Wis. Leftist Group's Mailing Tries to Shame Non-Voters by Revealing Their Names to Neighbors
News Buster.com ^ | June 2, 2012 | Tom Blumer

Friday evening, Madison, Wisconsin blogger Ann Althouse reported receiving (HT Instapundit) an "Incredibly creepy mail today from the Greater Wisconsin Political Fund." She has a put up an image of what she received with names and addresses redacted (except for her name). It's a list which includes Althouse and many of her neighbors indicating who has and hasn't voted in the last two elections.

Unsurprisingly, the Greater Wisconsin Political Fund is the political fundraising arm of the Greater Wisconsin Committee, both of which lean very left. Both support the effort to recall Badger State Governor Scott Walker. Both appear likely to get a virtually free pass from the establishment press. Althouse's reaction follows the jump:

... be assured, this was a list of real names and addresses of people who live near me, with the information about whether they voted in the last 2 elections. This is an effort to shame and pressure people about voting, and it is truly despicable. Your vote is private, you have a right not to vote, and anyone who tries to shame and an harass you about it is violating your privacy, and the assumption that I will become active in shaming and pressuring my neighbors is repugnant.

Not voting is a valid choice. If you don't have a preference in the election, don't vote. If you think no one deserves your vote, don't vote.

This may be the most disgusting thing I have ever received in the mail.

Two obvious observations:

One never knows in a election such as this with no real precedent, but the mailing appears to be a desperation tactic by leftists who sense that they're likely to lose on Tuesday and are trying to shore up a resigned, apathetic base.

So will Tom Barrett repudiate this tactic?

Holds true for local, state and national elections.

If you think no one deserves your vote, don't vote.

If you don't think, don't vote.

They won’t stop until every vestige of the American Republic has been swept away.

A lot of reason the lib voters are apathetic in the recall is the environment created by the lib politicians. I would think this would, for the most part do two things. Either 1) Make them more angry and sure to stay home, or 2) turn them out to vote against the nimrods who sent out this nonsense in the first place. This is the type of behavior used by totalitarian governments throughout history.

I know when and generally what party all my neighbors vote(d)....if you are a precinct committee person (or even, probably the general public) can get those records. Now, I wouldn’t sent something like this....but, I might do something more subtle....

This will backfire on the Leftist Libs. They have reached “desperation time”. It will blow up in their face.

Is it Legal to publish a list not just of voters’ names, but of whether or not they showed up to vote? I would think that info would not be public record, even though the clerk or registrar would have that info in their records. I can see voters registration lists being legal, but not whether or not you showed up to vote. What’s next a public card check to be sure everyone is voting the “correct” way.

MrsB received one of those mailers yesterday. Talk about not happy. Funny, my name wasn’t on the list. It still made my blood boil.
Most of my neighbors were on it though. They are not happy.
—MrsB was at one time an employee at UW med center— the place is infiltrated with these type of in your face union thugs. She hated that part of working there.— that’s how I believe it was sent to her.

On part of the letterhead; there is a USW logo.(United Steel Workers)

Got one of these myself today. I ripped it up. None of my business who did or didn’t vote in the last 2 elections.

Technically, the voter rolls are public information. However, ethically there is a big difference between googling your neighbor, and plastering what you found accross their front yard.

Remind me, who was it that threw a fuss over keeping the recall signatures private to “protect people”?

If only the leftists felt that way. If we waited for someone deserving, I would have voted twice in the last 42 years....Not waiting for a "chosen one" helped keep both Kerry and Gore out of the WH "throne".
