My maternal Uncle, Major John T. Dowd, USA, served in all four Airborne Divisions during his long career. He started out in the Cavalry in the early 30's, served with the 82nd Airborne in WWII, with the 101st in Korea, and had boots on the ground in 'Nam in the late 50's. Can't remember what outfit he was with then - was with Special Forces in their formative years. Four Purple Hearts. He retired in 1960 and served as a Superintendent of U.S. National Cemeteries in Annapolis, MD, Winchester, VA and Hampton, VA until shortly before his death in 1991. He was like a second father to me and one of my greatest heroes.

My last (and only) road trip to Ft. Campbell was to measure the field strength from a flight radar at the proposed location for a new flight simulator building. When I first became aware of the problem, it seemed logical that someone surely had made these measurements before & all one had to do was look up the information. That appeared not to be the case & the only solution was to make on site measurements. I provided the numbers to the base people and never heard from them again. Hope everything went well.
Enjoyed the short visit.

Freep mail me to be on or off the Daily Bread ping list
Seeing Near And Far
May 15, 2012
Having two healthy eyes is not enough to see clearly. I know this from experience. After a series of eye surgeries for a torn retina, both eyes could see well but they refused to cooperate with each other. One eye saw things far away and the other saw things close up. But instead of working together, they fought for supremacy. Until I could get new prescription glasses 3 months later, my eyes remained unfocused.
Something similar happens in our view of God. Some people focus better on God when they see Him as close upwhen they think of Him as intimately present in their daily life. Other Christians see God more clearly as far away or far beyond anything we can imagine, ruling the universe in power and majesty.
While people disagree about which view is best, the Bible works like a prescription lens helping us to see that both are correct. King David presents both views in Psalm 145: The Lord is near to all who call upon Him (v.18) and Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised; and His greatness is unsearchable (v.3).
Thankfully, our Father in heaven is near to hear our prayers yet so far above us in power that He can meet every need.
Lord, Youre the high and lofty One,
Yet close enough to hear our voice;
Youre powerful, yet personal;
Your love for us makes us rejoice. Sper
God is big enough to care for the smallest needs.
Read: Psalm 145

Well, the pickup is on the rack at the Ford place. When my brother called him yesterday they were just getting to it.
They may call sometime this morning to let us know what is wrong with it, how long it may take to fix it and the cost.
The engine is working. Only thing that I now of that is not is the ignition and the tires are locked up. Something snapped underneath.
It may be a week or two, hopefully not much more than that.
I've already vowed not to visit that spot ever again.
