Blue skies would fade to hazy white if geoengineers inject light-scattering aerosols into the upper atmosphere to offset global warming. Critics have already warned that this might happen, but now the effect has been quantified.
Releasing sulphate aerosols high in the atmosphere should in theory reduce global temperatures by reflecting a small percentage of the incoming sunlight away from the Earth. However, the extra particles would also scatter more of the remaining light into the atmosphere. This would reduce by 20 per cent the amount of sunlight that takes a direct route to the ground, and it would increase levels of softer, diffuse scattered light, says Ben Kravitz of the Carnegie Institution for Science in Stanford, California.
That would have knock-on effects for life and human technology. The reduction in direct sunlight would impact the solar industry, which relies on direct sunlight to generate much of its power. But the increased indirect sunlight would boost photosynthesis beneath tree canopies. The most visible effect, though, would be above us.
The blue colour of the clear sky comes from light being scattering by molecules in the air. The scattering is much stronger for short blue wavelengths than for longer red wavelengths. Aerosol particles are much larger than molecules in the air, however, and they scatter red light more strongly, which washes out the blue light scattered by smaller molecules and makes the sky brighter and whiter.

These jerks haven’t the least idea what they are doing.
And if it turns out that we are entering a little ice age instead of global warming, and they manage to make things colder, then what are they going to do.
“Oh. Sorry. Give us another government grant and we’ll fix it. I’m not sure quite how we’ll get that stuff out of the stratosphere, but we’ll think of something! Just pay us more money and give us a few Nobel Prizes!”
Why don’t they just squirt a lot more ozone up there? Say, some high-flying drone aircraft to just lay down some very high-level sky-writing.
Probably a cheaper deal than this aerosol stuff they are talking about.
Sounds more plausible to me.

Scorching the sky? The phrase has never made sense to me. But maybe we'll do it by accident.
These people are certifiable. There’s no telling what trouble doing something so stupid on such a large scale would cause...
These people are demonstrably insane.
Then when this goes wrong and causes more global warming, or increased skin cancer, or increases the loss of global angular momentum to the solar wind, the solution will (of course) be "we must convert the United States to a socialist economy or the Solar System is doomed."
The glbal temperature may have gone up 1C over the last 100 years (short term) now lets see if we can lower it by 10C over a decade.
Ozone blocks significant amounts of UVR but insignificant amounts of IRR. It would not have the effect that you think it would.
Anyone attempting to alter the amount of sunlight reaching Earth should be stopped. Period.
Let’s see if I understand this correctly: global warming is caused by human activity and is bad, so we’re going to deliberately disperse sulphates in the upper atmosphere to reflect sunlight, and that’s good.
Well, if a racial spoils system is equality, then I guess this makes just as much logical sense.
I’m thinking, OMG, that imbecile in the White House could give it one imbecilic second’s thought and do it with an executive order! Talk about deer in the headlights. That’s us. And an imbecile is driving the damn car!
World Socialism: an answer in search of a question for over a century.
Oh, goody, maybe they can turn the sky into a sort of mirror and kill off half the world’s population in the process. (Obscure dystopian anime reference.)
The warming kooks may well find the way mankind can actually destroy the environment, and they will be the ones to do it.
We ARE.
First Estimate of Solar Cycle 25 Amplitude may be the smallest in over 300 years
These environmentalists are insane. They must be stopped using any means necessary.
I went to the zoo yesterday.
They have a rainforest exhibit...essentially it is a very fancy greenhouse, with a plexiglass roof. Lots of plants in there...and animals.
It reminded me that heat = life.
This is why the zoo does not have a barren glacier animal exhibit.
Even if the earth were warming, why would that be a bad thing?
That depends: How attached are you to coastal cities?
If they attack the atmosphere of this planet, that will be an act of war.

UMMM Y’all are several years behind the curve on this, they’ve already been doing it according to the conspiracy theorist... You ever heard of Chem trails?
I’m just saying..... wake up sheeple
These are probably the same idiots that wanted to spread oil over arctic snow to combat global cooling.
This is the equivalent of giving very strong chemotherapy to a perfectly healthy, cancer free patient simply because you can.
OH WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG HERE!!
Oh, goody!! A “hold my beer and watch this!!” moment on a global scale. And let’s not forget the Law of Unintended Consequences. Nothing good can come from this......
It’s like ObamaCare you’ll never know what it can do until after you’ve got it and it’s to late to stop it.
Burning witches to appease the sun-gods would be less polluting, and just about as reasonable.
Can’t they just go play with Venus or Mars and leave us the hell alone...
He’s far, far past just plain “imbecile”.
.
They already are geo-engineering. Geesh. It’s published!
The climate is in a contant state of temp flux. It goes up and then it goes down. Uuuup. Doooown. Life on earth has to adjust to it and for some, it is deadly and for others it is great. Depends on where you live and how adaptable you are.
Liberals love unnatural change - change they invent and impose. It makes them feel godly. But they seem to have a real problem with the change they can not control - natural change.
right on the money
Once the aerosol particles are in the atmosphere, they’d be hard to control or remove. This is a potential trigger for the next ice age.
Then again, we’d have one if the mega-volcano under Yosemite or Santorini blow up, too.
A lot of evidence suggests the world was much warmer than today until the Himalayas formed 40 million years ago, triggering the ice ages.
Based on overall Earth’s history, we’re still colder than average.
The coastal cities are liberal, hmmmm......
Sulphate aerosols? Really? As in sulfur dioxide? Isn't this the stuff the clean air freaks had scrubbed from smoke stacks? ... and now they're going to dump it in the atmosphere. Brilliant.
“That depends: How attached are you to coastal cities? “
“The Netherlands is a geographically low-lying country, with about 25% of its area and 21% of its population located below sea level,[9] and 50% of its land lying less than one metre above sea level”
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Netherlands
“In 2007, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) projected that during the 21st century, sea level will rise another 18 to 59 cm (7.1 to 23 in)”
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Current_sea_level_rise
“Amazingly almost half of the country lies below sea-level, up to six meters near Amsterdam.”
http://www.ahaack.net/travel/holland01/holland-travel-report-200105.html
So tell me again how a sea level rise over the next century of 7 to 23 inches is going to drown us all?
