GOP voters want Santorum, Rubio for VP

Republican voters would like to see Rick Santorum or Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) standing at Mitt Romney's side this fall, a new poll found.
A Reuters-Ipsos poll released Thursday found Santorum and Rubio are the top choices among Republican voters to be Romney’s running mate.
Republican voters were presented with a list of 19 names, and a plurality, 18 percent, said Rick Santorum would be the best candidate to fill out the GOP ticket, while 17 percent went for Rubio.
Rubio was by far the most popular candidate with Tea Party supporters, and the only potential vice presidential pick to pull more than 20 percent with any of the groups represented in the poll.
In addition to being from a swing state with a large delegate prize, Romney might find Rubio’s Tea Party support appealing as a running mate, since he has struggled to win over some conservatives. Santorum came in second among Tea Party supporters with 16 percent.
But if Romney hopes to appeal to independents, Rubio performs dismally, pulling only 4 percent of their support. Santorum led among independents at 16 percent, and was followed closely by New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush (R).
Christie and Bush tied for third among Republicans in the poll, each pulling 13 percent, with former Arkansas Gov. and GOP presidential candidate Mike Huckabee taking 12 percent.
A number of potential VP picks who seemed to be gaining momentum recently barely registered in the poll.
Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), the author of the House Republican budget, campaigned with Romney in his home state last week but logged only 4 percent in the Reuters-Ipsos poll. Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell, who appeared with Romney at a campaign stop in his home state on Thursday, didn’t even register in the poll.
Ohio Sen. Rob Portman, who many believe to be the safest pick, and therefore the likeliest, also failed to register in the poll, finishing behind Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal and former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty.
The Reuters-Ipsos poll of 579 Republicans has a 4.7 percent margin of error, the poll of 308 independents has a 6.5 percent margin of error, and the poll of 317 Tea Party supporters has a 6.4 percent margin of error.
Shows how much traction the Natural Born Citizen issue has in the popular mind. Rubio? Fine handsome boy. Just not a Natural Born Citizen and therefore ineligible for VP or Presidential candidacy.
In watching the news, I have noticed several Dem “bright”lights saying that Rubio would be a good choice for VP. I know it would not be because he is not a natural-born citizen and would thus give cover to Obama. The natural-born citizen issue is the best case against Obama’s legitimacy. If Rubio gets the nod, we get the finger and we will have another McCain on our hands. I will not vote for someone who is not constiyutionally qualified for the office.
OH GOD NO!!! Not Santorum. He would not even be able to deliver PA. Rubio would carry FL. Whoever wins FL wins the White House.
Rubio is perfectly eligible, but that’s neither here nor there. I think Romney will choose Santorum (which I suspect was Santorum’s game all along) because he and Santorum are very close on the issues (both big government nanny-staters) and differ only on the degree of Evangelical-style social conservativism.
The people who voted for Santorum didn’t do so because he differed significantly from Romney in policy areas (and Romney doesn’t differ significantly from the Dems in policy) but because of the social conservative aspect.
They are both unlikeable personally, so I don’t think there will be much rivalry. Rubio is much more likeable so I think he and Romney might not get along very well, even though Rubio has a Mormon background, too. Obama basically picked Biden because he didn’t want anybody who would overshadow him, and I think Romney will pick Santorum for the same reason.
As everyone knows I supported Santorum during the Primary, but I do not want him as Vice President nominee. I don’t want him part of Romney’s disaster. Santorum is young enough to run again and become President on his own merits. Newt would be a better pick since this was his last chance to run for President due to his age. Rubio is not eligible.
Doesn’t matter who the VP choice is if the man at the top of the ticket doesn’t stand a chance.
But hasn't the current POTUS blazed a trail to the presidency for just such people?

Marco Rubio IS eligible to be POTUS or VP. Don’t buy into that conspiracy theory that keeps circulating around here.

Count me in that number. I just stop by here periodically to see if the Conservative “purist” crazies are still here; and they are. I’ll private mail you two good Conservative websites a lot of us have gone to.
I was so tired of that crap myself and seriously considered leaving this board. But there are others like yourself that keep me here.

The Heritage Guide to the Constitution
The governing phrase from Art. II, Sec. 1 of the Constitution.
Do you have to be born within the territorial limits of the United States to be such a citizen? No, said the Founders. The Heritage Foundation’s Guide shows how the First Congress in 1790 provided that “the children of citizens of the United States that may be born beyond the sea or out of the limits of the United States, shall be considered as natural born.” This was our first naturalization statute (1 Stat. 104). This Congress contained many Members, notably James Madison himself, who had just framed the Constitution in Philadelphia.
Now, consider Marco Rubio. His parents were resident aliens when he was born in 1971, seeking and soon to receive their status as naturalized U.S. citizens. Under the Fourteenth Amendment, “all persons born...in the United States and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the states wherein they reside.” This “subject to the jurisdiction thereof” clause shows why Rubio is — and, very likely, why children of illegal aliens are not — a “natural born citizen of the United States.”
