JAKARTA—American pop star Lady Gaga has decided to cancel her Indonesian concert amid security concerns after Islamic extremists threatened violence if she tried to perform in the Muslim-majority country.
While the "Born This Way Ball" concert scheduled for June 3 was sold out of its 52,000 tickets, whether it would actually happen had been uncertain for close to two weeks after local police refused to give the necessary permit for the concert. Police officials had originally said they were worried about potential violence and didn't approve of the pop star's message or outfits.
The police, who have to provide security and crowd control for big events, had seemed to be softening their stance in the past week, with some Indonesians believing the permits would be approved if Lady Gaga agreed to tone down her performance. However, in the end it was the artist's side that decided it wasn't worth the risk.
"With threats if the concert goes ahead, Lady Gaga's side is calling off the concert," Minola Sebayang, a lawyer for concert promoter Big Daddy, told the Associated Press on Sunday. "This is not only about Lady Gaga's security, but extends to those who will be watching her."
While the Southeast Asian nation of 240 million has been largely moderate and secular through most of its history, a small and sometimes violent sliver of Muslim hard-liners has at times sought to block events and shut down establishments they think clash with Islamic values. Some of the groups think Lady Gaga's skimpy clothing and suggestive dance moves and lyrics shouldn't be allowed in Indonesia, the world's biggest Muslim-majority nation.

I’ll start my multi-part mini-rant by responding to this first: The word, printed in both Arabic and English on my tee shirt and ball cap, is not an insult, but a source of pride.
Onward: A good friend of mine is a Chinese man, from a merchant family, who grew up in Indonesia. The history of their barbarism to the Chinese there - who keep their economy afloat, except when they are all killed of and looted by the natives every few years - is chilling to hear about. If this is a “moderate” Muslim country, I’d hate to be in an extreme one.
Lady Gaga. If she is a lady. Typical clueless showbiz phenomenon, probably unable make the connection between her in-your-face deviance and her support for would-be political tyrants who would round up and liquidate her kind if they finally came to power.
She isn’t conservative, look at what she devotes her life and talents to.

I too was surprised at how talented this young woman is...saw her sing with Tony Bennett...was amazed at the class act with a real class act. Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, un huh that's her...is no worse than some of the haute couture designers for both men and women....and they all show some degree in exhibitionism - some fun....some sick.
