through the American Dream Downpayment Fund; increasing the supply of affordable homes through the Single-Family Affordable Housing Tax Credit; increasing support for self-help homeownership programs like Habitat for Humanity; simplifying the home-buying process; and increasing home-buying education.

Dismantling the Barriers to Homeownership President Bush issued America’s Homeownership Challenge to the real estate and mortgage finance industries to encourage them to join the effort to close the gap that exists between the homeownership rates of minorities and non-minorities. The Bush Administration and the America’s Homeownership Challenge partners in the private sector are working hard to increase minority homeownership, and are seeing positive results:

There are more than 1 million new minority homeowners in the U.S. since the President’s announcement 18 months ago. Nearly 1,500 low-income families are now using housing vouchers to pay their monthly mortgage or other costs of owning a home, and HUD is working with public housing authorities to allow the sale of some units to tenants. The Federal Trade Commission and HUD are working together to protect homebuyers from predatory lenders. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation is continuing to implement the Money Smart program, which is providing financial education services for potential homebuyers. Through America’s Homeownership Challenge, more than 2 dozen companies have made commitments to increase minority homeownership, including pledges to provide more than $1.1 trillion in mortgage purchases for minority homebuyers this decade. The Bush Administration has begun the final stage of its effort to reduce closing costs, simplify the settlement paperwork, and eliminate surprise closing costs for American homebuyers by reforming the rules governing the Real Estate Settlement Procedures Act.

Strengthening Economic Activity

According to an analysis released in 2002 by HUD, meeting the President’s goal to close the housing gap will involve $256 billion in economic activity in the form of construction and remodeling jobs, spending on household goods, and other benefits. Because of rising home values, Americans are enjoying more than $2.5 trillion of greater housing wealth than they did at the beginning of 2001.

What do we expect, when we don't stand up for ourselves. The public never hears that it was the dems in Congress that were responsible to oversee Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. It was them that refused to regulate them. It was the Bush administration that sent people to Congress repeatedly to implore them to do something about them. Even Greenspan warned them to reign in FM and FM and they would have nothing to do with it. Much of the blame for the economic downfall can be blamed on the housing market and the blame for that lies with the dems.

In the mean time the public doesn't hear hardly a word about the responsibility the dems have for the downfall and a constant refrain about Bush, Bush, Bush. We have plenty of ammo but refuse to use it. Our ammo is the truth and we let it lay in the ash heaps of forgotten history. We need to reverse this trend and let the public have the truth.

Let's get this info out to the Public big time!!!

of all the things GWB did, not defending himself was the most damaging.

He shouldn't have needed to defend himself. We, Conservatives, should have had his back. That being said, Conservatives have been notoriously lacking in the PR department for years and years. Conservatives often have been busy just being and forgetting that perception in the realm of politics can often have more weight than reality. This is especially true when you have an evil opposition whose main talent, besides destroying our Country, is the smoke and mirrors of a constant stream of deception.

This passed in 2003. The bubble popped in 2007 after Fannie Mae paid senator Obama Dodd and house member frank to deregulate the lending process further.

Anti conservatives are more loyal to their cause than ours.

This bill did not cause the crisis. GSEs did cause it.

Come on buddy....Just a few years prior to the housing collapse, Bush, the head of the Federal Government, was pushing for home loans for all....Making speeches for low income, totally unqualified people, making multiple attempts to streamline no down or little down payments for home loans etc.

This whole thing came down on his watch...No?

Ya think there is no correlation here, from the same guy that attempted to push amnesty down our throats.

In Bush’s own words:

It is amazing you and so many are willing to persist in this argument. It is a pro Obama and anti conservative argument.

Bush and his appointed officials made exactly your arguments from 2003 onward regarding housing.

But rather than admit that or worse still actually join them in advocating these arguments against the democrats you choose to join Obama and the democrats in saying bush did it.

It is why conservatives can’t win. Your arguments are Obama re election arguments. They are reasons Barney frank should not retire but return to the House reelection this fall.

Obama and the democrats receive some of their most key support here. Standing back in silent indifference might make some sort of sense but once alerted that conservatives such as bush did make these arguments conservatives ought to join in support of bush.

That is why reagan is great. Conservatives stuck with him DESPITE massive contradictory actions that undermined conservatives.

Examples are: Reagan did amnesty; Sandra day o Connor ; folding and withdrawing from Beirut.

The issue is the willingness to defend fellow conservatives.

Since you seem to like YouTube take 5 minutes to see a review of repeated bush administration arguments from 2003 onward seeking to prevent a housing collapse:

Cheer for the home team.

Bush was more conservative than Reagan.

Try responding to the arguments made. I know bush argued for increased home ownership.

Bush also argued for regulating GSEs.

Home ownership is not bad.
