Texas honor student thrown in jail for missing school: 11th-grader working two jobs...
NEW YORK DAILY NEWS ^ | May 26, 2012

A 17-year-old high school student working two jobs to support her siblings, while juggling college-level classes, spent 24 hours in jail this week for missing too much school, KHOU 11 News reported.

Diane Tran, an 11th-grader at Willis High School in Willis, Texas said she was often too exhausted to get to school in time.

Judge Lanny Moriarty said he warned the student last month not to miss any more classes or she would be violating truancy law, KHOU 11 News reported. When she missed school again, he had her thrown in jail.

"If you let one run loose, what are you gonna do with the rest of 'em? Let them go too?" Judge Moriarty asked the TV station.

Tran said her parents divorced unexpectedly and left town, leaving it up to her to support her younger sister, who lives with relatives, and her brother's university education, KHOU 11 News reported.

Tran works full-time at a dry cleaner and weekends at Waverly Manor wedding venue, where she lives with the family that owns the business.

At school she takes several advanced placement and college-level courses, often staying up all night, a classmate, coworker and friend of Tran's told the TV station.

Judge Moriarty admitted he was using Tran as an example. Willis High School has a warning about truancy violation on its website .

According to Texas truancy law students can have no more than 10 unexcused absences - full days or part days - within six months, and no more than three absences within one month.

“”Judge Moriarty admitted he was using Tran as an example.””

An example of what, people that can take care of themselves without relying on the government?

Gotta use a Vietnamese girl as an example to educate all the thugs.

My principal (who is black) admitted to skipping loads of school while maintaining a 4.0 GPA because he had to support his mom and siblings in the 80’s. He now has a GPA and can’t kick kids out of school because the districts “AYP” would go down.

If she was dealing drugs or whoring than the Judge would have let her go. Due to poor parenting.

I was sick a lot when I was a junior in HS. I was taking an advanced math class.... I don’t remember much about it but it involved calculus and trig. I did better the quarter I was at home then any other time during the year. The teacher scared me to death but I understood the book. In physics I got Cs on all the lab work but got 100% on all the standardized tests. 25 years later my son did the same.

I have several competing theories:

1. The Judge has no understanding of American history. We used to honor folks who worked while studying to improve themselves.

2. The Judge is trying to protect the interests of the [welfare] state by ensuring that no get's ahead who is not part of the system.

3. The Judge is trying to protect the interests of the [welfare] state by ensuring that no get's ahead. [No child can be left behind if the bus never leaves the station.]

4. The Judge has no understanding of traditional American values like working hard and studying to improve yourself.

5. The Judge has no understanding of why people try to come to America - like the opportunity to work hard and study to improve yourself.

6. The Judge has no idea how to apply common sense to decisions from the bench.

7. The Judge has no common sense.

8. The learned Judge is an unschooled idiot.

This judge is hiding. He doesn’t even have voicemail. I hope his political opponent takes notice and campaigns heavily against him.

This is not just the JOP’s fault. Where was the principal? Did she or any of the faculty even try to learn about this young woman or lift a finger to defend her? I’ll bet that if the young woman were a crack whore, the school councillor would have fallen over herself to help.

Imagine trying to cope all on your own without benefitting from the wisdom of a social worker (whose job it is to keep people like this in the system.)

Also, the JOP could be trying to make sure that she does not outshine some muckety-muck’s kid.

Judge Moriarty admitted he was using Tran as an example.

Let's hope Judge Moriarty is used as an example instead.

Also, who says there are no jobs for teens????

Sounds like she is outshining all of our kids.
