A proposal from the Obama administration to prevent children from doing farm chores has drawn plenty of criticism from rural-district members of Congress. But now it’s attracting barbs from farm kids themselves.
The Department of Labor is poised to put the finishing touches on a rule that would apply child-labor laws to children working on family farms, prohibiting them from performing a list of jobs on their own families’ land.
Under the rules, children under 18 could no longer work “in the storing, marketing and transporting of farm product raw materials.”

This is the craziest thing I have ever heard. I live in south~central Kentucky, where family farms abound. From the time kids are old enough to walk they’re helping out on the farms.
Our traditional, American way of life is almost GONE.

I grew up on a small family farm and worked for a neighbor farmer who was no relation to me. It was hard work and I survied nicely, I learned how to and know how to work.
My grandchildren ALL grew up working on their other grandfathers corperate farm. (Under this new law they would not be allowed to work on that farm). Each one of them graduated from high school at the top of their class and went on to college doing the same. They KNOW and learned the work ethic on that farm. Each of them has achieved success in their chosen fields (One is a LT. in the U.S. Navy and two are music teachers).
This new law only veils the attempt to create jobs for illegals. It will definitely hurt the all farmers.

If you had a roadside market a kid couldn’t take the money because, I guess, that would be dangerous or unhealthy for a kid of any age. Could they even shovel sh&& from their own horse’s stall?
Problem is.. the public school system is programming the kids to rat out their parents. They don’t even enforcement personal to find the violators.
The kids who don’t want to do the work will simply turn their parents in.

There are many people here on FR who do not care about such things. For them, the only thing that matters is that their candidate speaks about homosexuality and condoms while running for President. Never mind that their candidate helps the cause of Communism.
I can not agree with you more!!!! When a Presidential candidate starts to pontificate about condoms, homosexuality, and other social issues best left to the individual and or the state, I just start shaking my head and figure we have another looser in the race.
I have always thought that if we get this country’s economy running right, don’t waste money on everything the government wants to spend money on, then everything else will fall in place. Keep the economy strong, the government small, and mind you own business.

...had this been tried even in the 1970s they would have been in full retreat by now.
Of course, once there are no family farms, and agriculture is thoroughly collectivized, they’ll revoke the rule.
The government is out of control. It's gotten too big. It's dictating our every move.
Maybe an economic collapse is the only way to kill the beast. Never again should Americans ever think about electing others to "lead" them. It never ends well.

Another government takeover. The tyrants are quickly eating away at every freedom they can find, and they're moving at a record pace.
One of their targets, especially, is Americas children. They want them as far away from their parents as they can get them. Here, they'll teach the children how government farms - like in Cuba - are more reasonable than privately owned farms, and how ridiculous their parents are for thinking otherwise.
