Role of nurses in Third Reich “overlooked”: comment

The work of Nazi doctors is a well-documented lesson in medical ethics. There was even a separate trial for them at Nuremberg and seven were hanged. But what about the nurses who assisted them? Their role has been airbrushed from history, says an Australian academic. Professor Linda Shields, of Curtin University, expressed her concerns in Nursing Review three weeks ago. “There has been a great deal of scholarship on the role of doctors and what they did in Nazi-occupied Europe, what has been neglected or overlooked is the role of nurses,” Shields said. “And yet most of the killings that we are looking at occurred in hospitals where nurses made up the bulk of the workforce. Nurses were very much involved in the killings and the camp experiments,” she said.

Survivor testimonies and available documents state that nurses actively and voluntarily participated in Nazi euthanasia programs, killing over 10,000 people, many of them children. Some estimates are as high as 30,000 victims. While it is impossible to find exact figures on the number of nurses involved - as most of the information was destroyed after the war - Shields says it was a minority of nurses but most have not been held to account for their crimes.

“The bulk of nurses working in Nazi-occupied Europe cared for their patients appropriately, but there were a handful of nurses who chose, and the word is chose, to follow the regime that declared that some of their patients should be killed. These nurses were not forced to do it. The nurses who did these things did them of their own free will,” says Shields, whose historical research into the Nazi era has earned her a place in an international nursing hall of fame, which she will formally receive in August.

Many nurses were allowed to relocate to other hospitals because they disagreed with the objectives of the programs, records state. “There is no record of anyone being sent to a concentration camp. There is no record of anyone losing their job over refusing to participate in the sterilisation or euthanasia programs,” Shields says. She and fellow researcher Dr Susan Benedict will publish a book of their research later this year. ~ Nursing Review, Apr 3

Nurses will also be expected to carry out the dictates of American death panels.

Worth noting the next time you hear a teenager complain about all us “old people” using up all the world’s resources.

Nurses assist in abortions right here, right now. They are celebrated as Heroes of the People by the left.

Nurses always get the feces dumped upon them. They are held responsible for anything untoward including medical malpractice. Families don't see the treating physicians unless they camp in their relative's room. During the pogroms the Nazi's conducted against European Jewery, nurses were probably getting yelled at for not having the ovens hot enough. Nurses always catch hell! 'Nurse didn't, I tell you that I wanted the infectious diseases in a 50cc syringe'

Let me tell you big shot Aussie Nurse Educator. Go back to the wards and take care of patients and leave nurses who take care of patients alone! Don't throw the hardest working people in the hospital under the bus Bitch!

No kidding — I was just going to say the same thing. We’re about to have this start happening right in front of our eyes (and already do with all the baby-killing) and we still have the chance to stop it. What was done in war is done. Some people need to be perpetual victims and live in the past of 70+ years ago.

Why am I not surprised that a Romneybot TROLL is telling people not to worry about past euthanasia programs.

Leftists have ALWAYS favored killing the disabled, elderly and other vulnerable groups and Nazi Germany is a reminder that it can happen again. But, trolls like YOU tell us to stop "persecuting" the Nazis.

Socialized medicine REQUIRES death panels to remain solvent and your pal Myth is the father of American socialized medicine. When Romneycare v2.0 (aka Obamacare) gets ramped up and the death panels are targeting people for extermination, I'm sure all of the Romneybots will just be saying to "get over it" because they believe Myth will protect them.

Let's look at this from another perspective.

We live in a country where leftist policies have impacted the mentally ill and mentally retarded for over 30 years.

Safe facilities where these people were boarded were closed. Although some were not good places, many were.

The mentally ill and mentally retarded were boarded, fed, given minimal healthcare, kept clean, and kept from being prey or preying upon the populace.

Families of the mentally ill or mentally retarded were no longer attempting to manage psychotic violent and vulnerable relatives.

Today the mentally ill and mentally retarded are loose in the streets. They are expected to follow medication regimes that they dislike and often run from. They are expected to manage the outside world when they cannot and they, if they are lucky, end up in homeless shelters that provide a dite of the care that was once provided at the local state hospitals.

The patient right laws do not permit less than the fullest freedoms and one has to flunk the test a lot in order to curtail the freedom of a mentally ill patient with continuous poor judgment.

Right now near you there are patients coming into hospitals nationwide, who are horrifically beaten because of their behaviors, who are filled with lice and bites because of their poor judgment, who are fantastically psychotic because they need a protective boundary to be able to continue to be medicated.

We no longer provide the care for the people that our forefathers thought was the basis of human compassion and charity.

Instead we have a government with out of control rules. It is heartbreaking. What is more heartbreaking is to see families whose hands are tied as their beloved child or spouse becomes increasingly insane and hurt.

My fear, that the leftist blob cannot go back to congregant custodial care. That instead, the blob will talk itself into mercy-killing these poor souls. Because they will make it a choice and an attractive option. It will fit the mindset of the intellectuals as we move in that direction as these self same intellectuals debate life and death and who gets to live and who gets to die.

It will not be pretty. But it will be logical. German doctors who killed numerous of the mentally ill and mentally retarded all had logical reasons to kill them. Reasons these educated people believed.

I guess we just may party like it is 1932 all over again.

What have we come to?

I think your history is spot-on and that that is coming next. Always the “unintended consequences” with the leftists.

My father and his family were in one of Hitler’s camps, and many of my relatives were murdered by cruel doctors/nurses in Siberian concentration camps. I have little doubt it’s all happening all over again — and my parents say the same thing.

Any country that can murder 50+ million babies, plus countless others (we both know plenty of examples), is not too far off from killing off the elderly, disabled, mentally ill, and so forth.

Any country that allows irradiation and molestation of innocent citizens, but especially the disabled and elderly, isn’t too far off from 1932, or many other horrific periods that are even more recent.
