The slogans of both campaigns are simple: "Putting Jobs First" for Mitt Romney, "Forward" for President Obama.
But when it comes to the core message that each candidate is trying to get across in TV ads and campaign appearances, Romney has boiled it down to a simple argument. Obama has not.
As the president himself readily acknowledges, the simplicity of his Republican challenger's case lends itself to easy persuasion.
Obama's counter-argument is layered with nuance and complexity.
It starts with an attempt to undercut Romney. As a corporate buyout executive, Romney shipped jobs overseas and reaped millions of dollars in fees from takeover deals that destroyed U.S. factory jobs, the Obama campaign says.
Turning to his own record, Obama tells voters that he inherited an economy on the brink of collapse and averted a depression. He takes credit for a resurgence in manufacturing, the rescue of the automobile industry and the creation of more than 4 million jobs since February 2010.
Obama also slams Republicans in Congress for blocking his plans to stimulate more jobs.
The messages you can run on have to reflect reality," said John G. Geer, author of "In Defense of Negativity: Attack Ads in Presidential Campaigns." "Obama can't run on 'Morning in America.' So he has to go to a more complicated argument."

Complex = Things are getting so much better because of our policies. At the same time, things still stink because of my predecessor’s policies.
That’s not a hard argument to make, it is an impossible argument to make....mainly because neither are true.
0 has distinct disadvantages this time around: he has a record that people can access, and what has happened to the country is not his opponent’s fault.
I love creative math.
4 million jobs created
8 million jobs lost
Net = 4 million jobs created. (or saved)
We really should have a letter writing campaign to Obama’s syncophants telling them they are either morons or supporters.
Complex? There’s nothing complex about taxing us into oblivion, ramming centrally planned death care down our throats, mainlining homos, a totally out-of-control EPA that is shutting down all fossil fuel energy, non-stop anti-business screeds and screetches, failure to defend our allies, and total incompetence.
It’s just a hard sell to the public.
“complex” or “with nuances” is what liberals always say when someone is too dumb to understand why Obama doesn’t totally suck.

Has this LA Times idiot ever pointed out that “Hope and Change” was pretty simplistic? How about “Blame Bush”?
Cannot be more bizzare than that.
translation: The voters are just too damned stupid to realize how utterly brilliant I am.
How complex and nuanced is “conservatives are stupid”?
The bigger the lie, the harder it is to tell. Even though Obama wouldn’t know the truth if slapped his effeminate head, the lie he is faced with now is beyond his competence to execute. He has become too dependent on his teleprompters while the coke worked its toll on his brain.
Nuanced = “You can’t really understand it because you’re looking at facts - we understand the concept and it’s brilliant.”
Complex = I’ve acted perfectly and the poor results are not my fault.
