Consumption driving 'unprecedented' environment damage: UN ('revving up' the climate for Rio Summit)

Population growth and unsustainable consumption are driving Earth towards "unprecedented" environmental destruction, the UN said in a report Wednesday ahead of the Rio Summit.

Of 90 key goals to protect the environment, only four have seen good progress, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) said in a planetary assessment issued only every five years.

"If current trends continue, if current patterns of production and consumption of natural resources prevail and cannot be reversed and 'decoupled,' then governments will preside over unprecedented levels of damage and degradation," said UNEP Executive Director Achim Steiner.

The phonebook-sized report, the fifth edition of the Global Environment Outlook (GEO), was issued ahead of the June 20-22 UN Conference on Sustainable Development -- the 20-year follow-up to the landmark Earth Summit, also in Rio.

Preceded by a series of forums gathering as many as 50,000 policymakers, business executives and activists, the summit aims at plotting a course for green development over the next two decades.

But the report warned of many challenges, painting a tableau of a planet whose resources were being stressed into the red zone.

Since 1950, the world's population has doubled to seven billion and is on course for around 9.3 billion by 2050 and some 10 billion by 2100.

Good grief. Nine identical replies.

Here's the deal: first hit "Post." Then look up at the row of browser tabs at the top of the page. Find the one that carries the label "Posting Comment."

When you find the "Posting Comment" tab, take a look and see if you can spot a little icon that looks like something spinning or swirling; if you see this spinning thingy, it means that your comment is winging its way to FR's computer, but FR's computer has not yet finished sending you your updated web page that shows your comments in the "If you posted your comment as-is, it would look like..." box, sometimes called the "Preview box" (or something similar).

As long as that little icon is spinning, don't hit the "Post" button again! If you do, you will cause your reply to be posted again. If you hit "Post" three times whilst the spinning thingy is there, we will all get to enjoy your words of wisdom three times.

Sometimes, FR's computer (often called a "server") will neglect to send a reply back to your browser. I don't know why this happens, but it does, once in a while.

You'll know this is the case if that little spinning thing keeps spinning and spinning for a minute or two. In this case, experience indicates that your reply actually has been posted, but FR's server loses track of things.

What I do in that case is refresh the original discussion thread page (you can do this by using your "back" key until you see the page in question and then hitting the "refresh" button to get FR's server to send you the latest version of the page) and check to see if my comment appears at the bottom of the page. Usually it does.

Gerald and Conrad are amused, but the King looks a little unhappy. `fraid you're on your own friend. Any old way, what a wonderful day.

The UN’s favored, multi-partisan, multinational constituents consume too much.

It is the members of the UN and its commissions who are the masters of Consumption and lavish living.

Get them out of the US and our environment will definitely improve very quickly.
