DENTON, Texas — The Stars and Stripes go hand-in-hand with Memorial Day. But when a truck driver saw a truck stop that wasn't flying the American flag, he took matters into his own hands.
He put up a American flag himself. The problem is, it didn't stay up for long.
David Ray Thornburg couldn't understand why the Travel Centers of America truck stop off Interstate 35 in Denton wasn't displaying Old Glory — especially on Memorial Day.
So he grabbed his video camera and went to Walmart. The store donated a flag. Thornburg went back to the truck stop, climbed up the pole and put up the flag.
His YouTube video tells the rest of the story. He explains that just after he put the flag up, truck stop employees took it down.
Thornburg called it “a slap in the face.”

The guy says he hasn't been flying the flag for ten years. Where has your "outrage" been all this time that he hasn't been utilizing that pole!!!!? Where has the boycott been?

I still can't imagine a single fallen soul who'd rise from the grave and demand that a private American do this that or the other on their own gd private property to "honor" them.
Deal with what? A brand new American flag donated by the Wal-Mart Corporation flying from his flag pole?
Nobody even saw the part involving the rope, the climb, it was long over, the flag was in place, all they had to do was let it fly.
Instead they have really hurt themselves with their customer base.

There is your mistake, you don't seem to realize that once a donated flag was raised the manager went into physical action and made a powerful political statement on Memorial day, that is what private citizens are reacting to.
Fortunately you do not have the power to stop people from protesting, or forcing them to spend their money at the business he manages.
You nailed him good. Goes to show how someone can morph his comments into something preposterous.
(a) It is the universal custom to display the flag only from sunrise to sunset on buildings and on stationary flagstaffs in the open. However, when a patriotic effect is desired, the flag may be displayed 24 hours a day if properly illuminated during the hours of darkness.
(b) The flag should be hoisted briskly and lowered ceremoniously.
(c) The flag should not be displayed on days when the weather is inclement, except when an all weather flag is displayed.
(d) The flag should be displayed on all days, especially on New Year’s Day, January 1; Inauguration Day, January 20; Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday, third Monday in January; Lincoln’s Birthday, February 12; Washington’s Birthday, third Monday in February; Easter Sunday (variable); Mother’s Day, second Sunday in May; Armed Forces Day, third Saturday in May; Memorial Day (half-staff until noon), the last Monday in May; Flag Day, June 14; Father’s Day, third Sunday in June; Independence Day, July 4; National Korean War Veterans Armistice Day, July 27; Labor Day, first Monday in September; Constitution Day, September 17; Columbus Day, second Monday in October; Navy Day, October 27; Veterans Day, November 11; Thanksgiving Day, fourth Thursday in November; Christmas Day, December 25; and such other days as may be proclaimed by the President of the United States; the birthdays of States (date of admission); and on State holidays.
The manager himself disagrees with you, he has already made a statement that he simply took it down because he wanted to, he wasn’t taking it down for nightfall or out of respect.

I’m with you here. We’ve fallen pretty damned far when allegedly conservative posters cheer on some jack wagon’s blatant disrespect of private property rights.

To everyone who commented on the TA Denton site taking the flag, we wanted to let you know that on May 23, all of our location managers were sent a reminder to fly the American flag on Memorial Day. As a company, we also distributed over 75,000 American flag window decals to customers at our locations in recognition of our active and veteran service men and women. Obviously, our franchisee-operated site in Denton, TX, failed to comply with that policy. For that, we sincerely apologize.
Despite the dangers associated with a customer climbing a pole, we applaud the actions of the driver inasmuch as he reminded all of us that issuing a policy is no substitute for action. It was a poignant reminder of the efforts and sacrifices made by service men and women; we will redouble our efforts to ensure this failure will not occur again.
Since the video was released, the Denton site operator has taken down the broken flag pole to have it repaired. It is scheduled to go back up soon, and they will have a flag flying.

That said, you come on MY private property and climb MY flag pole - for whatever reason - I'll shoot your ass right off of it, then laugh when you bounce off the pavement.
The company disagrees with you about who the good guy is and the anti-American manager who disobeyed his boss will probably be fired. They address the action of the patriot truck driver, and the action of the jerk.

I see no one saying he has the right to put it up. It’s the dismay that the property owner would take down a perfectly good flag on Memorial Day. It would interesting to see the means of disposal.
You must have damaged your brain, because that was one very silly, childishly dramatic statement, not relevant to this discussion.
See post 58, your manager hero will probably be fired for his disobeying his company orders TO FLY THE FLAG and insulting the flag and patriotic Americans who frequent the Corporate property that he was managing.
This jerk was taking a personal stand against his bosses orders, the people who OWN this “private property”, and you are swarming to his team.
