A proposal from the Obama administration to prevent children from doing farm chores has drawn plenty of criticism from rural-district members of Congress. But now its attracting barbs from farm kids themselves.
The Department of Labor is poised to put the finishing touches on a rule that would apply child-labor laws to children working on family farms, prohibiting them from performing a list of jobs on their own families land.
Under the rules, children under 18 could no longer work in the storing, marketing and transporting of farm product raw materials.

Nothing like putting family farms out of business, by raising their costs beyond reason.
I’d say ignore it. Unless the government plans to spend billions of dollars placing a full time inspector on every family farm in America it’s unenforceable anyway.
“The Department of Labor is poised to put the finishing touches on a rule”
Can these dipshi#s just make up any rule they want?
Any truth to the rumor that this bill has been named, “Work For Wetbacks”?
...but if they would like to engage in premarital sex or have an abortion, the DNC will continue to do everything in its' power to protect their rights to rebel against their parents.
A full time inspector would mean more government jobs, more Obama support and they are paid for with your tax money. It seems likely to me.
I worked on a chicken farm, 85,000 chickens, you shoveled food in at one end of the barn and shoveled the poop out at the other.
It was a shovel ready job long before Obama came on the scene.
ignore the law........
ignore the lawyers. There is no way to enforce such an abomination and it should be declared OS (like BS only without proper credentials).
This means that any kid cannot serve themselves a breakfast containing cereal, milk and eggs (transporting) or offering it to other family members (marketing) or put the cereal box, milk or eggs away (storing).
It’s more a “war on independent living”.
Enough of this bulls*t.
This is just plain stoopid; not to mention a nightmare to enforce to begin with. Oh! Another beauraucracy created! Voila! It’s the Marxist way.
That chickenpoop could make some nice methane to run the natural gas heaters in the winter...
just an observation.
The cat's out of the bag...........by ending these programs fewer young people will go into agriculture thus forcing more family farms to be sold to the likes of Monsanto and ConAgra. It's plain and simple -- follow the money folks.
The number one target of the left and their ideological “father” (John 8:42-44) is the destruction of the family.
You see this in every policy coming out of the left.
Rock pickin and hay balin around here. Our school’s vice principal used to work with us on the farms during the summer.
This is purely the fault of congress.
They abdicate their responsibilities to the executive branch when they give it rule making authority through various laws. Then bitch when there’s overreach and abuse.
They need to step up, stop being lazy, earn their paychecks and be accountable by voting on these issues.
Look for the “union only” stipulation concerning the tilling of US so. /s (or not).
This is the craziest thing I have ever heard. I live in south~central Kentucky, where family farms abound. From the time kids are old enough to walk they’re helping out on the farms.
Our traditional, American way of life is almost GONE.
US so > US soil.
I grew up on a small family farm and worked for a neighbor farmer who was no relation to me. It was hard work and I survied nicely, I learned how to and know how to work.
My grandchildren ALL grew up working on their other grandfathers corperate farm. (Under this new law they would not be allowed to work on that farm). Each one of them graduated from high school at the top of their class and went on to college doing the same. They KNOW and learned the work ethic on that farm. Each of them has achieved success in their chosen fields (One is a LT. in the U.S. Navy and two are music teachers).
This new law only veils the attempt to create jobs for illegals. It will definitely hurt the all farmers.
Hold it right there. You men from the bank?”
“You Wash’s boy?”
“Yessir and Daddy told me I’m to shoot whoever’s from the bank.”
“Well, we ain’t from the bank young feller.”
“Yessir, I’m also s’posed to shoot folks serving papers.”
“We ain’t got no papers neither.”
“I nicked the census man.”
“Now there’s a good boy.
in the storing, marketing and transporting of farm product raw materials.
What does that even mean? Anything some government bureacrat says it does?
If you had a roadside market a kid couldn’t take the money because, I guess, that would be dangerous or unhealthy for a kid of any age. Could they even shovel sh&& from their own horse’s stall?
Problem is.. the public school system is programming the kids to rat out their parents. They don’t even enforcement personal to find the violators.
The kids who don’t want to do the work will simply turn their parents in.

There are many people here on FR who do not care about such things. For them, the only thing that matters is that their candidate speaks about homosexuality and condoms while running for President. Never mind that their candidate helps the cause of Communism.
I can not agree with you more!!!! When a Presidential candidate starts to pontificate about condoms, homosexuality, and other social issues best left to the individual and or the state, I just start shaking my head and figure we have another looser in the race.
I have always thought that if we get this country’s economy running right, don’t waste money on everything the government wants to spend money on, then everything else will fall in place. Keep the economy strong, the government small, and mind you own business.
***I worked on a chicken farm, 85,000 chickens, you shoveled food in at one end of the barn and shoveled the poop out at the other. ***
Been there, done that.
Yes, just like Obamacare, "congress shall make no law" has been replaces with "at the discretion of the Secretary".
Rebel America. It is the only viable option left.
Turning point was a long time back...we are now over the edge in free fall...how do I know?
Note the national uproar of millions over this ruling...
yep...crickets and a few bloggers and FR posters noting the lunacy...but no uproar...apathy...
...had this been tried even in the 1970s they would have been in full retreat by now.
Of course, once there are no family farms, and agriculture is thoroughly collectivized, they’ll revoke the rule.
The government is out of control. It's gotten too big. It's dictating our every move.
Maybe an economic collapse is the only way to kill the beast. Never again should Americans ever think about electing others to "lead" them. It never ends well.
>Say good-bye to 4-H projects.
That is, I think, the goal.
“Nothing outside the state.” — Description of Facisim
Another government takeover. The tyrants are quickly eating away at every freedom they can find, and they're moving at a record pace.
One of their targets, especially, is Americas children. They want them as far away from their parents as they can get them. Here, they'll teach the children how government farms - like in Cuba - are more reasonable than privately owned farms, and how ridiculous their parents are for thinking otherwise.
At that point they will require kids to work on farms.
Yes, but they can then use it to harass those certain citizens that they might feel need to be dealt with.
Well, that goes without saying.
No Junior Rodeo.
No Horse Shows.
No kids who will grow up with a love for the farm & the animals.
No veterinarians-—no farmers—no food-no water—no future.
This needs to die.
WHO wrote this bill & introduced it into Congress in the first place????
Well, maybe not ...
The US will become a liberal utopia - just like Cuba. Children will work in the fields after school so the Cuban people can have their "fair share" of what little food is avaiable. Everyone will be "allowed" only what's necessary to stay alive. The liberals will have achieved their life long dream of a satanic garden of Eden. There will be a blob of slop in every pot.
Count on it.
“Rebel America. It is the only viable option left.”
Getting to seem like that, is it not?
Just like 1856, all over again?
Only not neatly divided on geographical lines.
Catching the chickens and putting them in crates is fun too!
