Guy. When POTUS starts ruling by EO and goes around the congress when it suits him, and his main accomplice, Holder, has demonstrated his overt bias, I’d say that some nervousness and vigilance is indicated.

Along with what you said about the real trap at the next exit, such checkpoints also rely on video cameras with powerful zoom lenses, often located on a highway overpass ahead of the bogus “drug search” sign. They are observing cars through the front windshield for sudden activity, including tossing anything out of a window.

Nah, not interested in what could be tossed from a window.
They're after the 10-100 Kilo runs.

I seem to recall a case regarding refusal to cooperating with a search or telling them to go get a warrant, then escalates to probable cause. It was just a few months ago we were discussing it right here on FR.

Correct. I remember those days...there were a handful of us warning against stuff like the “Patriot Act,” and for the most part, our warnings fell on deaf ears.

Thank you, George W. Bush and the Republican Congress at the time

So many warned that in the wrong hands the Patriot Act would/could be abused. The 'sunset' was overturned because we failed to neutralize the threat in a timely fashion.

And now it is in abusive hands. There is a huge lesson to be learned and a lot of damage to be undone, that the election in November isn't going to fix...

Creepy, truck drivers are asked to spy and report on people, drones are watching us, internet is being monitored...

they used the word terrorist numerous times, and then Timothy McVeigh. Always a boggeyman.

I bought “Enemies” years ago—put it on the shelf, and never read it! Then, of course, I forgot I had it.

Now is the time to read that book from cover to cover.

(Wish I could get it on my Nook. It’s nice to be able to enlarge the print for my tired old eyes...)

They depend on intimidation. A mom of three, with kids in the car, may well know that her car cannot be searched without a warrant or a specific suspicion. However will she run the risk of being abused, shouted at, guns waved around, kids scared, everyone prevented from leaving for a long time, and so on?

The TSA have become the terrorists.

They pull me over, they better have a warrant or proof I’ve violated a traffic law. If it’s a “random” search, they won’t like the response.

I will NOT tolerate being treated as such. They try to arrest me and I’ll make it worth the charges. TSA had better start backing the hell off before it gets real ugly.

Nope, it’s not their highway, it’s the public highway. My taxes helped build it and maintain it. I will NOT be molested by TSA on it or anywhere I travel.

TSA puts their hands on me, I’m putting my hands on them. It’s that simple. They touch my child and the event will go down in history.

It appears that they are testing this out at truck weigh stations where all commercial drivers have to stop anyway. Adding these random searches to that routine.

I do not have a problem with them asking folks to be aware and to report actviity...but I believe most American already do that.

I do have a problem with these warrantless, random searches.

If and when they start setting up road blocks along the highways and stop everyone doing the same, is when they will have problems with John Q public.

That will be coming. Any of us with conservative congressmen (and that’s a mority of us) or Senators (hopefully to be a majority soon) must contact them in the strongest terms and complain about this infringement of our rights and violation of the constitution.

No probable cause, warrantless, infringement on our right to travel simply because we are traveling. That leads to abject tyranny...of course, for the “good” of us all.

Does anyone know if the driver has the option to refuse the search?

NDAA ensures that we'll never know. And who gave the oval office fraud that power? Our own GOP handed it to him. Resist a TSA stop and "disappear". Brilliant.

I think you are naive about that. Sure, they’d like to catch a 10-100 kilo load, but that is like finding a needle in a million haystacks. All they need is “probable cause” to stop John Q Citizen and toss his car. If they find so much as an old pot pipe, they own you. Or cash, such as for a cash-only auction. They’ll just take the cash. Or a firearm that is not kosher in that jurisdiction. Bingo, they own you again. They do this all the time. “Policing for profit.”

You are free to travel anywhere in America although the US G’mint will assign you a minder.
Otherwise, San Fran is hoping for random governmental cavity checks.

No grounds....just the way it is.

They have to confer up the chain of command to determine if there might be probable cause, even consult a judge.

Follow up question is “am I being detained?”

Follow up question (if yes) is “how about my Miranda warning?”
