UW [Univ. of Wisconsin] System regents approve a 5.5% tuition hike
Journal Sentinel Online ^ | 07 June 2010 | Karen Herzog

As two students silently held strongly worded signs in a cordoned-off "protest area" at the back of the room, the University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents on Thursday raised tuition by 5.5% at all campuses for the 2012-'13 academic year to help offset state budget cuts.

"Tuition has doubled in the past 10 years," one student's protest sign read. "Greed is a bottomless pit," another said.

The 17-1 vote, with Regent John Drew of Milwaukee opposing, followed a lengthy debate about whether further belt-tightening could occur instead of a 5.5% tuition increase for a sixth consecutive year.

"We're used to the word, 'tighten,' " new Regent Regina Millner of Madison said. "You can tighten by eliminating fat. At some point, you're eliminating muscle and then it's destructive to the organism."

Millner said the UW System ultimately must be streamlined to remain healthy.

"We need to be thinking about not just now, but looking forward, because increasing tuition every year is not something that is good for our state, our system or our students."

Regents ultimately decided to raise tuition to avoid "cutting into the muscle" of the state's universities and colleges, and the quality of education they provide.

While some families can afford to pay more to attend a UW school, many have lost jobs and health insurance, Whitburn said.

Per capita personal income in Wisconsin rose a total 5% from 2008-'11, while tuition at UW campuses rose a total 16.5% in the same time frame, he said.

The cost for one year at UW-Madison will be about $23,820, including tuition, fees, room and board, books, supplies and miscellaneous expenses. Tuition and fees alone will cost $10,379.

Looks like they voted on this while all the recall election hoopla was going on. Isn't this what the students wanted? Higher pay for public employees?

I don’t suppose that taking a look at the compensation packages of the staff is an option.....

If the Kollege Kiddies turn on their Marxist masters at the "colleges" and "universities", it's over for the communists. The commies might want to try to get a grip on their greed.

Well, if they learnt any math in high school they’d see that a 5.5% increase would only make tuition double in 13.09 years, an improvement I should think. And if the writer studied math in journalizm school at all she would be able to document that if it went up 5.5% for the last three years that would be about a 17.4% increase.

Cutting the fat what a laugh. They made headlines when they cut a triathlon class.

It had such good bonding...

They need to cut the fat with a chain saw.

It’s for the children. (I mean the spoiled brat, tenured so-called “professional” teachers.)

Libs really are children. They want everyone else to take care of them and think they’re smarter than they are, and believe they deserve to be taken care of at the expense of everyone else. They think they are so important the world can’t go on without them and therefore should never be able to be fired like the rest of us lower proletarian shmuck citizens. They don’t care if it becomes more difficult for you to pay for their expenses, they will still demand you take care of them, even if you are out of work.

Yeah but THEY didn’t want to pay it, they wanted everyone else in the state NOT going to their university to pay it for them.

These “students” are going to be living (unemployed in their field of study) in the basement or their childhood homes for the rest of their lives.

They might as well avoid the expense of college, and trying to support themselves in the obama economy.

If they can life frugally in mom and dad's basement, the wages from flipping burgers may sustain them until the country realizes that socialism does not work.

Muscle? There isn’t much muscle in academia - either physical or mental, unless they’re referring to the mafia like cabal of government schooling, testing services and the university system - all draining hard earned capital in exchange for a sheet of paper.

I suspect that math is intentionally not taught well. This then compounds the problem going forward - pun intended, but it isn’t funny.

Wisconsin tuition is up ping

FReep Mail me if you want on, or off, this Wisconsin interest ping list.

The interesting twist to this story is that Obama refused to come to WI to help Barrett (after Obama PERSONNALLY prevailed upon Barrett to run against Walker). While Obama was in MN and IL railing against colleges raising tuition during a recession, the UW Board of Regents voted to hike the UW tuition 5%.
