The Associated Press

NEW YORK —Presidential candidate Newt Gingrich told Republicans at a New York state party dinner that he would work for Mitt Romney’s victory in the general election if Romney wins the nomination.

“We are dedicated to a unified Republican Party,” he said.

Speaking Thursday in New York City, Gingrich said he’s stayed in the race “to articulate big themes and big ideas” but that “we have a moral obligation to defeat Barack Obama.”

To that end, he said, he would work to support Romney, and he said Romney would do the same for him. “Romney and I have discussed this,” he said.

In his remarks to the state party, Gingrich called for “bold” positions and reiterated his call for energy independence by opening up off-shore areas and federal lands to drilling.

Gingrich is a glorified reformed RINO just like Romney. The conservatives-Perry,Bachmann,Santorum were endlessly bashed and cast aside on this forum; all in the name of Palin who never ran. A glorified reformed RINO Gingrich was then put on a pedestal. Another glorified reformed RINO Romney pulls into the lead and he is no longer a reformed RINO;according to a gang of bully suck ups and FR, he is a liberal.Romney is no more liberal than Gingrich. Not voting or writing in another reformed RINO Gingrich's name is nothing but chalking one up for Axelrod as it most likely leads to a sure Obama win.

To those beating their chests with big resistance and rebel causes on not voting for Romney.I kindly ask as you are on your high horse of speeches for America and doing the moral thing. Where were your high standards and moralities when you stood by and allowed conservative candidates Perry,Bachmann,Santorum to be brow beaten to no end on this forum by harsh tongued (unless they are begging in the Freeperthon thread) tattle tale childish bullies?Such passionate speeches on abortion and how evil it is all awhile this forum verbally annihilated the only real pro-life candidates there were.So please save the righteous abortion speeches it does not add up to past actions.

The problem with this story and headline, portrayed as front page news, is that it misleads.

Because it shouldn’t be front page news...and I’m not talking about posting guidelines.

Newt has been saying this for weeks.

And giving his reasoning, which is the nation will be destroyed under a second Obama term.

It isn’t new, it isn’t news.

How many people seem to know that, though?

So they think it is new and that it means he’s really for Romney, after all.

No, he never was and he isn’t now.

It’s his reasoning America is going down, otherwise.

So this is his answer. Hold your nose and vote AGAINST Obama.

Others have different views.

Fine.

I knew when I saw this it would be reacted to in ignorance.

I hate ignorance.

Read my tagline.

Conservative voters are without a “small government conservative” candidate for POTUS, YET AGAIN! Profoundly, frustrating!

Gingrich tells NY GOP he would support Romney.

Good for him. I won't.

No surprise here.
I was fed up with the GOP in New York State because the candidates switched parties so often I never knew who was actually a Republican.
I changed my party affiliation 2 years ago to Conservative only to discover that every candidate supported by the Conservative Party was a Democrat.
I hate living is this soviet state.

This isn’t new.

He said for weeks now America will be destroyed in another Obama term.

I don’t argue for his decision to support the nominee even if it’s the detestable Romney.

Just sayin, that’s his belief and what he thinks is his duty.

No.

He’s running against Romney.

He hasn’t changed what he’s campaigning on.

He keeps getting asked, has been asked for weeks now, if he will support the nominee.

Has said all along, yes, because another Obama term means the destruction of America.

Not new, not news.

I feel horrible about what has happened.

It isn’t Newt’s fault and he is still running.

His eye on Obama and sense of history causes him to decide to support the nominee against what he thinks is America’s end.

I don’t push that view on others. I am stating his view for those who think this is new, shocking, a betrayal.

No.

You're correct it is not new.

No, not fine. the others on this forum are taking a high moral ground stating Romney's stance on abortion;while they annihilated pro-life candidates Perry,Santorum,Bachmann. This is just wrong.

It’s his reasoning America is going down, otherwise. So this is his answer. Hold your nose and vote AGAINST Obama.

Sadly this is the truth.Also...Palin said on Savage weeks ago she would rally around Romney for I assume this same reasoning.

He - along with all the other GOP candidates - has always said that he would support whoever was the nominee in cluding Romney, who is the only competition to Gingrich now. He also said he didn’t think it was a done deal, even though he knew he was the underdog, but he was going to keep on trying (essentially, to prevent Romney from being the nominee).

Why do these routine and selectively edited remarks get posted time and again as if they were something new and horrifying?

Yeah, I know. I expect Sarah Palin will also support Romney if he is the nominee. They are Republicans and that’s what Republicans do. I’m not so I won’t. :)

This is no brainer. Of course Newt will support the republican nominee.

Not supporting the republican nominee in a two party race gives support to the other candidate. This will be a horribly negative campaign, I can see the ads now....look at all of the conservatives actively working against Romney.........they think that Obama must be okay, they don’t want him defeated.

Sorry, it’s just how it is. The primary is not over, if you will only vote for a certain candidate or candidates, then I would work my tail off FOR that person instead of being totally negative.

I’m saying it is fine that you, or others, have views that differ from his.

I’m not calling his view, fine.

I’m stating what his view is.

It’s a defensible view, in my opinion.

Agree with it or not.

Newt believes the nation is literally gone after O is re-elected, and it’s HIS responsibility to stop that from happening if he can.

Others have expressed different views from his.

Fine.

Express away.

What I despise is that people will fall for the headline and truly believe he is for Romney and is no longer running against Romney.

Untrue.

He really can’t stand Romney and is the anti Romney in his issue utterances.

He’s told you why he will support him if he’s the nominee.

That isn’t a knock on you.

Everyone has to do what they think is right.

While McCain said “I got my marching orders” from the supporters, he still seemed to resist their red-meat rhetoric.

One man said he was scared of an Obama presidency.

“My wife and I are expecting our first child, in April 2nd, next year,” the man said. “And frankly, we’re scared. We’re scared of an Obama presidency.”

McCain told the man he should not fear Obama.

“I want to be president of the United States, and I don’t want Obama to be,” he said. “But I have to tell you, I have to tell you, he is a decent person, and a person that you do not have to be scared as President of the United States.”

McCain’s response was met with more boos from the crowd.- October 11, 2008

I apologize we are misunderstanding each other.I agree with Newt Gingrich. What I was trying to express as not being fine, is the war on this forum. It is an unneeded war of words.I was pointing out the hypocrisy of some that are giving high moral ground speeches for not backing Romney because of his abortion stances all awhile the three conservative candidates that were not wishy washy on prolife were bashed on this forum.

I know very well Newt Gingrich is getting behind Romney because if he doesn’t we won’t be able to moan and cry about anyone or anything on the net or IRL if Obama is allowed to continue his war on America.WAKE UP Obama took over the God Blessed oceans last week (did I just say that?) Yes I did. How profoundly unreal!Obama must be stopped.

Newt can do what he wants, but I refuse to choose party over principle.

Voting for Romney is going into tacit agreement with moving the Republican party to the left. We conservatives are in for a long hard trek in the wilderness, should that man become president.

I’m with you on everything you said here, txrangerette. :-) And I’m *counting* on surprises.
I don’t know how in the world I can bring myself to vote for Mittens (I’m counting on not having to make that decision, too)
Obama must not have a second term. If it looks like Mitt will indeed be the GOP nominee, we had better come up with consensus on a third party candidate & work our tails off getting the general public on board.

I don’t think there’s any way that Newt (or Sarah) will run third party. I wish, but they’ve made their loyalty clear, no matter how undeserved it is.
My dream ticket is Newt/ West with Sarah as energy secretary & maybe Santorum as AG.
Mitt & Ann need a game show or a sitcom. (seriously)

Like Dick Cheney, Newt Gingrich is nothing but a dirty rotten GOP-e RINO!

That’s why true conservatives must pull out all of the stops and campaign like crazy for Newt Gingrich!
