New Yorkers Leave Like East Germans Fled Communism

Big Government: New York thinks of itself as the place to be, but its high taxes have made it a place to flee. Those who have escaped the Empire State tax man could fill a major city.

From 1949 to 1961, more than 2.6 million of East Germany's 17 million population escaped to West Berlin or West Germany, a hemorrhage of humanity that led the Communists to construct the infamous Berlin Wall in 1961.

The state of New York, with about 19.5 million people, has no known plans to erect concrete barriers or barbed wire fences. But from 2000 to 2010 it suffered an exodus of some 3.4 million New Yorkers — nearly a million more people than in Germany's post-war experience and more than that of any other state.

And the outflow hasn't stopped. The income loss for the state is $45.6 billion, the Tax Foundation says.

Granted, it's not just one-way traffic. New York has plenty of immigration from abroad; its more than 4 million foreign-born residents give it the second-biggest immigrant population in America.

So net outward migration is about 1.3 million.

Most New York refugees are in sunny, zero-income-tax Florida. The Sunshine State, along with its rays, offer big relief from New York's state tax on income, which starts at almost 6.5% and reaches nearly 9% for the overly successful.

Voting with their feet is why the Berlin wall was built.

And now another oppressive regime that does not respect Capital is watching Capital leave.

Capitalism does not work without Capital.

Very cynical to call them locust people. Rush Limbaugh is in their flock. I hope you’re wrong. Its the low income immigrants that will bust the NY budget.

C'mon, IBD...the "overly successful." I sure hope that was tongue in cheek. I'd expect to hear that from Obama, not IBD.

They eventually come around and either leave, or learn how to behave.

The heat alone takes most of the starch out of them.
One or two hurricanes takes the rest out of all but the most stubbornly stupid.
They do have their little enclaves, but dare not travel far from them.

And our Florida nutjobs are generally more sociable and tolerated than NY nutjobs, bless their hearts.
The rednecks keep them under controll, while the churches keep them fed and clothed.

(Except in the enclaves)

Next to DC, NYC is the biggest cancer on the American Republic.

I was born and raised in the Tri-Lakes area of the Adirondacks. It is, with the possible exception of Alaska, the most beautiful place on God’s earth.

Er...was.

The liberals and their enviro/taxation policies turned it into Detroit with trees, employment-wise. And the Sierra Club types are quickly making Agenda 21 the law of the Blue Line. I miss it dearly from here in AZ, but I’d not even go back to visit. It was bad when I left in 95. I hear it’s far worse today.

Read up on ‘Whitney Park” to see what Sierra did to a once thriving timber harvesting area. Guess who got the ‘Castle’ for private use?

Wonder what sort of contribution they’re making to the tax base...

They’re all migrating to low-tax conservative states where they will vote to raise taxes and fund more government.
