What is so wrong with playing both sides of an issue?

Assuming there are two legitimate sides to an issue and seeking to compromise between them thereby providing legitimacy to the illegitimate. It is called moral relativity -something progressives do well; the premise underlying encroachment upon our inalienable rights.
