Michelle Goldberg on the Ann Romney Hitler Tempest (...her very qualified apology)
The Daily Beast ^ | Monday, May 14, 2012 | Michelle Goldberg

A stray cable comment triggers an Internet firestorm. Michelle Goldberg on the Ann Romney tempest—and her very qualified apology.

SNIP

Here’s what happened. On Sunday, I appeared on a Mother’s Day edition of Up With Chris Hayes, a weekend morning talk show, along with Katie Roiphe, Eve Ensler, and Jamila Bey.

SNIP

One of the show’s topics was the saccharine op-ed that Ann Romney published in USA Today, “Three seasons of motherhood.” The main point I wanted to make about it is that our society offers mothers a deal: what we don’t give them in tangible support, we make up for insipid paeans.

SNIP

I got into trouble, however, by saying that Romney’s closing lines, about how there is “no crown more glorious” than the “crown of motherhood,” reminded me of the pronatalist propaganda of World War II-era totalitarian regimes. That was a mistake. Not because I don’t think it’s true—when I read Romney’s words, I immediately thought of the “Motherhood Glory” medals that Stalin gave to women who had lots of children, and of the Nazi cult of motherhood, which Hitler called women’s “highest exaltation.”

SNIP

So my apologies aren’t for Ann Romney, but for everyone else. I’m truly sorry to have given the right a pretext for another tedious spasm of feigned outrage. I’m sorry to have stirred one of the teapot tempests that now dominate the increasingly dispiriting world of political journalism. I’m especially sorry if I’ve done anything to strengthen the conservative myth that liberals disdain motherhood. I certainly don’t. As it happens, I’m hoping to have a baby of my own very soon. When I do, like most mothers I know, I’d much prefer accessible day care, quality public schools, and affordable health care to a metaphorical crown, however glorious it may be.

Ann Romney says, "Michelle Obama is a lovely woman."

The Democrat says, "Ann Romney is like Hitler."

This why compromise is impossible and is not to be desired. Comprise ends up with the Conservative dead in a ditch while the Fascist struts around with big boots.

In other words, she's looking for free stuff.

I violate Godwin’s law with impunity. But I know when to apply it. I’m a student of Nazi Germany, its rise to power, its inner workings, the culture in which it was allowed to thrive, and its ultimate downfall as well as the mistakes that led to it.

This woman just compares people that disagree with her to hitler. That is why Godwin’s law was created. for folks like her. It is why some bicycles have training wheels.

Apparently, only ANTI-natalist propaganda is tolerated in today’s more enlightened totalitarian regimes.

“In other words, she’s looking for free stuff”

Exactly. She can’t understand why mother’s don’t have paid maternity leave. Apparently she never had to make a payroll and actually worry about making a profit. What do these stupid women think? Does their work get magically completed while they are home? We hire temp workers to cover women when they are off for maternity leave and everyone else has to work harder to cover their work load.

Add paid leave to that and watch the employment rate of child bearing age women drop even further.

If she’s concerned about paid leave, she can find a job with disability insurance or buy her own policy.

Ann Romney says, "Michelle Obama is a lovely woman."

The Democrat says, "Ann Romney is like Hitler."

And they're both wrong.

“when I read Romney’s words, I immediately thought of the ‘Motherhood Glory’ medals that Stalin gave to women who had lots of children, and of the Nazi cult of motherhood, which Hitler called women’s ‘highest exaltation.’”

That sort of thing only occurs to people looking for an excuse to compare people to nazis and commies. Which, according to the internet, is exceedingly common, especially for nazi comparisons.

Unless she’s already over 7 months pregnant, “hoping to have a baby” probably means she and the husband can’t figure out how to do it the normal way.
