Washington (CNN) -- Roughly half the U.S. Marines on Okinawa will be transferred under an agreement announced Thursday that will reduce the military footprint in Japan, easing local resentments over the amount of land being used by American forces.

Some 9,000 Marines along with their family members will be transferred under the agreement, with about 5,000 being sent to Guam as part of a military buildup on the U.S. territory in the Pacific, according to a joint statement released by the U.S.-Japan Security Consultative Committee.

“..easing local resentments over the amount of land being used by American forces...”

So, how much in “aid” are we going to have to send now in lieu of our military supporting local economies?

Hey Japan - TFB!
If you hadn't started WWII, we wouldn't be there at all.

Man, Guam has got to be a tough billet. Not much, uh, local entertainment....

I don’t know what 9000 marines spend but it has to be a lot. Not to mention all the other stuff that the Marine Corps buys locally. Talk about a blow to the local economy.

Personally I don’t care what the locals think. A lot of our families lost people there. We only took the land after they started a war with us.

If you were born on Okinawa on December 8, 1941 you are now 71, retired from your job, never had any responsibility for WWII, and can travel to the United States and piss on Screamer Sam’s grave.

The US paid for Okinawa with blood. It should remain ours forever.

If we had a pro-American CIC I could accept these measures without question.

The locals have wanted us out for quite some time, so why now? How will that affect our ability to respond to local tensions in the region? What if/when NK follows through with their threats to Japan and SK?

Has this been carefully thought through or is this some ‘budget cut’ to pay for the Chicago union pensions?

John Bolton is about the only one I can trust to give it to us straight.

Look up the ranges of Chinese conventional ballistic missiles and how many there are in range of Okinawa compared to Guam.

This has been carefully thought through.

I agree, your comment was meaningless drivel. Except possibly for a few really old geezers no one alive on Okinawa today was alive and an adult during World War II. So they have no responsibility for it.

I hope the locals go broke. Screw em. Just wait, in a few years we will get articles how the Marines leaving was a deliberate plan to make them suffer economically.

‘Futenma is not addressed under the agreement announced Thursday to move the Marines.’
