The main sorting systems (mail processing centers) are where USPS locates all the expensive robotic machinery that sorts the mail. If you closed them where would you sort the mail?
You do realize you'd probably need to hire more than a million people to do that work.

UPS, FedEx, whoever takes over the building. In fact the new service would probably hire a good many of the outgoing USPS employees.
