A woman who was given a $2.1million tax refund after filing a false claim went on a massive spending spree until she was caught.
Krystle Marie Reyes was only caught after she reported the Visa card containing the seven figure sum had been lost.
By that time she had already spent more than $150,000, including buying a car and other household items.
The 25-year-old from Salem, Oregon, had used Turbo Tax to file her income tax return for 2011.
She claimed earnings of $3million but used the tax calculator programme to claim a refund of $2.1million, Oregon Live reported.
Due to the size of the refund, her electronic claims was examined by several people within the Oregon Revenue Department.

She's very guilty!
She’s obviously qualified to be Secretary of the Treasury.
hmmmm....wonder if she was “supposed” to turn that card over to a certain Presidential campaign....
funny how this appears in an overseas paper.....
She can always call Tim Geithner as a witness in her trial
Reyes, according to an arrest affidavit, paid $2,000 in cash for a 1999 Dodge Caravan and used the card to buy $800 worth of tires and wheels.
I never really understood the IRS practice of issuing a refund first and examining the return after.
Oh, she’s guilty! Guilty!
Because the economy can be stimulated then, and the money gotten back after the fact... It’s how the world works, don’tcha know?
She has dead eyes.
The Daily Mail...covering the US news the US media ‘overlooks’...
Sounds like a state refund. I am sure the left coast papers will be all over this.
Wait wait wait...
$2000 cash for a MINIVAN? Then $800 for tires and “feet.”
She’s got $2.1 million, and buys a used minivan.
Wow... I’m... I mean, was she trying to be “discreet” with her money?

She uses TurboTax to file. Oregon uses an abacus to check the return and issues the refund.
It's amazing that the IRS didn't have a flag for refunds over a million dollars. I doubt that very many legitimate million dollar refunds go out. Anybody with that much money would be very unlikely to overpay.
Besides why would you give the government in essence an interest-free loan of a million dollars?
I shudder to think of the rampant fraud going on with this current tax system.
There’s got to be a better way. Our representatives in government - at virtually every level - continue to fail us at essentially every turn.
For $2.1 Million, I could have disapeared entirely. New identity, out of the country, laundered the money and been off the grid and LONG gone.
Somebody with that much money has accountants taking care of these things.
I tried to put a new car on a credit card and the dealer refused. He took my check instead. The amount was around $20,000 after trade in.
I wanted the points but he didn't want to pay the Visa charge he would incur. I believe it might be difficult to find anyone who would let you charge that kind of money.
The woman made a cash advance on her visa to get the used one, I don't know if she could have gotten a large enough cash advance to get a new one.
The beauty of her scheme is that she may serve two years for the crime and she will be ordered to repay the $150,000 but good luck to anyone trying to collect it. No way she would have ever earned that much money in two years. She had a fun time while it lasted, now it's time to pay the piper.
She should have immediately hopped on a plane and headed for a non extradition treaty destination....
If I were going to steal a couple of million bucks, I think I'd look more to Jon Corzine's or the Kardashians spending habits for inspiration than to my neighbors at the trailer park who have jobs. Then again, I'd never want to steal a couple of million bucks.
What a lovely lady....
:-/
Maybe she watched Goodfellas.
She sure does. They’re creepy.
I’ve seen images of murderers with the same type of eyes.
Cold and empty.
I’ve been living and filing in the wrong state.
I bet she is one of the 99%.
After all these stories about fraud with taxes (especially the illegals and non-existent children) I am starting to think of myself as a fool for being so honest about taxes.
If it’s so easy and nobody ever seems to get caught, and if cheating on taxes qualifies you to serve in federal government at the highest levels, WTF am I doing?

“Due to the size of the refund, her electronic claims was examined by several people within the Oregon Revenue Department.”
There’s the real story. None of these people should have jobs this morning.
How many people are claiming bogus $5000-$50000 refunds and getting them? I have a feeling this dumb looking woman got this idea from others who do it on a more modest scale each year
My question is, how would you lose this card?
Hey, if you happen to see
The most beautiful girl who walked out on me
Tell her I'm sorry
Tell her I need my bab - y
...Tell her, that I love her...
***My BIL defines these people as the kind that would win Lotto and BUY a trailer at the park.***
We had a similar incident years ago in which a real poor man living in a single wide trailer was hired at our high pay plant.
After still living for several years like a person in a trailer park one of the men explained to him that with his pay he could now afford to buy a decent foundation built house.
His response....”I guess I will look into a double wide then!”
I remember reading a story in the 1990’s, shortly after the Georgia state lottery was started, about a man who lived in a run-down trailer and won a million dollars. When asked what he was going to do with the money, he said, “I’m going to get a double-wide!”
Oregon ping...
And do we have a bunch of geniuses working at the Oregon Department of Revenue or what?!
It wasn't even the IRS that made this mistake, it was Oregon. Oregon gives out that sort of refund without the Governor's approval?
However, I would not steal from my fellow tax payers and normally a person that stupid would not have the brains to get out of dodge.
The trouble with people like this is they think they are stealing from the government, but there is no such thing as government money, only tax payers money and so if you get a large government check(or credit card)you don't deserve you have stolen it from me and all my fellow tax payers.
too stupid to even know how to spend money... And people like this votes count the same as yours and mine...
sigh
You needed a Black American-Express credit card!
I thought all Freepers had one. LOL/Sarc

” Interestingly, the myth predated the card. Doug Smith, director of American Express Europe, told snopes.com, “There had been rumors going around that we had this ultra-exclusive black card for elite customers. It wasn’t true, but we decided to capitalize on the idea anyway. So far we’ve had a customer buy a Bentley and another charter a jet.” (Yes, someone bought a Bentley — a car that costs between $200,000 and $400,000 — with a charge card!)”
“too stupid to even know how to spend money”
Yeah but she and her Turbo Tax were smarter than the Oregon revenuers - which is probably not saying much.
I do commend her frugality -1999 Dodge Caravan - lol
Asking as a non-Oregonian, could she have cashed in her credit card and set up a bank account - preferably in Switzerland?
......and more chins than chinatown.
I don’t understand how this could work. Wouldn’t $2.1 million dollars in taxes had to have been taken from a paycheck/ I didn’t know I could e-file my taxes and make up any amount I want.
But, if I did what this woman did, I’d be long gone. With that kind of money you could move to Mexico and pay the federales not to turn you in.
Dittos! and off to Panama, Brazil or Philippines they won’t find me
