KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A former Kansas City woman who converted to Islam in 2005 said she was harassed for years at AT&T, and that the abuse boiled over in 2008 when her boss snatched her head scarf and exposed her hair.
A Jackson County jury on Thursday awarded Susann Bashir $5 million in punitive damages in her discrimination lawsuit, along with $120,000 in lost wages and other actual damages.
The Kansas City Star reported Saturday that the award appears to be the largest jury verdict for a workplace discrimination case in Missouri history.

but you Christians better now show a cross or you’ll be shot
Better be an automatic appeal on this one. Sounds like a truly psycho jury. I wouldn’t have awarded her five dollars.
She converted to Islam because it was the only religion that came close to wearing a bag over her head.
gag me
I think $5 million is ridiculous but I can’t see any justification for what the manager did.
The boss sounds like a huge jerk, I’d be calling this sexual harassment and assault on top of things. No one has the right to disrobe an employee - and as the headscarf was a piece of clothing, this was a forced disrobing with the intent to humiliate and intimidate. The fact that he wasn’t fired from AT&T for this act - alone - means that AT&T needed some monitary incentive to force managment to behave in a civilized manner.
Perhaps $5 Million will cause AT&T to re-visit their policies on bosses assaulting employees.
The fact that she was Muslim has no bearing. If she was undergoing cancer treatment and wore a scarf to hide her bald head - the act is the same in maliciousness. If she were a man and had knocked a few teeth out - she would have been fired for assault. Thus, this was very much an AT&T supported enviroment of management hostility.
Unfortunately, many companies refuse to consider policies in line with what most people expect to be a lesson we all learn in Kindergarten. When this fails, the courts step in.
She just happens to be the ‘lucky’ recipient of a lesson that needed to be taught to a large company.
Do the jurors know where the 5M comes from? What a bunch of morons.
I believe that the state limits the additional restitution to a certain multiple of the damages...thereby giving this muslim idiotess far less money.
However, since she has beenb “exposed” and dishonored, is not not required for her husband and neighbors to stone yer to death?

Woulda been cheaper and more culturally sensitive to behead her.
Allegedly.
Hot dawg!
Found a new way to fund the Jihad!
“The boss sounds like a huge jerk,”
Boss and employee later split the proceeds.
Sounds like the makings of a great scam.
Her boss and the other Christian employees at AT&T also have First amendment freedom of religion and the right to express their views.
They should also sue her for prohibiting their freedom of speech and religion.
What makes you think that the boss is a man?
“Juries” are a joke. A bunch of out of work clowns always wanting to “send a message”. Morons.
Wow... I'd never thought of that. Now to find a willing manager. For $2.5 Million I'd put up with an awful lot!!
Full of people who are too stupid to figure out how to get out of jury duty.
Lawyer gets 40%. Then come taxes.
Basically AT&T is paying Jizya.
AT&T hires morons to operate many lines of their business.
We have a green telephone box on a tiny easement on our property. AT&T hired a spraying company to keep the weeds down around this box. The sprayers shot their weed killer 35 feet off the easement and killed several healthy trees, including a 100 year old black oak.
I took them to court and believe me, they paid. Bastards !
Is it just me, or is there something just basically wrong with a boss involuntarily removing any article of clothing from an employee of the opposite gender? Call me old fashioned.
Snatched her scarf? Good thing it wasn’t the other way around!
I was one of those stupid people once. DUI case. I’LL NEVER DO IT AGAIN. Too many morons wanted to send a message to the police for pulling the drunk over. They didn’t think it was fair to throw the perp in jail. Geeeesh! My head exploded and the stuff it the fan. I’ll never do it again. EVER!
$2,500,000 x 0.6 = $1,5000,000
This assumes I split the $5 Mil with my boss on a scam, then lawyers take 40%, then I get left wtih $1.5 Million. I don’t have to paypay taxes on either Back Pay, or from the settlement:
Back pay and damages for emotional distress received to satisfy a claim under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
Beats the hell out of working, doesn’t it?

Looks like this jury was made up of some of the millions of Americans that are pure idiots.
Where did they pick this Jury. Iraq???
Ditto
LMAO!
Check out the picture in the article.
When did Karl Rove become a Muslim woman?
How much would they have awarded a woman whose boss pulled up her skirt?
“Despite the jury’s award, Bashir stands to receive much less than $5 million because Missouri law caps such awards at five times the actual damage amount, plus attorney fees.”
Fnaaar fnaaar!
Just another reason companies move their offices overseas. To stop BS law suits like this. Socialism, and multiculturalism is kill America.
No, the jurors don’t realize they will get to pay it. They think the “evil corporation” will get it from its large handbag.
That’s how I feel.
I know that there are Mennonite and some Baptists/Pentecostals who have religious wear for their religion and I don’t think they should be treated like that.
Legally speaking, once the jury hands down its verdict, it's no longer just "alleged."
Sounds like a lot of 'management' that I ran into while working for AT&T after the split.
I think the members of the jury should be personally on the hook for the difference. That would end these absurd judgements in a hurry.
As an Atheist I would sue her for constantly exposing me to religion against my will.
