President Barack Obama, courting young voters crucial to his reelection, told a rowdy college-age crowd at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on Tuesday that he knows first-hand about the burden of student loans because he only managed to pay his back a scant eight years ago.
"Michelle and I, we've been in your shoes," Obama, who turns 51 in August, told a cheering, capacity crowd of 8,000 at Carmichael Arena.
"Check this out, all right. I'm the president of the United States. We only finished paying off our student loans off about eight years ago. That wasn't that long ago. And that wasn't easy--especially because when we had Malia and Sasha, we're supposed to be saving up for their college educations, and we're still paying off our college educations," he said.
The president's emphasis on his modest upbringing seemed designed to invite comparisons to presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney. The White House has denied specifically targeting the multi-millionaire financier with such attacks even as the Obama campaign has pointedly attacked Romney's personal finances.
Obama's stop in North Carolina was the first on a two-day, campaign-style swing through battleground states to reengage young voters who powered his historic 2008 campaign but seem less enthused about the 2012 election. His chief policy message was an appeal for Congress to pass legislation to stop interest rates on a popular student loan from doubling July 1 from 3.4 percent to 6.8 percent. "I didn't just read about this. I didn't just get some talking points about this. I didn't just get a policy briefing on this," the president said to laughter from the crowd.

So he was in default on those loans for 20 years before he paided it off? Only in america.
The fact that 8000 morons have nothing better to do than to go listen to his lies in the middle of the day speaks volumes about how far we have fallen as a nation.

What loans? What college? Really now... where are the transcripts? Who in the EFF even knew the POS?
I’d tell him to prove it. Open up his college records and show who payed for his college. I imagine he’s talking about his wife who could have payed hers off many years ago but didn’t.
So he admits to having crappy personal financial management. I’d love for him to release those records so we can see in writing his status as an American or a foreigner
Geez, cry me a river! Had you used your so-called brilliance, you could have been a highly paid attorney and dispensed with any debt you had long before that.
But you wanted political power, so you got into the state senate and voted for nothing while you were there.
A black child, from a single parent family went to some of the most prestigious colleges in America .... how did he pay for that? How could he get in, when a vast majority of American kids, with both parents working as professionals - couldn’t even begin to pay tuition?
Last week he said someone gave him his education.
He should have gotten a refund on any economics courses.
This from a guy still paying mortgage interest, despite not being able to deduct it.
Like his situation is supposed to be average.
HE’s now giving financial advice?
This is shedding some light on his disregard for the nation’s financial condition.
There is no sugardaddy for our nation, but he promises these students he will be theirs.
Please make it stop! Stick a sock in his mouth! Distract him with shiny objects. Just make it stop!
Since he brought it up, I would like to see more info on his student loans, and anything else from college records. Unfortunately, they are not available and probably never will be.
In my opinion, the debt he owes the men and/or organizations who put him through college are not ever going to be paid off, because they are also --at least, in part -- responsible for putting him in power.
And for that, he can be reminded of his debt until the day he dies, and pay above and beyond all that he owes. And --in the opinion of both borrower and lender-- to HE** with the consequences to everyone else.
Then again, maybe he just had foreign student aid. Either way, he is conducting business as usual: lie just to stay in practice, lie even if it's in your best interest to say nothing or to tell the truth, lie because its your very nature, lie because its fun... etc.
As a foreign student, he was likely able to get many scholarships and Low Interest Student Loans from the US government.
I seriously doubt he even had student loans. If paid back anything it was in the form of favors - and the Ayers/weathermen/communists were on the receiving end.
Consuming dog meat can help with the budgeting.
