A woman who was given a $2.1million tax refund after filing a false claim went on a massive spending spree until she was caught.

Krystle Marie Reyes was only caught after she reported the Visa card containing the seven figure sum had been lost.

By that time she had already spent more than $150,000, including buying a car and other household items.

The 25-year-old from Salem, Oregon, had used Turbo Tax to file her income tax return for 2011.

She claimed earnings of $3million but used the tax calculator programme to claim a refund of $2.1million, Oregon Live reported.

Due to the size of the refund, her electronic claims was examined by several people within the Oregon Revenue Department.

I shudder to think of the rampant fraud going on with this current tax system.

There’s got to be a better way. Our representatives in government - at virtually every level - continue to fail us at essentially every turn.

It's amazing that the IRS didn't have a flag for refunds over a million dollars.
It was the Oregon Revenue Department, not IRS ... but your question is still valid.
In fact, any return requesting a refund over $50K ought to be thoroughly audited.

For $2.1 Million, I could have disapeared entirely. New identity, out of the country, laundered the money and been off the grid and LONG gone.

My point, exactly.

Somebody with that much money has accountants taking care of these things.

She’s got $2.1 million, and buys a used minivan.

I tried to put a new car on a credit card and the dealer refused. He took my check instead. The amount was around $20,000 after trade in.

I wanted the points but he didn't want to pay the Visa charge he would incur. I believe it might be difficult to find anyone who would let you charge that kind of money.

The woman made a cash advance on her visa to get the used one, I don't know if she could have gotten a large enough cash advance to get a new one.

The beauty of her scheme is that she may serve two years for the crime and she will be ordered to repay the $150,000 but good luck to anyone trying to collect it. No way she would have ever earned that much money in two years. She had a fun time while it lasted, now it's time to pay the piper.

She should have immediately hopped on a plane and headed for a non extradition treaty destination....

Reyes, according to an arrest affidavit, paid $2,000 in cash for a 1999 Dodge Caravan and used the card to buy $800 worth of tires and wheels.

If I were going to steal a couple of million bucks, I think I'd look more to Jon Corzine's or the Kardashians spending habits for inspiration than to my neighbors at the trailer park who have jobs. Then again, I'd never want to steal a couple of million bucks.

I’ve seen images of murderers with the same type of eyes.

Cold and empty.

After all these stories about fraud with taxes (especially the illegals and non-existent children) I am starting to think of myself as a fool for being so honest about taxes.

If it’s so easy and nobody ever seems to get caught, and if cheating on taxes qualifies you to serve in federal government at the highest levels, WTF am I doing?

There’s the real story. None of these people should have jobs this morning.

How many people are claiming bogus $5000-$50000 refunds and getting them? I have a feeling this dumb looking woman got this idea from others who do it on a more modest scale each year

Krystle Marie Reyes was only caught after she reported the Visa card containing the seven figure sum had been lost.

My question is, how would you lose this card?

***My BIL defines these people as the kind that would win Lotto and BUY a trailer at the park.***

We had a similar incident years ago in which a real poor man living in a single wide trailer was hired at our high pay plant.

After still living for several years like a person in a trailer park one of the men explained to him that with his pay he could now afford to buy a decent foundation built house.

His response....”I guess I will look into a double wide then!”

I remember reading a story in the 1990’s, shortly after the Georgia state lottery was started, about a man who lived in a run-down trailer and won a million dollars. When asked what he was going to do with the money, he said, “I’m going to get a double-wide!”
