JAKARTA—American pop star Lady Gaga has decided to cancel her Indonesian concert amid security concerns after Islamic extremists threatened violence if she tried to perform in the Muslim-majority country.
While the "Born This Way Ball" concert scheduled for June 3 was sold out of its 52,000 tickets, whether it would actually happen had been uncertain for close to two weeks after local police refused to give the necessary permit for the concert. Police officials had originally said they were worried about potential violence and didn't approve of the pop star's message or outfits.
The police, who have to provide security and crowd control for big events, had seemed to be softening their stance in the past week, with some Indonesians believing the permits would be approved if Lady Gaga agreed to tone down her performance. However, in the end it was the artist's side that decided it wasn't worth the risk.
"With threats if the concert goes ahead, Lady Gaga's side is calling off the concert," Minola Sebayang, a lawyer for concert promoter Big Daddy, told the Associated Press on Sunday. "This is not only about Lady Gaga's security, but extends to those who will be watching her."
While the Southeast Asian nation of 240 million has been largely moderate and secular through most of its history, a small and sometimes violent sliver of Muslim hard-liners has at times sought to block events and shut down establishments they think clash with Islamic values. Some of the groups think Lady Gaga's skimpy clothing and suggestive dance moves and lyrics shouldn't be allowed in Indonesia, the world's biggest Muslim-majority nation.

Sorry, mate, but I have listened to her music. Some rehashed disco and pseudo techno beats coupled with some passable lyrics. I know this is difficult for you to believe, but there are audiophiles you have taken the time to listen to her music and still find it to be annoying.

This just cost the GLBT crew a couple things. One is money, two is propaganda value in that country. Now that the muzzies scared her off, they will turn their threats toward other performers who are unislamic. But alas. music itself is unislamic.
The powers in the entertainment are now faced with a very real dilemma. Continue kissing muzzie ass and go broke/lose converts to their agenda or be honest with their treatment of muslim coverups going forward.
I think money and the gay agenda will trump muzzies in short order. It may turn out that (and I can’t belive I’m typing this...) Lady Gaga is the turning point we’ve waited for. Then again, we still have the lesser of those evils to contend with.

This is true. but I was more referring to the political side of the industry. Metal, while now commercialized to a greater degree than ever, is a lot less agenda oriented. I agree completely except, being old enough to have seen Madonna in her prime (at JFK Stadium - Live Aid), I would say Lady Gaga is more "Madonna redux" than "Madonna on steroids". Madonna was easily (and remains) as prone to frequent reinventions and outrageous costumes and dazzling showmanship as Lady Gaga. It is yet to be seen if Lady Gaga is as talented and durable as Madonna, but I sure do like some of her songs. Lady Gaga's performance HERE, playing piano and singing a song she wrote, is simply extraordinary.
