APRIL 27, 2012 12:00 A.M. Carter Redux? Maybe Not, Say The Demographics. By Mona Charen
Every new datum on economic stagnation such as Thursdays Labor Department announcement that unemployment claims remain at a three-month high increases the temptation to compare the 2012 presidential race to that of 1980.
Both contests feature a Democratic incumbent elected on a surge of high hopes who must face the voters after four years of disappointment. In both cases, the economy is a drag on the president.
In both cases, the incumbent has attempted to demonize his opposition in order to avoid running on his record. In both cases the challenger was regarded, at first, as easy to defeat.
Its seductive to believe that 2012 will turn out the way 1980 did, with voters concluding that the challenger was not the ogre the president warned of, seeing him instead as the more presidential of the two.
It may happen. But the Romney campaign and those who wish it well have to grapple with the fact that the country has changed in the past 32 years in ways that dont advantage Republicans.

I just listened to some hack. It was all Russian coming through my speakers. It sounded like attitude adjustments.
oh they pay taxes. Just need to show them where.
Gas, food, beer, licka(as Moochelle pronounces it), when dey Babies’(notice clever position of the apostrophe signifying more than one baby) mama needs her “her”(spelled hair) and nails did, she is paying taxes.
I mean not with their money but the money they get for “benefits” on that magic card that they buy stuff with. that stuff gets taxed. Sometimes at the local level but they are paying taxes even when they are spending other peoples’ money.
We just have to show them that they are getting taxed on “their” money(which is actually redirected income from us to them)
Probably got lost in the “translation”. Proportionaly it is probably a pretty high tax on the lower income folks if/when they buy booze, cigarettes, get their nails done, etc.
The trick will be to have them concerned about the taxes when they are spending other people’s money (in the form of their welfare checks).
HOWEVER, I would think that the majority of folks that don’t pay income taxes are still above the level for collecting welfare. And could be educated on the taxes for these items. However, as history has shown, it is probably impossible to educate them on the increase in consumer prices due to regulations and taxes imposed on those rich greedy companies.
From May, 2011: “That’s 14.7% of all Americans on food stamps. The average monthly amount? $133.80.”
National Review “jumped the shark”. Oh, all 50% prefer to live on food stamps in near poverty. The tax rates will not decide this election.
Flame me, but the last year or so of Carter was more conservative than anything post 1982.
Obama is planning for race riots which only he can calm.
I’ve notice Hollywood public service announcements about child hunger. There is no child hunger in America; but, Obama is going to bring it to us. That’s another of his plans.
Too bad the GOP has no intention of nominating another Reagan. Instead we are getting Obama without the tan.
Never underestimate the GOP’s ability to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.
You got that right. Obama is about as popular as a cold sore and we still have a pretty good chance of his re-election.
Makes one wonder where the GOP true loyalities lie: With the country or with the system?
If you have to ask the question...
Great article. It gives a pragmatic assessment of the situation today compared to 1980, but at the same times gives reasons why we can be optimistic that Obama can be sent back to Chicago. I hope the Romney people read, and digest, this article. Thanks for the post Steelfish.
Only those with "skin in the game" should be permitted to vote.
Moochers will always vote AGAINST the candidate they believe will be the least genorous in passing out taxpayer money to them.
They will always vote FOR the candidate they believe will take the most from others and give it to them.
With more and more people living off government handouts their entire lives we are close to the point where no one but a socialist will ever be elected president again.
Ref. your Post #3: The Romney camp needs to get that info.
Too bad the GOP has no intention of nominating another Reagan.

Where are you going to find “another Reagan” these days? Where were all the “good Conservative candidates” this go ‘round? They didn’t have the balls to run and we ended up with the bunch of stooges we saw in the GOP Primary debacle.
Sarah Palin would be a great President but she’ll probably never put her family through the demonic attacks of the Liberals, the media and the Hollywood crowd again. God Bless Sarah Palin.
The 50% who pay no Federal Income Tax cannot be educated because they don’t want to be. Convincing them that the sales and punishment taxes on gas, smokes, forties, etc. will only incite them to demand more money. An example, they are not exempted from what ‘they’ call payroll taxes which is really OASDI and Medicare Taxes. They are even now complaining about how unfair they are....
You can’t teach someone who doesn’t want to learn.
Won't fly - any income is not taxed, so they are already ahead of those who do pay taxes. Then, many get income tax "refunds" even though they pay no taxes.
I believe that a sizeable portion of those 50% that are truly the multigenerational teat-suckers (excluding the ones that have more recenty fallen on hard times) will also be too lazy to show up at the polls.
Now that we have voter ID (here in Pa. and many other states), the next thing to do is stop the ‘paid to vote’ machine. In Philadelphia, there is a lot of ‘walking around’ money that shows up at election time.
And the 50% that do pay taxes are about get theirs trippled. But, what the hell, that is what the voters in their infinate wisdom said , On November 4, 2008,via their vote[s],said they wanted.
We had two candidates who are more closer to Reagan than Romney....actually 3. We had Santorum, Newt, and Bachmann....heck 4, I forgot Perry too. We just did not support 100 percent any of them.
(1) They want you to get it in your mind that tax rates should be raised and deductions eliminated,
(2) They think you'll imagine it's welfare mothers taking all your taxes ~ and not their banking buddies in foreign banks,
(3) They have in mind taxing new born babies if they can get you to agree to their various Progressive schemes.
We didn't end up with $16 trillion in debt because babies weren't paying taxes, or that you got a deduction for your state income taxes, or that welfare mothers sucked it all up.
Now that we know the personal income tax does not work it's time to abolish it and find something else that can work. The place to start is with the 16th amendment ~ replace it.
There were seven candidates who were not lifetime republicans and who were quite arguably not conservative.
The RINOs and outsiders split the vote to let in Romney.

The great pretenders!
Ah, a fellow urban linquist. Holla.
That 50% is also innumerate and increasingly illiterate. They could never add it all up and figure it out, they don’t read and act only on what the television tells them.
Obama has twice the money to buy TV adds that Romney has. Small matter, a Romney presidency’s purpose would only be to solidify the gains made by Obama. The Ivy League Lawyer Incumbency Party has 2 departments, one labeled Democrat and one labeled Republican.
That is also why H&R Block and all the other tax services make a buttload every year fleecing these idiots to prepare a simple 1040 that nets them their EITC checks - free money.
We taxpayers get fleeced, and in-turn, they get fleeced by H&R et al on the RALs (refund anticipation loans)... they are too effing stupid to read how to fill out a simple 1040EZ and too stupid to realize the interest they are paying for their RALs.
Oh yes, it’s astounding some days. Too stupid to fill out an EZ or a short form, unable to make change for a dollar, etc. There must be an awful lot of free things taken from productive people to pass around.
It’s a good exercise to total your taxes, Fed, Social Security (don’t forget the employer’s half), local, real estate, sales tax, gas tax, fees on every utility bill, fees on cell phones, fees on medical, etc. If you die with any left afterwards, they want that too. How much of your productivity is confiscated by the state in the end?
Mussolini cracks me up when he leads with his chin like that. “Looking down your nose” ain’t just an old saying. And that’s probably about as statesmanly as Uncle Walter (beside him) ever gets.
They take a lot. Much, much more than they deserve - just so they can stay in power. The Feral Government is stealing your life, and the lives of you descendants. They are the enemy.
It’s not “it’s the economy, stupid”, anymore. The economy isn’t hurting obama because is covering his ass about it. When Carter was the preezy, the media pounded away on the bad economy. Those days are long gone. Now the media is outright lying, and people are totally unaware just how bad it is.
We had Santorum, Newt, and Bachmann....heck 4, I forgot Perry too..

Oh God; please do not compare these 3 Stooges (Santorum, Bachmann and Perry) to Ronald Reagan. Only Newt came close to being as Conservative and “smart” as Reagan. Perry is dumb as a coal bucket (his Primary performances proved that.), Santorum is so out of touch with the real world and Michele is a shallow opportunist. Ronnie must be spinning in his grave right now.
You are correct. This is quite scary. People vote their interests. Advantage Obama!
Reagan had charisma and did not have Newt’s baggage and unlike Newt had no gender gap. Reagan got us the “Reagan Democrats” (white, blue-collar working stiffs). Only Santorum was able to attract this demographic.
#3 - Absolutely, and the pain is still very real for them.
