JAKARTAAmerican pop star Lady Gaga has decided to cancel her Indonesian concert amid security concerns after Islamic extremists threatened violence if she tried to perform in the Muslim-majority country.
While the "Born This Way Ball" concert scheduled for June 3 was sold out of its 52,000 tickets, whether it would actually happen had been uncertain for close to two weeks after local police refused to give the necessary permit for the concert. Police officials had originally said they were worried about potential violence and didn't approve of the pop star's message or outfits.
The police, who have to provide security and crowd control for big events, had seemed to be softening their stance in the past week, with some Indonesians believing the permits would be approved if Lady Gaga agreed to tone down her performance. However, in the end it was the artist's side that decided it wasn't worth the risk.
"With threats if the concert goes ahead, Lady Gaga's side is calling off the concert," Minola Sebayang, a lawyer for concert promoter Big Daddy, told the Associated Press on Sunday. "This is not only about Lady Gaga's security, but extends to those who will be watching her."
While the Southeast Asian nation of 240 million has been largely moderate and secular through most of its history, a small and sometimes violent sliver of Muslim hard-liners has at times sought to block events and shut down establishments they think clash with Islamic values. Some of the groups think Lady Gaga's skimpy clothing and suggestive dance moves and lyrics shouldn't be allowed in Indonesia, the world's biggest Muslim-majority nation.

Heard the name before. I’ll give them a you tube whirl and see whats up.
Have you ever listened to her patter in between songs at a concert? She is a flaming lib.
I agree completely except, being old enough to have seen Madonna in her prime (at JFK Stadium - Live Aid), I would say Lady Gaga is more "Madonna redux" than "Madonna on steroids". Madonna was easily (and remains) as prone to frequent reinventions and outrageous costumes and dazzling showmanship as Lady Gaga. It is yet to be seen if Lady Gaga is as talented and durable as Madonna, but I sure do like some of her songs. Lady Gaga's performance HERE, playing piano and singing a song she wrote, is simply extraordinary.
Cop another feel, mortarforker! I got your balls plus 8. She has 6 months on me, thats all....
I might be your daddy forker! I used to fork moose cows...
Up the Irons! Hell yes!
RIP R.J.D. we miss you. We Rock; we are The Last In Line.
Got to see Maiden, Dio and Motorhead at Cricket Pavilion in Phoenix. My then young daughter, whose only concert has been a Brittany show in Vegas and thought she had been to a ‘real concert’ became suddenly edumicated in the ways of ‘the Metal’ ;)
She’s been a metal chick every since. How could she not be? Dio, Maiden and Motorhead in 6 hours? That would convert the Pope ;)
Yes! I love you! ok, I don’t but I do! up the irons! long live R.J.D.! We Rock! Heavy Metal Rules! Suckers!
When you have Lemmy screaming “The OUICE of SPOUIDES!”, followed by a contest between Dio and Dickenson seeing who can string out a high vibrato’d note for 2 minuets (to midnight?), well...that’s metal heaven right there.
Yeah, I got you brotherman! Freakin’ awesome!
If Kajagoogoo married Lady Gaga, would the group marriage be known as Kajagoogoo Gaga?
Ugh! Her face looks like a badly decomposed burn victim.
A dead one that is.
Why don’t YOU go to Jakarta and denounce Islam if you’re so tough?
If she had gone through with it, and if she, any of her staff, or fans had been killed, you would be saying she was such a stupid idiot to be there in the first place.
