The 411 about the Trayvon Martin timeline
Chicago Tribune ^ | 20 apr 2012 | Eric Zorn

Posted on 04/20/2012 4:36:38 AM PDT by rellimpank

A key moment in George Zimmerman's cellphone call to the Police Department in Sanford, Fla., on the fateful night of Feb. 26 occurs at 7:11:41 p.m., a little more than two minutes into a call that lasts about four minutes.

"He's running," says Zimmerman, referring to the "real suspicious guy" he'd called in to report. Almost immediately you hear on the recording a car door opening and what sounds like a warning beep indicating the key is still in the ignition. Shortly thereafter comes the unmistakable sound of wind blowing into a phone mouthpiece.

Zimmerman is in pursuit! And we all know the outcome: Zimmerman, 28, ultimately shot and killed the unarmed Martin, 17, touching off a national controversy about race, justice and firearms.

But what's often overlooked in all the heated conversations about this tragedy is the actual timeline based on police documents, a timeline that culminated at 7:16:56 p.m., more than five minutes later, with the sound of a single gunshot in the background of a 911 emergency call.

A large part of the media is dreaming about all the reports they could write about race riots, if they can just get some started.

Exactly, they want to write about the “Days of Rage” and use that to manipulate the Election coverage. When they did that in 1968 they ended up with Richard Nixon as the new president. What will happen this time? My feeling is that the result they get will not be the result they desire.

Also there may well be additional fall-out in that the MSM will be so discredited that their media and financial empires may crash and burn as the rise of the citizen-journalist becomes the norm. Think about that please... The MSM reporter at the scene is reporting and the Citizen-reporters behind him/in front of him/off to the side of him are reporting something entirely different and have high quality video/sound to back up their reports that are being made available in raw form almost instantaneously.

“BTW, I am an observant pacifist and do not even harm insects, I pick them up by the wings and escort them outside.”

What does an observant pacifist do when he hears screams for help, he rushes into a room and finds an intruder in the process of raping and choking his sister? Just wondering.

After reading the Chicago Tribune blog, assuming the timeline stuff he presents is accurate, here’s what I infer happened - Z chases Trayvon about halfway to the house Trayvon was staying in, Trayvon hides behind some bushes, Z stops when told to by dispatcher, stands or ambles around for three minutes keeping a lookout for Trayvon, who is keeping an eye on Z from hideout, Trayvon gets tired of having to hide from Z, confronts Z, fight ensues, Trayvon gets the upper hand in the fistfight, that’s about it. It’s not so hard to figure out.

What kills me is Zimmerman is being held in jail and the evidence I’ve seen so far prove him innocent. Why hasn’t he been released on bail under his own recognizance? I’d get another lawyer for sure!

I remember hearing (I don't know if it was from a real source or rumor) that GZ's gun jammed when chambering the next round. Which points to a struggle over the gun.

Not necessarily.

If the rear of the gun's slide bumped into Zimmerman's body, that would have also interfered with the gun's cycling. If Zimmerman's on the ground trying to fire at an attacker on top of him, it's quite possible that some part of him got in the way of the slide's cycling.

Either way, the lack of cycling is indicative of Zimmerman being in a struggle, and would point towards self-defense by Zimmerman.

I believe he’s going for a bail hearing today.

The lawyer may have felt he was safer in jail at this point.

I remember reading some weeks ago, that Zimmerman and his attorney both agreed that until they had ample time to prepare a safe place for Zimmerman to stay, that it would be best to remain in custody. Hopefully, that place exists and he gets out on bail today. And I agree that he should be out on bail, without having to come up with any money. He is innocent and Trayvon was simply killed in a simple self defense shooting. All the low I.Q. race mongers are directly responsible for what's happening to Zimmerman.

True. I was more or less trying to answer the question of why GZ didn’t shoot twice.

As in 1968, I think the more likely scenario will be for many white voters to decide that Dem candidates will not protect them against black violence, and that even white liberals will vote Republican in self-defense.

I’m pretty sure the “gun jammed” story got started when it became known only one shot was fired, one empty brass was found, and Z’s gun was turned over to police officer with an empty chamber and full magazine. If that is all true, that does not indicate that the gun “jammed”.

If the chamber is empty and the clip is full doesn’t it mean that gun didn’t cycle. Hence, jam.

If there was an empty chamber, an ejected shell, and a non-empty magazine, that indicates that either Zimmerman took out the chambered round before handing over the pistol (good firearms practice), or that the gun’s slide went back far enough to extract and eject the spent shell, but not far enough to catch and chamber the next round from the magazine.

No, what it means is Z was carrying with full magazine and bullet in the chamber, gun on safety, manages to get gun out and off safety in struggle, pulls trigger once, gun fires and cycles another bullet into the chamber.

Trayvon slumps, so there you sit, right by the guy you just shot, and you are holding a gun with a live round in the chamber with cops on the way. What do you do?

Drop the magazine out of the gun, jack the live round out of the chamber, and put the round into the magazine, replace magazine into the gun, and you can then hand your gun over without having to hand over a gun with a live round in tne chamber to the officer.

Then Z would have handed his gun over to the police officer with the slide jammed open, which surely would have been noted. Either way, there’s no big mystery, or much that would affect our picture of what happened here that I can think of right off. Maybe a Lawyer could!

That’s a lot of assumption there.

The plan to "hand over a gun" I think is a very bad plan. The officer has no way of knowing whether there is a chambered round or not. It won't matter because the officer will assume that the gun is ready to fire.

If you are ever in such a situation, I recommend that you drop the gun to the ground, in whatever state it is in after the incident, and, if necessary, stand on it while holding both hands up with fingers spread wide to show that you are not holding a weapon. As the police approach to take charge of the scene, you can walk several steps away from the gun so that it is nowhere near you if you are ordered to the ground.

If you leave the gun on you and an officer orders you to "drop the gun", I wouldn't be surprised if you ended up shot dead if you touch the gun.

I'd bet that the recent police shooting of a man coming out of a Las Vegas Costco probably went down that way; with one officer ordering the man to the ground and another ordering him to drop a holstered weapon. Touching the weapon, under the orders of one officer, would then prompt the other officer or officers to open fire.

Of course, I didn’t mean literally hand over. Perhaps I should have said, “point to that gun on the ground over there and inform the officer of the gun’s readiness or condition to discharge if were to be handled”.
