Romney Wins in Rhode Island and Connecticut Primaries

By Michael O'Brien Updated 8:21 p.m. ET - Mitt Romney won the Connecticut and Rhode Island primaries on Tuesday, putting him on the path toward the general election, and allowing him to tend to unfinished business in the Republican primary.

Facing no meaningful opposition in Connecticut, Delaware, New York, Pennsylvania, or Rhode Island, the former Massachusetts governor was expected to win the vast majority, if not all, of the 222 delegates up for grabs in his bid to formalize the GOP nomination.

While President Barack Obama went after the college vote Tuesday, presidential candidate Mitt Romney was prepping for another primary night. NBC's Chuck Todd reports.

He started the evening, which was expected to showcase his pivot toward the general election, with wins in two of the five states. In the three weeks since the last slate of primaries in Maryland, Washington, D.C. and Wisconsin, Romney’s principle conservative rival, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, exited the race.

This primary contest was long over after Santorum (11 states and over 3 million) votes suspended his campaign more than three weeks ago. What Gingrich says, does, appears, whether he's up or down in DE, his quixotic campaign has long been in disarray between penguin bites and bounced checks in Utah. The task now is to mitigate Romney's move to the center by anyway and every way we could by demanding a strong true conservative as VP. No more Bushes, Rubios or other RINOS. Defeat Lugar and Hatch and send a strong message to the GOP-e

What Gingrich says, does, appears, whether he's up or down in DE...

And Newt's currently off to a rough start in Delaware. 51.5% - 32.8% with 6% reporting. He's beating Ron Paul though!

Wow. Milt winning RI and CT. Didn’t see that coming. /s

These are two very blue states. I wouldn’t be surprised if Obummer got more votes running unopposed than the GOP candidates added up.

He's been done for awhile now. But, yes, Gingrich's virtually impossible road to victory just got a little more virtually impossible. I suspect he'll bow out before the end of the week.

At least Santorum suspended his campaign gracefully, he wasn’t forced out.

Penn is starting to come in and Santorum is performing so badly in his home state. First 1% in and Mitts on 57% and Santorum on 17% and Paul on 15%. He better hope that % moves up a bit. I dont want him to lose that bad in his home state.

Santorum isn’t in the race anymore. I’m surprised he’s getting ANY votes in Pa.

And I could care less even if he does. The man is dead to me .... a sell-out extraordinaire.

I’ll say this for Ron Paul, though:
He’s been the most consistent candidate this election year....
He STILL hasn’t won a single primary!

Over in the Penn Sen. Primary. Smith is ahead with 42%. Rohrer on 20%.

Casey is only pulling 78% of the dem vote as the incumbent Dem.

Won't happen. I'm either writing in Sarah Palin's name or voting for Virgil Goode of the Constitution Party. Screw Romney and the GOP-E he rode in on.
