Snoring and other types of 'sleep disordered breathing', as it is known, can deprive the body of enough oxygen for hours at a time.
Scientists now believe having low blood oxygen levels can trigger the development of cancerous tumours, by promoting the growth of the vessels that feed them.
They say in future doctors could help people fight the disease by stopping them snoring.
Researchers in the US looked at cancer rates in more than 1,500 people, in a study of sleep problems that has been going for 22 years.
They found those with severe sleep disordered breathing (SDB) were 4.8 times more likely to develop cancer than those who had no such problems.
Those with moderate SDB were at double the risk, while those with only a slight problem had a 10 per cent increased chance, according to the group, from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
By far the most common type of sleep disordered breathing problem is obstructive sleep apnoea.
In this, the airway frequently collapses during the breathing cycle, leaving the sleeper struggling for breath. Typically this produces snoring and repeated forced waking.
Sleep apnoea is already known to be associated with other health problems including obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart attacks and strokes.
As being overweight can cause cancer, it could simply have been the case that snoring had no active role in promoting cancer, and was simply a proxy for obesity.
However, the researchers took into account whether participants were a healthy weight or not, as well as a range of other confounding factors, such as age, sex, and smoking status.
The link between SDB and cancer held true even after these were adjusted for. In fact, the association was stronger for those of a healthy weight than the obese.

whatever
snoring doesn’t cause cancer...being fat enough to snore causes cancer.
These two sentences were in the article:

The link between SDB and cancer held true even after these were adjusted for. In fact, the association was stronger for those of a healthy weight than the obese.
Uh-oh. I was about to crash for the night.
thanks Mount Athos. :’)
Guess this gives new meaning to “catching some zzz’s”!
I'm healthy, close to thin, don't smoke, have plenty of sex and snore.
Anything that follows 'scientists believe' in a sentence can be safely considered to be hogwash.
Then quit drinking alcohol after 6 PM.
Meaning... you snore during sex, or you have sex while snoring?
I suppose it doesn't matter much which it is, as long as there's plenty.
Interesting. I think I will research that further. Thanks, Mount Athos!
I’ve lost 55 lbs since the 11th of March. Three weeks into my weight loss, I stopped snoring. The wife loves it.
Being a scientist myself and a recipient of a Nobel award with my fellow researcher, Homer Simpson, my research as led me to the conclusion that listening to rap music causes cancer.
We are now doing research to find out if excessive sex causes cancer. My co-researcher Homer has long been a big advocate of this type or research.
Gotta go now. A nice coed has just signed in at the desk.
Wow! What are you doing?
That’s amazing, fantastic
I completed a 60 day juice fast on the 11th of May. Juiced fruits and veggies only. After my physical and lab results this week, I plan to do another 60 day juice fast. Check out Joe Cross’ “Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead.”. The movie saved my life. While eating now, I eat mostly fruits and veggies while also having smaller portions of chicken, turkey or fish. My eating habits for myself and my family have radically changed for the better.
If concerned about snoring vis-a-vis cancer, and you want to concentrate on diminishing the snoring, then a tremendous factor is how one sleeps. IF you sleep on your back, you can diminish snoring BIG time by switching to favor side sleeping.
Do you really think thaat thin people don’t snore?
Lack of 02 will cause all kinds of health problems including death.........
Being gay also causes cancer ..
On another note they’ve found that rude people get cancer 4.7 times that of people who snore.
My father ate all the wrong stuff, ate too much of all the wrong stuff, never exercised, snored so loud it shook the house, was skin and bones and lived to age 85 when he died from heart failure.
He did not, however, smoke, drink or dance - he was a Baptist minister.
So I have concluded that perhaps dancing causes cancer.
How true! That isn't a Heinlein quote, but it sounds like something he would have said!
your ignorance is simply amazing...
being fat can cause you to snore...
obstructive sleep apnea has NOTHING to do with weight, all types of people have apnea. I have apnea, as does my 23 year old son.
Mine is caused by too small a jaw forcing my tongue to the back of my throat, causing blockage.
My son has thryroid problems, resulting in an extra layer of “fat?” around his neck, resulting in blockage.
If ya wanna comment, then comment.
If ya wanna just sling insults, to to hell
I’ve had sleep apnea since I was a teenager. I don’t drink, smoke or am I overweight. I also exercise. You don’t have to be fat to snore.
Wow! I just ordered that movie. I don’t have a juicer. maybe I need one.
Did you find any juices that actually tasted good? I started down that path but the 'mean green' was just too horrible. The fruit juices I could do, but clearly they're not as good as the veggie juices.
I was pretty faithful to the Mean Green. I tried to put spinach in all of my juices whether veggie or fruit. I will admit, the MG is definitely an acquired taste and your portions need to be balanced to taste. For example, less kale, more spinach, less lemon and more orange, less cucumber and more green apple, etc. Not everyone will like this juice. For myself, MG was essential everyday. I tried to always have more veggie juices than fruit, as the fruit is really just extra fruit sugar.
Congratulations on your achievement!
LOL!
